Collections / Mr. Black's Man Cave: makeover 2014 - update 07/26
« on: July 22, 2014, 04:55 PM »
Back in 2008 I had this idea to seriously take on reorganizing my 'man cave'. It's my own little room, where I have my collection on display and where I practice the fine art of customizing. It's a small room of 2m. x 3m. (6ft. x 9ft.), but it's mine. Mine!

Fast forward six years and I've finally started the makeover! Here's a series of photos showing the progress.

These two 32" Billy cabinets feature part of my collection and some random stuff as well. It all looks a bit sloppy. I was never happy with the way the cabinets met in the corner, but due to the size restrictions of the room, there wasn't another way of placing them.

Panning to the left you can see my customzing space:

And here I've disassembled one of the grey Billy cabinets and assembled the first two of four 16" Billy cabinets:

Another Billy and a Benno CD case waiting to be assembled:

This shelf above my workbench has to go, otherwise I can't fit all the Billy cabinets:

I don't have a big collection, but man, even a small collection consists of a lot of stuff. I'm just glad all of my action figures are packed away in bins in the attic:

This is a quick setup of the first three Billys, enabling me to maximize the use of the corner. Of course, there's quite a bit of empty space behind the middle cabinet, but that can be used perfectly for hiding the wiring of the lighting inside the cabinets:

Here's a test fitting of the LED strips:

I'm not sure what looks best: one on top and one on the bottom shelf, or two on top and two on the bottom. If only one, should I place it in the back, middle or front?

My girlfriend mentioned finding a mural or wallpaper of a starfield and applying that to the back and/or inner sides of the cabinets.

Thoughts on which direction I should go from here?

*** update 07/26 ***

I installed all of the LED strips and guided the cable through the back panel of each Billy:

The back panel of the Benno CD case hasn't been fixed with nails, as one would normally do. Instead it just sits loose, held in place by this metal plate.

This knob allows me to slide up the back panel of the Benno CD case, so I can reach the switches of the LED lighting units, that lie behind the Benno case....

... as demonstra-.... what the... ?!! Jawas?! I can't abide those disgusting creatures! Oh well, at least it's not a flock of mynocks!

Already working on a fourth Ven Zallow. Here's a wip shot of the fourth version of Ven. This time I'll sculpt his shin armour as well, instead of just using the lower legs of that GI Joe Wraith figure.

Finally got my hands on two carded Gamorrean Guards. One to display loose, on to keep MOC. Here's a shot with their ancient predecessor:

Modern Classifieds / WTB: various TLC/TVC, etc.
« on: March 22, 2014, 06:18 PM »
I'm looking to complete my "Kenner vs. Modern" figure collection. I have nearly every basic Kenner figure in C8-C9 condition and over time have acquired quite a few of the 'best' modern counterpart. Scott from JD.com set up this awesome feature Collect All 92, but unfortunately he hasn't been able to update it for quite some time now.

Nevertheless, it's some sort of a guide for me. I am therefore looking to purchase the following figures, loose but complete and in mint condition, of course:

C-3PO: Saga Endor C-3PO
Rebel Commando: VC26 Rebel Commando
Death Squad Commander: TVC Imperial Navy Commander
Lando Calrissian (Skiff Guard Disguise): TVC Deleted Scene Sandstorm Lando
TIE FIghter Pilot: VC65 TIE Fighter Pilot

Luke Skywalker (Stormtrooper Disguise): TLC Luke in ST Disguise
Princess Leia Organa (Bespin Gown): TVC Bespin Leia
AT-ST Driver: Endor AT-ST Crew Member
Barada: VC56 Kithaba pending
Nikto: VC99 Nikto pending

Luke Skywalker (Hoth Battle Gear): TVC Luke in Hoth Outfit
Hoth Rebel Soldier: VC68 Hoth Rebel Soldier
8D8: POTF2 8D8
EV-9D9: POTF2 EV-9D9
Lando Calrissian: VOTC Lando Calrissian

Warok: TLC Endor Battle Pack Warok
Imperial Commander: TLC Endor Battle Pack Col. Dyer
Luke Skywalker (Battle Poncho): TLC Endor Battle Pack Luke

In fact, I'd take the entire battlepack, should you have it :D

Lando Calrissian (General Outfit): VC47 General Lando
Squid Head: POTJ Tessek
2-1B: POTF2 2-1B
Han Solo (Carbonite): Saga '06 Han in Carbonite => possible Black Series release?
Luke Skywalker: Resurgence of the Jedi Luke

Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight): TVC Luke Skywalker (lightsaber construction)
Bespin Security Guard (caucasian): ??
Klaatu (Skiff Guard Outfit): ?? (POTF2 is the only 'modern' one, right?)
R2-D2 (with pop-up lightsaber): ??
C-3PO (with removable limbs): ??

Anakin Skywalker (Sebastian Shaw): ??
Yoda: ??
Ree Yees: future Black Series release?

Let me know if you can help me out. I live in the Netherlands, prefer 1st Class International Airmail and can pay through Paypal.

Thanks!

This is a follow up from the same client who commissioned the Twi'lek smuggler. Turned out to be a very fun project to work on, with quite a bit more sculpting than anticipated at first.

Rachi Sitra is a Twi'lek character from the SW Galaxies Trading Card game: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Rachi_Sitra

Parts used:
- ROC Cover girl: head, sculpted lekku / arms, sculpted sleeves and gauntlets / lower body, sculpted waist band
- 25th. Scarlett: upper body, resculpted
- ROC Baroness: legs

- various pieces of Jedi softgoods
- lightsaber from the parts bin, blade and hilt connect with neo magnets

Star Wars Action Figures / Re: Mr. Black's customs: Ven Zallow v3
« on: January 19, 2014, 06:46 AM »
Back in 2010 I made a commissioned diorama of the duel between Darth Malgus and Jedi Master Ven Zallow. Later on, I was asked to make another Ven Zallow and last year again someone wanted me to make a custom figure of this character.

Version 3 is quite different from the first two. The client wanted quite a few changes, most notably on the armour. This is the reference pic:

And this is the custom figure:

Parts used:
- Resolute Duke: head, resculpted the hair
- ROC Duke in RIA suit: upper body, upper arms. Custom made chest belt, sculpted device
- ROC Ripcord in RIA suit: shoulder armour (connects with neo magnets), lower arms (sculpted gauntlets), hands
- 25th Destro Iron Grenadier: lower body, sculpted armour
- 25th Zartan: upper legs, sculpted armour
- Cobra Commander in Battle Armour: knees
- 25th Wraith: lower legs, feet
- Order 66 Mace Windu: cloak w/shortened sleeves
- lightsaber from the parts bin, blade and hilt connect with neo magnets

Earlier this year, I got a message from a fellow who asked if I could duplicate the Twi'lek smuggler I made in 2011. I didn't have the same base body, but version 2 turned out pretty nice and somewhat different looking.

The commissioner also showed interest in an older custom of mine, a Zeltron female, and bought that as well:

More pics, including WIP shots can be seen here

Made from:
- SW Cesi Doc Eiriss: head (modified/resculpted)
- GI Joe: Resolute Baroness: body (modified chest)
- custom made double barreled blaster
- blaster from the parts bin

LOL, I am very, very good at starting projects..... Believe me I've got dozens of long term stuff going on! :D But if I recall correctly I actually have the Trandoshan primed and the Wookiee built. I think  ;D

Thanks Paul!

This is my last pair of customs I had to hold back for you, until I received confirmation of receipt  ;D As some of you may know, ImperialShipYards mods LucasClones and Tamer host the Custom Action Figure News podcast. CAFN is fast approaching the 50th episode and it's a great podcast for the customizing community. Earlier last year I decided to immortalize these two fine gents in plastic action figure form.

So, without further doo-doo, may I present two very respectable officers among the ranks of the fine Imperial navy: Chad Hitchcock and Shawn Groves!

Recipe:

Fleet Admiral Chad "LucasClones" Hitchcock:
- Admiral Ozzel body
- Galactic Marine head w/sculpted moustache
- Lt. Jundland cap

Lieutenant (Commander when wearing the armour, nice going Hasblow ;) ) Shawn "Tamer" Groves:
- VTC AT-AT Commander body and accessories
- GI Joe Chuckles head cast, supplied by DocOutlands

This female Endor Rebel Scout was made for the 2012 ImperialShipyards Secret Santa round.

Recipe:
- Zartana head cast by Starwarsgeek (thanks, Dave!)
- GI Joe ROC Cover Girl body
- Saga '06 Endor Luke Skywalker poncho, belt, blaster
- TAC/TLC (?) Hoth Han Solo binoculars
- blaster rifle from the parts bin

Star Wars Action Figures / Re: Lando's Customs

Quality stuff here, man. Love that Jess figure, that one's plain awesome!

Two more updates of what's in store. I have so many projects I just hope to be able to finish a couple of them this year  :D

First up is a kit bash Durge, using parts from the different Durge figures Hasbro has put out so far. Each of them is too short in my opinion, so I made him a bit taller. He'll be part of a Clone Wars diorama, featuring the scene of him battling a group of Jedi on the moon of Ohma-D'un. Here he is stomping down on Anakin (Obi-Wan's the real victim in the scene, but he was unavailable for rehearsal...)

Apart from some work on the feet joints, the build is pretty much done.

A project that's been on the backburner for a long time is my Speeder Bike chase diorama. But I picked it up again, learned a thing or two on articulation from fellow customizer Spudafett and completed the first of five or six super articulated Biker Scouts:

Darksiders Ulthane and Death:
Ulthane is close to being paint, need to finish his sculpting his hammer. Death has finally recieved a suitable hairdo, after numerous sculpting attempts didn't work out.

More to come in the coming days!
