Watto's Junk Yard / Re:What do you do (job, student)?
« on: January 13, 2003, 07:56 PM »
...I'm a student. ;D

Speaking of that, I have to start studying for my Midterm Exams. :(
What kind of student are you BobaShek (what level)?  High School, college, graduate?  If one of the latter two, what's your major and what school do you attend?

Good luck on your midterms!

I'm on it Dale!  The Mint cards can occasionally be tough to find at Disneyland, but I'll see what I can do.  My next trip down that way should be Jan. 25/26th, so I'll let you know what I can dig up for ya'!

Just curious what all you Jedi Defender forum surfers out there do in the real world in terms of your profession...

As for me, I do Music Royalties Auditing.  I work for a firm that specializes in auditing the major record companies (Sony, Universal, Warner Bros., Capitol, EMI, etc.) on behalf of many of your favorite singers, bands, songwriters, and musicians.  Basically, we just scope out the record company's books, find all of the money that they're hiding or have just underpaid to the respective artist, put a report together with our findings, submit it, and get the artist a FAT chunk of change in settlement compensation (as if they're not all rich enough already - but who's counting).

We haven't done anything Star Wars related yet, but we were in negotiations to pick up John Williams as one of our clients last year, and it seemed to be a done deal, but I believe things fell through at the very last minute - likely due to the already huge backlog of work that we had at the time.  Though it hasn't come to fruition yet, from what I've heard, the partners at my firm are still trying to work out a deal with his people.  Now that would be totally sweet if I could audit his stuff!  Talk about some job satisfaction...

So if any of you know someone in the music business, and/or who's had a record hit the Billboard charts and wants to get back some of what is rightfully theirs, give me a shout!

LEGO / Re:Mini Line-What do you think?
« on: January 13, 2003, 02:00 PM »
I wanted to add that although I think these mini-sets are really cool, I'm mildly annoyed at Lego for the way they're getting that mini-Tie Bomber vehicle out:  By dividing it up into 4 parts, and including one quarter of it in each of the first 4 lego mini-sets.  Simple English: you have to buy all 4 mini sets, to make a complete Tie Bomber.

Certainly a clever marketing strategy on Lego's part, but it bothers me since I only collect the Original Trilogy stuff when it comes to Legos - no Prequel Legos.  Well, obviously that little selective shopping method of mine is now out the window, since I've got to pick up two Prequel mini sets here in order to get my complete OT Tie Bomber.  Bummer.  Oh well, at least they're only $4 a pop, so it doesn't put me out too much more.  And like I said, these are really cool little sets - even the Prequel ones, and especially the Tie Bomber!

On a side note, if you're looking into picking this line up, take note that the Vader's Tie/X-Wing mini set seems to be the hot one and is already becoming HTF in my area, so snag that one if you have the chance.  The other 3 sets are sitting on the shelves at several of my local Targets, so no apparent worries with those...

Saga '02-'04 / Rebel Technician accessory set
« on: January 12, 2003, 09:26 AM »
I've got to say that the Rebel Tech figure itself is pretty weak - just some rehashed figure parts moshed together to make this guy, but I'll take him anyways.  But with these Target accessory sets, it's really the accessories that make or break the set (ala the still HTF Scout Trooper set).  There's a few decent and unique pieces included with this one, in the various ladders and the batons.  I trust Hasbro was wise enough to verify that the ladders actually fit up against the various Rebel starfighters properly...

Certainly not all this set could've been, but so far these Target sets have generally been less than exciting, so the expectations have decreased somewhat now that we have an idea of Hasbro's goal with these.  Bummer...

Saga '02-'04 / New green A-Wing...
« on: January 12, 2003, 09:13 AM »
Assuming you found your way over to TPU to check out the new picture, what do you think of the green A-Wing?  Looks pretty spiffy to me, in an EU kind of way.  The sculpt was already great to begin with, and the green deco looks pretty good.  It appears to be coming in another nice window box similar to most of the previous vehicles of late.  It comes with a pack-in pilot figure which is always a plus.  It's hard to tell from the picture if it's an exact rehash of the version from the Rebel Pilot Cinema Scene 3-pack, but knowing Hasbro, I'm sure it is.

Bottom line is that it's another new vehicle (sorta), so I'm excited.  Though I'd prefer Hasbro focus its resources on polishing off the few remaining vehicles which have yet to appear in the modern era line first (Cloud Car, Sandcrawler, Jabba's Barge, Sith Infiltrator, etc.)

Watto's Junk Yard / Re:Your DVD Collection
« on: January 11, 2003, 06:03 PM »
Where'd you manage to get the OT DVDs? I been really back and forth about buying them lately, I want em, but I think I can wait another year, but then I'm afraid the real OT won't be released, only the SE OT.... argh.
Brad -
A ton of people found out about the bootleg OT DVDs in that huge, 9 month long Rebelscum thread Original Trilogy on DVD...finally!.  I'm sure that's where Scott got his from as well.  All three DVDs ran me $30 total (including shipping from Malaysia).  I was a little sketched out about buying them from some bootleggers, especially ones on the other side of the planet, but since so many people had nothing but good things to say about their purchase from these guys, I decided to go for it.  Very glad that I did!

They've got the original versions that I picked up, the Special Editions, and various other versions of the OT (like 5 star, etc.).  You should peruse that thread over at Rebelscum for the full scoop on the things, but be forewarned - it's 13 pages long!  The tricky part, is that the site that sells these bootleg DVDs changes it's URL every week or so, so tracking them down can be a pain sometimes.

Huh...I just checked the end of that thread and noticed you've already found your way over there having made the last post in it, so you're in the right place Brad!  Good luck the rest of the way!  The $30 is well worth spending, simply as insurance in case ol' George sticks to his word and never puts the original versions of the Trilogy out again.

Everything looks right to me Brad!  I don't know jack about Physics, but I'm pretty good with math (I'm an auditor), and all of your calculations there check out just fine with me...

Watto's Junk Yard / What else do you collect?
« on: January 11, 2003, 06:27 AM »
We all obviously collect Star Wars stuff (since you're here reading this post), but what else do you all (and your significant others) collect?  As for me, I also collect:
  • "Greatest Hits"/"Best of" CD's (about 800 from the 50's to present)
  • DVD's (see DVD thread)
  • Baseball Cards (1950's - 1990ish)
  • Coins (mostly just domestic)
  • HO Model Railroading stuff
I think that's about it for me...

As for my wife Patty, she doesn't collect squat, and it drives me NUTS!  Everybody should collect something!  I really wish she'd pick a hobby or collection, as it would make it a ton easier for me to randomly buy her stuff on my own for her birthdays, Christmas, etc.  She's the only person in either of our families who doesn't collect anything.  Weirdo... (but don't tell her I called her that)!  Oh well, I guess she can keep pretending that she collects Star Wars figures, since she winds up pimping me so much of the new stuff before I ever manage to find it in the stores!  What a gal...
