Watto's Junk Yard / Re: I need some help on my Physics... Please.
« on: January 16, 2003, 05:44 PM »
Now our class has gotten into "real" physics...
Then you can count me out for any further tutelage!  I hate science.  I somehow got through all of high school with only taking Biology - no Physics or Chemistry.  Not sure how, but I'm GLAD I did!  Good luck Brad, you're gonna need it!  But I'm sure that smarty pants engineer fella that roams these parts will still be able to help you out!   ;)

Phew!  Thank God.  Thought I was losin' my mind there for a minute.  I would hate to have ruined Brad's chances to get into a good college!  See Brad, you were right all along!  You don't need us accountants and engineers to help ya' out!   ;)

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Where's the Snow?
« on: January 16, 2003, 04:13 PM »
The wife and I, a couple friends, are heading up to her family's cabin in the local mountains (Big Bear) this weekend.  Considering it's about 80 degrees in SoCal right now, I doubt we're going to see any snow except out on the slopes!  Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be doing any skiing or boarding this trip, but we'll definitely be spending some time at the local sports bar there, watching the Raiders lay waste to the Titans in the AFC Championship!!!

So does that mean that I goofed this up Scott?  I didn't really understand what his questions had to do with Physics, but from a purely mathematical point it looked like his examples and answers checked out just fine...

If I just caused you to fail your class, let me know Brad, and I'll send a note to your teacher explaining that it was all my fault!   :'(

Check this thread out if you're interested in seeing just how many of each or your favorite Star Wars retail stores are actually out there.  Some pretty interesting numbers...

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Lord of the Rings
« on: January 16, 2003, 03:00 PM »
I caught this epic again for the second time just recently, and all I've got to say is AWESOME.  The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is what I was truly hoping the Star Wars prequels were going to be all along, but they've fallen far short of Peter Jackson's excellent LOTR work IMO.

I love that most everything just looks and feels real in both of the LOTR flicks.  Not nearly as much CG, and when there is, it's not nearly as noticeable and overwhelming.  Someone said it very well elsewhere, when they said that Peter Jackson uses CGI to advance the overall story when necessary, but George Lucas practically uses CGI as his story.  There's just too much of it in the Prequels.  I often find myself realizing that not a single thing on the screen at that moment is real, and thinking that I'm essentially just watching a really well done cartoon.

I also love the added length to the LOTR films.  I understand that some people don't care much for 3 hour length movies - usually due to drinking too many sodas and needing to bust a squirt doing the movie, but I love a good, long movie.  Certainly more entertainment value, to say the least.  There's so much more story to tell and character development that should take place in the Prequels, but Lucas absolutely refuses to go over 2 hours and 20 minutes total for any of his movies (and it's certainly not a cost issue).  At this day and age, that's plain silly.  There's been tons of very lengthy movies (over 2.5 hours) that have done huge box office over the past 5 years.  Why can't Star Wars jump into that mix as well and give us more of what we want to see.

I could go on and on about what I've enjoyed in LOTR so far, but I won't.  Basically, Tolkien's already excellent stories have just been brilliantly interpreted into film by Jackson.  They're just epic all the way through.

It should be very interesting to see what George has in store for Episode 3, 'cause there's a hell of a lot of story left to tell, loose ends to tie up, parts to tie into the O.T., etc.  Please Mr. Lucas:  Return to the OT magic, and give us a kick a$$ Episode 3, so the Saga can go out in style...

But at this point, the Prequels have virtually no chance of catching LOTR for second best trilogy of all time - behind the Original Trilogy of course!  Just my opinion, of course...

Just caught this link that Scott posted to an interesting debate over the two film franchises at USAToday's site.  Interesting...

As far as retail distribution goes, these are where all of our favorite Star Wars figure haunts stand in regards to total number of stores in the U.S.:

  • Wal-Mart = over 2,800 stores
  • K-Mart = around 1,500 stores
  • KB Toys = over 1,300 stores
  • Target = 1,148 stores
  • Toys 'R' Us = 686 stores
  • Disneyland/World = exactly 2 stores (but you already knew that, I'm sure)
Some surprising numbers in there, at least to me.  Like I mentioned elsewhere, these stores really vary by region - tons of Target stores out here in Southern California, but very few Wal-Marts.  Vice versa I'm sure for back East and down South.  So we should all try to help eachother out around here to "spread the wealth!"   :)

JediMAC: I'm just a lowly Sophmore in High School as of now. :)
Nothing lowly about it BobaShek!  Some of us old farts 'round here would give our left n*t to go back in time and spend a few days in the tenth grade again.  Those were some good times back then!  Enjoy it while you can - 'cause the "real world" and all of its mind boggling responsibilities awaits you a few years down the road...

Of course, you could always stretch out your college career for a good 8 or 9 years like I did, and it should make things much funner and easier for you.  Until you meet your wife that is, and she starts asking about your career, finances, etc.  Hmmm, bad advice I'm giving you.  Maybe you should just GET BACK TO YOUR STUDIES, so you can better support that future family of yours!!!   Well, what are you waiting for...???  Chop, chop!   ;)

Watto's Junk Yard / Re:Your DVD Collection
« on: January 16, 2003, 01:32 PM »
I am almost positive though I have heard that the Original non-Special Edition Trilogy will never be released on DVD...which is what the $30 Bootlegs are ;)
Yep, exactly.  I was referring to the original (non Special-Edition) versions of the Original Trilogy movies.  Lucas has said over and over that those will never see the light of day again - only the Special Editions from thence on.  Even the Special Editions might be in doubt at this point, since it sounds like Georgie might be thinking about tinkering with them some more before he puts out the "Definitive Edition" Saga Boxset after Episode 3.  Time will tell.  But since I don't care for many of the changes Lucas made in the Special Editions, I really wanted a set of DVDs of the versions that I grew up on...

Power of the Jedi / Re:Masters of the Darkside

Word on the street around here is that one of our members finally snagged himself one of these bad boys off of eBay...  Congrats!  I'll try to hide my jealous rage...   ;)

#1  I've got one MOMC, but need one more to open up and keep loose
#2  NEVER saw one at retail.  Picked one up in a Jorg Sacul trade a while back.
#3  Didn't open the one I've got.  Will open the next one.
#4  $40 is a fat chunk of change for this piece, but the Vader is really top of the line - the best one for an ANH likeness, and the Maul is pretty decent as well.  These are finally starting to drop down to the $30 range on eBay of late, so they're getting slightly more affordable.

But considering this was by far the toughest piece to acquire from the POTJ line, it's worth trying to pick one up just due it's rarity (NOT necessarily value).  I'm still losing my eBay auctions for these by a damned buck every time - I refuse to bid $30 yet!  $27-28 is my current max, which just ain't gettin' it done (for me at least)...   ;)

Some day...   :)

Saga '02-'04 / Re:Problems with Saga?
« on: January 16, 2003, 05:47 AM »
Problems with Saga?  Well, hmm...let me see:

  • Rehashes
  • Action Features
  • Scene-specific static poses/Ultra-wide stances
  • Lack of all-new O.T. selections
  • Poor paint jobs/quality control
  • Poor articulation
Oh, wait - did you mean distribution/retail store wise?  Oops, my bad!  Well in that case:

  • Target - #1 around here.  Lots of them, and often with new stuff
  • Toys 'R' Us - Pretty close to Target status as well
  • KB - Comes and goes, but a few occasional good scores
  • Wal-Mart - Only one store within 25 miles with ZILCH
  • K-Mart (see Wal-Mart)
Aside from the Wal-Mart exclusives, all in all I get by pretty well around here in L.A.  Sometimes it may take a couple months from initial release, but I usually manage to track everything down eventually (often with the assistance of my very capable Star Wars hunting wife).

But I've found that overall distribution around the U.S. really varies by region.  Some people have a ton of well stocked Wal-Marts nearby, while others get by very well with the Target chain as their only source.

That's why making some fellow collecting friends in one's area can be very beneficial - more eyes to scope stuff out, and you can look for your friend's needs while they look for yours.  Not to mention it's a great idea to make some good and honest acquantainces on the trading boards too!  That's where you can really start to cover the various geographic areas that can be rich with the Star Wars goodies that are nowhere near your neck of the woods.  Many of our Canadian (and foreign) collector friends will especially atest to this, I'm sure...

Sounds good Mike!  I'd be happy to go another round with ya'!  They'll run you $10.78 each (retail, with tax), plus shipping.  Is that cool?  You could always trade me that Deluxe Clonetrooper that you just won off our site for one of the droids!   ;)   A couple trash compactor sets for the three droids would also do the trick, if you've got any of those hanging around your area...   :)

Like I mentioned above, the Mint cards can run a little slim at D-land on occasion, but I'll see what I can dig up.  I'm due to make another trip down that way next weekend (January 25th/26th).  If you come across anything in the meantime, give me a hollar, otherwise I'll try to pick these 3 droids up for you.  Is it safe to assume I should only get them in MOMC condition?  Nothing with a fat crease on it if that's all that's left, right?  LMK.

Saga '02-'04 / Jedi Padawan 2-packs...
« on: January 15, 2003, 06:28 PM »
Though the "kid" figures are not usually my favorites, when I heard they'd be releasing a couple Padawan 2-packs, I at least had hoped they'd go with the cooler looking alien kids.  Hasbro didn't disappoint here!  Excellent choices.

They might be a bit shorter than your average figure, but getting two, nicely detailed figures in these sets is some pretty good bang-for-the-buck!  It's very cool that all 3 Padawans can hold their lightsabers 2-handed (why can't the regular Jedi figures do this for cryin' out loud?).  The helmets are a nice touch, but will be extra cool if by chance they are removable, which they just might be since they're listed as accessories to the Padawan figures at the Hasbro site.

I would've really liked to see some training remotes in there as well, but apparently Hasbro's dead-set on never giving us any of these in the 4" figure line.  I'm sure this is due to safety restrictions, but if the thing's the size of a freakin' pea, what's the big deal if a kid did munch one down?  It's not like the tiny little thing would even get lodged in their throat!

I'm really looking forward to the Ashla and Jempa set.  Excellent detailing with these two!  The Chian figure is equally nice, but his accompanying Yoda Master still doesn't quite look up to snuff to me.  Still not a very good AOTC likeness in the face, and his waist articulation looks pretty bad, though I realize it's necessary to sit in his hover chair, which is also included (finally).

All in all, big thumbs up for the 3 Padawans.   8)   Another Yoda...blah... :-\

JD Sports Forum! / Alright SPORTS fans, name your teams!
« on: January 14, 2003, 07:27 PM »
Just curious who out there is a sports fan, and who your teams are that you root for (any and all sports are welcome here)...

As for me, I'm a big sports nut, as is my wife.  I was born and raised, and still currently reside here in SoCal (both in L.A. and Orange County/Anaheim), so you'll see my allegiances based primarily on that.  I unfortunately can't help it if my teams are all better than yours, so please don't flame me for that (*cough*Scott*cough*)!   ;D   ;)

NBA:
Lakers (lifelong RABID fan - Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Shaq, Kobe, and of course Vlade... 'nuff said)   8)
Clippers (local team, gotta cheer the poor doofs on. Someday...)   :-[

NFL:
Raiders (lifelong fan, even before they ever moved down from Oakland long ago)   >:(
Rams (my hometown team growin' up - still a BIG fan despite their move)   ???
Packers (just because my wife LOVES them - don't ask me why)   :-*

MLB: (Baseball for the abbreviationally challenged)
Angels (lifelong diehard fan - not much to cheer for 'til this year though)   :D
Dodgers (lifelong diehard fan - what's goin' on lately here?)   ::)

NHL: (reduced to only a fairweather fan of late)
Kings (the only local team for a quite a while, not to mention that Gretzky fella)   :'(
Ducks (see Clippers, plus that Kariya/Selanne line was fun to watch)   :(

MLS:
Galaxy (not that big a soccer fan really, but they're the "World" Champs, so I had to add 'em in)   ;)

WNBA:
Sparks (see Galaxy)   ;)

Collegiate:
UCLA (lifelong diehard fan, wife went there, sister school to mine)   :)
UCSB (Santa Barbara) - (my former stomping grounds, but not too big at the national level)   :P

Olympics:
Team U.S.A. all the way baby!   8)
South Korea (I lived there for the last 3 years of High School)

Women's Tennis:
Anna Kournikova - She's WAY hot!   :-*

Billiards:
Jeanette Lee (The Black Widow) - See Anna Kournikova.   :-*

Hmm, looks like I went off on a little tangent at the end there, which would better be served elsewhere, in a separate, future thread...

So, how 'bout you?  Who do you root for, if anyone?  And if you generally despise sports altogether, that's totally cool too - I realize that they're not really for everyone...
