Saga '02-'04 / Coll. 1 Boba Fett, Anakin, Mace & R2 review...
« on: February 27, 2003, 08:40 PM »
For those of you who don't venture into the Toy Reviews section too often, our fortunate (and impatient  ;D) friend Jared (SilverZed3) has already picked up the new Collection 1 case from Entertainment Earth, which has the new Boba Fett, mechanical arm Anakin, Total Control Mace, and Flying R2-D2 figures in it.  He's posted his complete review of these new figs right here:

SilverZed3's New Coll. 1 Figure Review

Swing by and check it out, so you'll know full well what to prepare yourself for when this wave finally hits retail.

Saga '02-'04 / Holy cow! We're getting TWO new Jedi Lukes!!!
« on: February 27, 2003, 01:52 PM »
The kids version with action feature:

The collectors/adults highly articulated & detailed version:

Check out the main page for the full story!  Two new versions of Jedi Luke are on the way - one with an action feature aimed at the younger kids, followed later by an uber-articulated and detailed version aimed at the adult collectors!  All I've got to say is Hasbro has FINALLY heard our voices and essentially admitted that they realize that we don't like the action features and want something different.  Now we're finally getting what we want!  I've always said that I wouldn't mind the dreaded action features, if Hasbro would just release an alternate version without them, nicely articulated and detailed.  I'm a happy man today.  Hopefully this trend becomes a mainstay!

So what do you guys think of the new pictures, as well as Hasbro's new strategy of releasing two different figures of the same character - aimed at two different markets: kids and adults/collectors?

Feedback / Darth Kenobi's feedback
« on: February 25, 2003, 01:31 AM »
Just completed my second successful trade with Darth Kenobi.  Well, to be honest, my wife did the actual trade with him, as he's been nice enough to meet up with her at the school she teaches at near his house.  Always a pleasure for both of us Tom!  Thanks again for trading and I (we) look forward to the next time...

I highly recommend Darth Kenobi to everybody!

So how many of you have gone to either, or both, of the Star Wars Celebration 1 & 2 conventions in Denver and Indianapolis respectively?  What were your thoughts on them?  Did you have a great time, or did the bad weather or long lines ruin it for you?

Who's going to Celebration 3 in a couple years?

I missed out on the Denver celebration, which was probably a good thing since I'm not such a big fan of really bad weather.  But I went to Celebration 2 in Indianapolis with my wife for all 3 days.  Despite some long lines and the poorly distributed Sacul figure, I had the time of my life!  It was a blast and there were just so many fun and incredible things to see and do - too many actually.  I'll have to drop some of my highlights in here a little later - just too many to list right now!

My only regret was that I had just hit the online SW forum community a couple months prior to our trip to Indy, so I didn't really know anyone well enough to seek them out and try to meet up with them there.  Now, nearly a year later, I feel that I've developed a lot of great friendships online, and gotten to know a lot of fellow forum members around the web, and I really wish I could've gotten together with them in person when we were all in the same place.  Oh well.  Another couple years I guess...

So, what are your SW Celebration experiences?  Who will I get to meet at C3?

Feedback / Jared's (pka SilverZed3/Tydirium) feedback
« on: February 21, 2003, 06:58 PM »
Just had my fourth trading get together with SilverZed3 (edit: now known as Tydirium), and as always, Jared hooked me up with lots of cool stuff!  If you ever get the chance to trade with him, I'd highly suggest you do so, since you'll be in excellent hands.  Thanks again Jared.  Looking forward to the next time...

Well, after about a 10-12 year Vintage hiatus, I've finally jumped back into the Vintage arena.  My loose Vintage figure collection has been 2 figures short of being complete for more than a decade (Yak Face & Stormtrooper Luke), but for some reason or another, I never went back and pursued them to finish my collection off.

But with my plans of attempting to put together a complete Vintage carded collection soon, I figured I should polish off the loose ones first.  Therefore, I hit the eBay circuit and came up with this beauty:

Vintage Star Wars Luke Stormtrooper complete!

Pretty good price, C-9.5 condition with not even a hint of yellowing in the limbs, and the seller is Jeff Correll who's a very reputable member of the Vintage boards over at GH and RS and a staff member at the great 12back.com site.  It feels really good to finally get my feet wet in the Vintage arena again after all this time.  Most pleased I am!   :)

Just a loose Yak Face left to go now...

Then things are gonna get real hairy...

Clone Wars '03-'05 / New Clone Wars line previewed at Toy Fair!
« on: February 14, 2003, 04:05 PM »
Eegads, my head is spinning with sensory overload right now! Having a difficult time formulating coherent thoughts...

Hasbro just previewed some of the new Clone Wars line.  Check these bad boys out:

Sweet Clone Troopers!  I don't mind the preposes of the Clone Trooper 3-pack, as long as all 3 are in different (and excellent) poses, which these appear to be! Most beautiful. And if that Federation Droid 3-pack does indeed come with one of each of the Super Battle Droid, Destroyer Droid, and regular Battle Droid, then that will be an absolute dream come true! Looks like the two "wheels" on the Hailfire Droid have been corrected to a more angled position too! I love the new packaging as well. Kudos in a major way to Hasbro!

FOUR new Screen Scenes - of the Jedi Council and Geonosis War Room, with at least two brand new figures in each!!! Does that mean that there will likely be two different sets of each of those two scenes? Do you realize what that could potentially mean?!  Oh boy, lots of holes might get filled in with these!

What do you guys and gals think?!

Saga '02-'04 / New Darth Vader and Snowtrooper!
« on: February 14, 2003, 02:46 PM »
So Hasbro finally put up a couple pictures of the new Vader and Snowtrooper figures this morning (oddly no Jedi Luke though).

That Vader looks pretty sweet!  I'm a little concerned over the "lightsaber throwing action" and what it will do to the (permanent) positioning of his arm though.  But the detail in his face is even better than the previous RH Vader, and it looks like he'll be able to hold his nicely detailed lightsaber with both hands (I think).  Not sure why his cape's got to be quite so "wind blown" though...

The Snowtrooper looks decent.  Nothing spectacular, and pretty similar to it's previous incarnations.  Can't say that I care at all for Hasbro decision to remove the two waistband utility pouches from the front of his uniform though!  Ugh.  I guess the functioning holster is a nice touch, though I'm not sure how authentic that is.  I'm assuming it's the same tri-pod cannon as before, which was already pretty good looking.

I like 'em...  :)  You can check out Hasbro's complete report here:

A big thanks to all of my fellow traders!  My Star Wars collection wouldn't be complete without your help.  Hopefully I was able to enhance your collections a little as well...

I have a bunch more feedback at both Rebelscum and Galactic Hunter as well, if you're interested...

Looking forward to trading with you!   8)

Other Collectibles / Star Wars Stikfas figures...???
« on: February 6, 2003, 05:13 AM »
Not sure if any of you are familiar with these new Stikfas figures that have been getting pretty popular of late, but I just saw a picture of a Jango Fett Stikfas figure in this month's AFN or Toyfare magazine (don't recall which).

Anyone know if this was real, or just a custom?  I hadn't heard of Star Wars being licensed to this particular action figure line, but might be interested in picking them up if it was...  Anyone have any insight on the matter?

Hasbro has put up their preview pictures of the new 12" Han Solo, Lando Skiff Guard and AT-ST Driver.  You can see their complete story here.  I don't do the 12" line any more myself, but that Lando looks pretty nice with his Skiff Guard helmet on.  And does anyone else notice a startling resemblance between the AT-ST Driver and a certain former Tonight Show host?!  (check out this close up)  :D

Hasbro says these figures are due out March 10th.  So, what do you guys think of 'em?

Other Collectibles / Darth Maul lightsaber...
« on: February 5, 2003, 06:13 PM »
Forget the Master Replicas Darth Maul lightsaber, for just $30,000 more you could get the real thing right here on eBay!  Holy crap, that's a fat chunk of change!

Saga '02-'04 / New 2003 list...???
« on: February 3, 2003, 11:20 PM »
Pete over at TPU has just added another long list of Hasbro's possible 2003 line from a scoop he received.  Some pretty interesting tidbits in there, but as always, this is only speculation until confirmed by Hasbro, but it certainly is a fun read.  Hope it's all true!  Check it out at http://books.dreambook.com/tpu/probenews.html (scroll down a little).

So what do you guys think?  What would you greatly look forward to from that list?  Basically all of the OT stuff has me very excited!  Throne Room Set?  Get outta here!  That would be a dream come true!

Jocasta's Reading Room / Comprehensive TPB checklist anyone?
« on: February 1, 2003, 03:10 PM »
I only collect the Star Wars TPBs (Trade Paper Backs), rather than each of the individual comics.  Unfortunately I've fallen several years behind in my collection now.

So I was curious if anyone out there has, or knows of, a comprehensive checklist of all of the TPBs released to present (and beyond)?  I realize that the Dark Horse site has a huge Star Wars checklist, but I hate sifting through all of the non-TPB stuff to find what I'm looking for.

Thanks to anyone who can possibly help out!

Back in 1997, George Lucas finally delved back into the Star Wars saga after a long lay off, by bringing to us the suped up versions of the Original Trilogy movies, otherwise known as the Special Editions.  So what did you think of these revised versions of our classic movies?  Love em'?  Hate em'?  For me, it's a fair amount of both...

A New Hope:
Pros:
  • The entrance to, and development of, Mos Eisley.
  • The Falcon's dramatic exit from Mos Eisley.
  • The re-inserted Biggs footage from the Rebel Hangar.  Really helps to develop Luke's friendship with him, and Luke's subsequent pain when Biggs gets nailed by Vader.
  • The final Death Star space battle.  These changes were just awesome!  It blew me away what some better camera angles and more manueverable flight paths could do to this footage, much of which was completely revised.  My absolute favorite Special Edition change(s).
Cons:
  • Greedo shoots first.  Ah, this is a killer (no pun intended).  Completely changed our outlook on Han, and therefore his character development.  Instead of being a ruthless, rogue smuggler who kills first and asks questions later, we now simply have a guy acting in self defense.  It really diminishes the overall change and turnaround that we witness and appreciate in Han's character throughout ANH, and the remainder of the Trilogy.  Instead of evolving from a really bad dude into pretty decent guy, Han just goes from OK to pretty decent.  Not to mention the fact that it's completely assinine to think that a top of the line bounty hunter can't even come close to shooting a guy sitting stationary two feet directly in front of him.  Even an Imperial Stormtrooper can shoot better than this.  Gives Bounty Hunters a bad name.  A terrible change by George.
  • The added Jabba footage.  I don't take issue too much with the scene itself, as it does enhance and explain the overall story line.  It's just that the new CG version of Jabba was/is absolutely TERRIBLE!  Furthermore, Han's stepping on Jabba's tail and getting away with it, just greatly lessens the overall evil and dangerous aura of Jabba.  It makes Jabba look like a pathetic sissy to let Han walk all over him without repercussion.  Still not quite sure what I think about Boba's new early cameo into the Saga...
The Empire Strikes Back:
Pros:
  • The extended Wampa scene.  Always fun to see more action with nasty creature involved.
  • The Falcon's extended arrival into Cloud City.
  • The much greater development and design of Cloud City, both inside and out.
Cons:
  • Removing Luke's line to R2 when he gets spit out by the Dagobah swamp creature - "You're lucky you don't taste very good".  What's wrong with that line?  I thought it was quite applicable, and tastefully comical coming from Luke.  Replaced with some boring, meaningless line.  Why?
  • Luke screaming like a little sissy-girl as he drops down the Bespin core/shaft.  Again (like Han), a HUGE change to the character development of one of the main players.  Instead of Luke letting go of the Bespin Gantry in the face of his nemisis, and peacefully and bravely giving himself to the Force, we now have Luke screaming like a frightened 6-year old girl all the way down the shaft, almost looking like he accidentally slipped off the Bespin Gantry.  Instead of a brave Jedi becoming one with the Force, we now just have a crying little punk who got his butt kicked by his Pops.  A very bad edit by George.

  • Vader's new voice.  Though I liked the new Imperial Shuttle scene added in, I can't tolerate another actor voicing any of Vader's lines except for James Earl Jones.  Having someone else speak just that one line, was painfully obvious and very unfortunate.
Return of the Jedi:
Pros:
  • The new ending Celebration scene.  I liked seeing all of the various SW cities/planets celebrating the defeat of the evil Empire.  Tied the galaxy and saga together quite nicely.  Also, though I enjoyed the previous Ewok Celebration song, I find John Williams revised end theme here to be much more elegant and suitable for the magnitude of what has just occurred and for the final notes of our beloved saga.
Cons:
  • The new musical number Jedi Rocks.  Ugh.  This unfortunate addition just doesn't have a place in the Star Wars world.  The previous Lapti Nek song was just right for Jabba's Palace - subtle and eery, but somewhat hip and cool at the same time.  This new song and dance routine just makes me want to yack.  Watching the microphone go clear down the throats of the lead singers is just not necessary either.  The entire number just cheapens the whole dangerous aura surrounding Jabba's Palace.  Save this crap for a Disney flick.

  • Flirting Fett.  I just don't care to see the most dangerous bounty hunter in the galaxy hitting on Jabba's freaky back-up singers.  Not necessary, and it lessens the mystique of an otherwise very cool character.
  • The Little Shop of Horrors Sarlaac Pit monster.  I don't mind seeing some tentacle looking things crawling up and out of the Sarlaac's mouth area (pit), but that whole crazy CG beak/mouth looking thing flailing about just makes me think of Rick Moranis talking to his humanistic plant in The Little Shop of Horrors.  Not necessary, and again, it lessens the mystique of an otherwise very cool and scary space creature.
And as a general point for all three movies, obviously the Special Editions brought about nice improvements in the overall picture and sound quality, through the rigorous restoring of the film print and soundtrack.  Also, the great majority of the smaller, more subtle details that were added in throughout the movies were nice improvements as well, even if they weren't as noticeable to the average viewer.

It's really hard to say overall what I think of the changes made in the Special Editions, since I really loved some of them, and really hated others.  I guess it's a toss up.  But I'd fashion a guess that we may not even be seeing the Special Editions again in the future, even when the Original Trilogy finally hits DVD.  I'm willing to bet that George has even more changes in store, once he's done with Ep. 3 (as rumor has it), that will tie the whole saga together even more, in what will be labeled as the "Definitive Edition" movies (and possibly including another theatrical re-release).  And maybe, just maybe, if we're really lucky, ol' Uncle George will prove that he actually listens to his fans, and will magically make Greedo's blaster shot disappear...  But only time will tell...

So what did you all think of the Special Editions...???
