Middle Earth / Re: LOTR Trilogy Figures
« on: November 14, 2004, 04:03 AM »
Thanks Beth,

Now I just gotta sort through and figure out what's out there he doesn't have.  I know Gamling's among them, but there's a LOT more.  Moria Orc and some olders like that that were tough to get, but it's mostly new stuff...  At least the Shelob wave onward.  And I wanted one of her too.   ::)

I've had an odd feeling about the arms too Dave.  Namely, the large (seemingly) pins in his elbow joints.  Possible he's action-feature laden...  Tough to say without seeing his back where a lot of the features showed their ugly heads in the gigunda buttons and such.

Only feature I ever really liked (other than Total Control Mace Windu, which I think a line of figures like that would be cool so long as they had normal versions) was the SBD's explosion feature with its BD chest plate too.  It worked, it wasn't obtrusive, and scattering SBD parts around a diorama looked great.  :)

23's a lot KBZ, but I'm only envious...  I don't know that, at $10, I'd be able to justify that many.  I'd want them, but this month's had a special occassion, next is X-Mas, Jan. is a special Birthday, and of course Feb.'s Valentine's day...   >:(

Dammit I want 20+ VOTC Stormies too!

I still have my little 6 man squad here though...  This is the first figure since the modern line began that really had me actually down on the floor playing with it.  If Hasbro did EVERY army builder like this (and made sure it was available), I'd die a happy camper.  I'd not care if they made a single other figure, just as long as every army builder was done this way (resculpts and newbies).

I guess that was my thought on it exactly Jared, in that his word is taken with a lot of weight behind it, yet it is a regional observation and I'd say his region is the exception on this one, and not the rule from what I hear.

Antilles is a figure I would buy another couple of if I saw them, but damned if I can't find one in my area...  And I was out last night thinking about this and I honestly didn't see many Dodonna's at all either.  I saw one on a HORRIBLY trashed card at a Target.  That's it.

At the same Target sits Hoth leftovers (mostly soldier and R-3PO) among some other 03/04 stuff, and the odd OTC remnant.  Not much.

It's like the guy who sees dozens of VOTC and says they're pegwarmers.  Maybe for him, but even the ANH wave in my area moves...  Slowly at WM's where it was overordered, but ya know I don't see many Luke's or Leia's at all anymore, and Han/Ben is dwindling.

ROTJ comes into stores (Target/TRU) by several cases at a time, and they always sell out.  I saw a LOT of Boba Fett last night though, but the sheer # of him implied to me that EVERY other figure in the case blew out of there, and he seems to be selling too.

I don't think Star Wars has jumped in popularity all of a sudden...  The blitz surrounding the DVD's wasn't exactly awe inspiring or anything.  I just think good figures are proving that they WILL sell.  Be it $10 pricetags or not.

And I guess trashing the Antilles figure, which ironically was an old review of mine that we just got posted, and one in which I praised the figure quite a bit (even with his few drawbacks), just happened to be an instance where it stuck out to me.  I just didn't agree with the sentiment at all.  To me, he was a figure LONG overdue and I think he's done very well at retail.

Jocasta's Reading Room / Re: What's your LEAST favorite book?
« on: November 12, 2004, 02:56 AM »
Amen...

Killing a main film character for the sake of gaining readership and interest is like lying to get attention.

It's not constructive, it doesn't offer anything overly exciting or new, and it really does nothing more than piss people off at you.

Chewbacca has been one of the most underutilized characters in EU because few people beyond Timothy Zahn had any ability as authors to actually utilize Chewie like Lucas did in the films.  The creators of Southpark use Kenny more creatively than authors in Star Wars used Chewbacca.

That's ****** up, if I may be so blunt.

And at least Kenny's killed off interestingly in South Park, so he's still one up on Chewbacca's death.

Ultimately though, the NJO's other main failing is the Yuzahn Vong.  Super Villains from somewhat of a distance away who just happen to show up when it seems like everything is ok.  They seem to "assimilate" at least parts of their victims.  They're "unstoppable", and have no regard for other species...  Blah blah blah...

Yes, Star Trek did it with the Borg first, the Breen, Species 90210 (or whoever they were from Voyager) and their organic ships and stuff, etc., etc., etc...  It's a tired Sci-Fi ploy to create new threats to a played out world.

To me, Luke's resurgence of the Force and FOrce Users (and his somewhat haphazard way about it) would be enough plotline to keep new enemies arising.  New species shouldn't be introduced as more of a threat than anything ever to Luke Skywalker though, as it sorta cheapens the movies and their point.

That's part of the problem though.  Luke and the films are intended to, kinda, imply that Luke's faced the ultimate trial he'll face.  Still there's more tactful ways to go about it.

Zahn had a knack here I believe then.  He didn't need force users to cause trouble so much as he used political and military strife, and an enemy who merely was smart.  The Yssilimari were kinda wonky but they weren't the Vong so I bought it some more.

I like NJO's establishment of Luke bringing about a, well, New Jedi Order...  The enemies and Chewie's death were just horrible turns though, IMO, and they become really just detractors from the series.

I'd like to actually see some EU that establishes a war of attrition that the New Republic faced with the Empire.  Rather than this "Warlords" and "infighting" crap with the Empire, I think the story should've been one where they actually held it together.

Nazi Germany wouldn't have collapsed had Hitler died in 1940...  If anything, the Allies would've faced a much more destructive and competent enemy without him.  Perhaps the Empire could've had a more fitting scenario for it.

Anyway, that's a rant I'll end here...  Needless to say, EU's something I'm picky on because there's just too much BAD in there.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Star Tours thread... Wave 4 coming soon?
« on: November 12, 2004, 02:44 AM »
Yup.  The top one sports some nice decals on his back, separate hose pieces, a ball/socket head...  The boxy one isn't as nice, but the "cheap" droid feel is there.

The rusty one though, he rocks.  A figure that holds up agains thte BEST droids Hasbro has offered.  $10's steep, but if they came down at all I think I'd buy two more anyway.  They look like any droid you'd see in any scene in the movies.

I was reading Q&A recently at GH.com the other day, and Adam Pawlus said in it that Captain Antilles was a pegwarmer (or something to that effect), and kinda trashed the figure for being made...

It may be the case in some areas, but in Pittsburgh he's not overly common, or "pegwarming" by any means.  I think his potential as an army builder has helped him sell steadily.  Dodonna's a LITTLE more prevelant, but not by much.

I just didn't see him as the pegwarmer some have...  I run into one here and there, maybe a few at a K-Mart or KB where figures are more $, but at WM's, Targets, and TRU's, Antilles is drying up.

Same with Ozzel and other of that ilk...  The customizers and army builders have spoken in my book, and they'll pick one of those up every whipstitch it seems.

The same thing happens with BBI's Elite Force figures at Toys R Us.  They get a glut, then slowly but surely they sell, one by one.  It's really an impressive thing to kinda monitor when you're shopping.

Some folks out htere must have impressive armies going.  I wanted another Antilles or two but damned if I can get them now.  Gotta check some of the lower traffic stores perhaps.

I wish they'd clearance old figures.  I'd take a bunch of that bronze one with the hoses and stuff, and the boxy one with the welding arm.

I thought those were 2 really decent, Star Wars-y figures.  Especially the bronze one.  THAT is a nice figure.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: VOTC/OTC Purchases
« on: November 11, 2004, 09:26 PM »
I completed my VOTC at the local meeting in Pittsburgh here last weekend, so now I just need my extras (Stormies), maybe an extra Fett and Chewie, and then I'm 100% done on VOTC.

Then I need a Gam Guard, Scanner tech, and if I ran into one and felt it was worthy I'd ponder getting a Bib, but probably not.

Then, onto the post OTC....

It feels good not being WAY far behind like I had been for a while.

Here's a plea...

To any of you who possibly picked up an extra Sandcrawler (for whatever reason), if you'd like to recoop some cost, I'd like an RA-7 pack-in droid from one.

Anyone able to help me out that maybe got an extra perhaps?  Just IM me here or something.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Halo 2
« on: November 11, 2004, 08:59 PM »
No problem...  I think there's more out there that sympathize with you than you know, it's just that the vocalness of the pro-HALO group is immense.

I like HALO, don't get me wrong.  It's a good game.

The thing is, it's not great.  The original wasn't great, and beyond the vehicle combat didn't have any "great" revolutionary aspect.  HALO2, really for all intents and purposes, doesn't improve on HALO1 very much at all so I'm not impressed again.

I'm thinking HALO2 will be a fun game to play...  That if you have some buddies together, or XBLive, that it'll be fun to play, but in the end it's NOT "special".

-Thief took FPS games to a new level by inventing the style of gameplay where stealth outlasts "Run & Gun" gamers.

-DOOM took FPS from the darkages and gave a new, refreshing story and gameplay features, as well as set the bar for "shocking" effects.

-Wolfenstein was the birthplace of FPS gaming.

-Ultima Underworld opened up the idea of RPG's and FPS's becoming one in the same.

-Dark Forces was the revolutionary new FPS of its time that improved on all the previous engines with new features and gameplay aspects, improved graphics, and set it all in a galaxy far far away.

-Goldeneye took Console FPS's and put them on the map as games that COULD be played on a console and be just as enjoyable as on a PC.

-Jedi Knight gave FPS gaming a new feature through using the force and sabers, and because of its setting (along with a great story, graphics, and engine for its time), it became legendary.

-Medal of Honor took FPS gaming to a new level of realism, practically recreating the opening footage of Saving Private Ryan and making it playable....

-Call of Duty built on MOH's popularity through improved graphics, improved AI, improved gameplay features and realism.

And I'm definitely missing games here, like the Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon series that set the bar for tactical FPS games and realism, Half Life series, etc...

The fact of the matter is that HALO is just in the middle amongst all those games.  It is a good "anchor" game for the X-Box, and it's fun...  It's graphics show the XB's potential generally, but will never compete with the PC and its ever evolving graphics abilities.  HALO2 is much the same, and didn't innovate the original HALO much at all.  It'll just be a prettier, and maybe slightly "new" experience for most.

And to that end, nobody can convince me that HALO is "great".  It's just "good", like so many FPS's before it and so many to come after.  It'll be fun, I'll likely pick up HALO2 after the initial geekdome subsides on it, but I'm not gonna wet my pants like (one in particular at Scum) some folks are acting like.  I'll get it, have fun, beat it, and likely not bother with it after I find something its equal or better.

I have an XB, I like my XB, and I'm feeling like I made a good deal by getting it for the price I paid, but HALO just isn't as good as certain people claim.

I've been really lucky to have talked to vets from all over the world.  They're great people.

There's some truly frightening, enlightening, shocking, saddening, and eye-opening things on the History Channel right now (I'm watching it as I type this), and it's worth making sure you check it out just so you always hear some of the words from those who really have experienced war.

Our soldiers today, whether we agree with why or not, are in the midst of similar circumstances, and I hope they're all going to come home, even if that's not a hope that can be fulfilled.
