Revenge of the Sith / Re: Basic Figure Leak: Already?
« on: February 1, 2005, 12:13 AM »
Yeah my local Wally put the AOTC figs out over a week early.  I had every fig in the initial wave early.  Saw a few at Sears early too.
In the end this sucked because TRU and Zellers waited for the street date and then were stuck with tons of figs all the collectors already had...
Gotta love Canadian retail! :'(

Scored this Canadian Chief Chirpa in a bit of a bidding war with the illustrious Canadian collector wookiemonster.  A bit more than I wanted to pay but the Chief was the last  one I needed to complete my Jedi Canadian Ewok run ;D

Nice score on the Slave 1 Dale 8) How much did Customs ding you for on that out of curiousity?

In poor Mayor Mel's defense, there was a LOT of snow that time.  I know he's taken a lot of derision for that, but the mountains of snow clogging the streets were unreal.  The army was actually doing useful things, like bringing people to the hospital when the ambulance couldn't get through.
And our little dose of unreality is ending, even as I speak rain is turning to snow >:(

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: JD Book Club: What Are You Reading Now?
« on: January 13, 2005, 03:07 PM »
I posted this at the BHC as well, but I recommend:

"A Complicated Kindness" by Miriam Toews.   A super book about a Lou Reed-loving Mennonite girl growing up in a small religious town in Manitoba.
"The Corporation" by Joel Bakan.  A damning portrait of corporate shenanigans and control in our society.   This is no Michael Mooore-style pop propoganda,  instead it is serious, intellectual examination.  Highly recommended.

You don't need a credit card...if you buy the ROTK EE you get a booklet inside to order the case.   I sent a cheque for $3 as payment.

When I see Southern California's weather/fire woes, I always think the same thing:
It's just nature's way of telling people they shouldn't be living there.
All these subdivisions in the canyons.  Let's cut down all the green, making hillsides unstable and prone to collapse.  Let's build in canyons and gulches, right in the path of floodwaters which will race through because we cut all the vegetation down that would normally have slowed the water.
And oh yeah, when it isn't flooding, the place is a desert.  All our water is brought in from hundreds of miles away, permanently altering eco-systems on the other side of the mountains.  It's pretty dry usually, wonder why we have so many fires, jumping from roof to roof in those wonderful canyons.
And...I wonder why my kids are being eaten by cougars in the local park?  I heard someone mention encroachment on wildnerness, but...
I think SoCal is really a giant scam engineered by the construction and insurance industries.
That said, I hope your house is OK JediMac.  :o

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Urban exploration
« on: January 10, 2005, 01:46 PM »
Urban exploration is a neat concept.
I'm lucky enough to work in a job (grip on film sets) that takes me to many places off-limits to the general public.
I have been in many closed hospitals, factories,  and warehouses.  I have been inside abadonded houses and mansions that are falling apart.  I have been on the roofs and in the basements of many illustrious hotels, as well as the most expensive rooms and penthouses as well.
I have even been inside sewage treatment plants and the morgue, which is probably the most unpleasant place I've ever spent 10 hours.
All this and I get paid to do it!  One of the few perqs of working in the "glamourous" movie biz ;)

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: A thread about concerts.
« on: January 7, 2005, 01:26 AM »
I actually went to 3 big shows this year - The Beastie Boys, Rush, and The Tragically Hip on Canada Day.

Over the years I have probably seen The Hip more times than any other band, followed by Blue Rodeo.

Other concerts I have been to over the years (that I can remember):

Sloan (multiple times)
Rage Against the Machine
Van Hagar
Pink Floyd
Metallica
Guns N' Roses
Aerosmith
The Skydiggers
The Cult
The Lowest of the Low
Our Lady Peace
I Mother Earth
The Tea Party
Moist
54*40
Pearl Jam
Green Day
Spinal Tap  ;D 8)
Neil Young
Gordon Lightfoot
U2
The Rolling Stones
The Scorpions
David Lee Roth solo
Alice In Chains
Ozzy
Weezer
John Mellancamp
Robert Plant
Boston
The Black Crowes
AC/DC
Def Leppard
Cinderella ( a hair band I actually still kinda like)
Dread Zeppelin  ;D

And in a special sub-category, my embarrassing teen years hair metal tally in no particular order:

Poison
Winger
Warrant
Bulletboys
Great White
Aldo Nova
White Lion
Skid Row
