Gentle Giant / GG Jumbo Vintage Walrusman
« on: May 13, 2013, 06:05 PM »
So, did anyone else order this figure?  I pre-ordered from my comic shop about a year ago and just received word this weekend that they would not be able to fill my order.   >:(  >:(  >:(  I looked online and apparently many people already have these AND it is available on the GG website, so kind of pissy that my  comic shop is unable to get them as planned.  I prefer to order from them because I get free shipping, which makes these a lot more affordable.  I scarambled and found another site via Amazon that only cost a little more ($76.66 shipped), but am curious to know if anyone else had the same problem.  It looks like Hammerhead is already out there, but still listed as pre-order for me, so I wonder if I'll have the same damn problem.

Collections / JediJman's Collectible Man Cave
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:29 PM »
I moved to a new home in December, so am fortunate to have the opportunity to completely rebuild my Collectible Man Cave.  I tested this name with the neighbors and got far more respect from the guys than referring to it as my "Star Wars Room."  Anyway, I want to track the progress on here and solicit feedback as I go.  I have a general plan for what I want to do, but am very open to suggestions.

The room was completely unfinished space (16 x 14 at the widest part), so over the last few months I've picked up and installed a padded carpet, one wall of peg board, and adjustable black shelving around the perimeter.  I decided not to frame up the rest of the room, since I'd just put shelves in front of it.  I'm also leaving the ceiling open as I want to hang a lot of ships and like the "warehouse feel" of it.

The next step was to track down some lighting.  See what I did there?   ;)  I found a great deal on Craigslist, with 6 track bars and 18 lights + bulbs for $50.  I had to pay another $50 in connection bars, wiring, screws, and an outlet, but happy to get this done for about $100.  Since it's unfinished, I also had to cut and install some wood cross pieces to bolt the track lights onto.  Here's a shot of the finished track light system.  I may put up more lights if needed.

I plan to start stocking the shelves with my 12" collection first, which will go on the far wall, top shelf.  There's about 2 feet of clearance between the top shelf and the rafters and my shelves are 2 feet deep.  So, I decided to build some rough, but sturdy risers across the top.  I won't win any carpentry awards, but this was a cheap and quick afternoon project that I hope will help spread out the big guys.

12" Figures / 12" Figure Discounts and Sales
« on: February 1, 2013, 03:17 PM »
Does anyone have any tips for saving dough at Sideshow?  I'm about ready to cave on some crazy expensive Hot Toys figures, so figure dI would check for sales or promo codes first.  Thanks!

Collector's Tips / Overhead Lighting
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:50 AM »
So, I'm in the midst of building a new Star Wars room in the basement and would love some tips on lighting.  There are no windows in the room and I currently just have one exposed 100w bulb.  The room is about 14x16 lined with black shelving on two walls. The ceiling is unfinished, so recessed lights aren't really an option.

I was initially thinking of putting in suspended flourescent shop lights.  These are bright and relatively inexpensive I think, but they tend to cast a harsh light and I'm concerned that they wouldn't project enough light under the shelves.  I also don't want to hear a hummmmm all the time.  Track lighting seems like a good option, but I have no idea where to start.  LEDs would be nice energy savers, but do they give off enough light?  I also don't have a ton of dough to plunk down right now, so looking for a lower cost solution.

Any ideas?  Help me JDers, you're my only hope!

TV-9D9 / Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out
« on: October 8, 2012, 11:43 PM »
Did anyone happen to catch the Lego SW Special: The Empire Strikes Out?  I found this by accident weekend before last and the kids thought it was hilarious.  We've re-watched it 3-4 times already.  I wish there was an ongoing Lego Star Wars series.

Vintage Kenner / Vintage Figure Checklist
« on: April 24, 2012, 04:54 PM »
Anyone have a good source for vintage figures and variations?  I've been looking around on the net, but prettymuch everything I've found is incomplete.  I'm not looking for 26 variations of Obi-Wan where the hue of the bottom of his left foot is slightly different, or the placement of the "Made in China" stamp is slightly lower versus another.  I just want the real difference makers like figure accessories, differences in molding, noticable paint differences.  Anyone have a good resource?

Collections / JediJman's Month o' Vintage
« on: April 20, 2012, 06:03 PM »
I recently made a massive purchase of vintage ROTJ/POTF2 figures from a guy in Phoenix.

 - Original figure cost based on price tags: $150
 - My paying price including shipping: $1750   :o
 - Getting a box of 50 well preserved vintage figures in one box: Priceless!

I've had a few requests for pictures, so I'm going to host a month of vintage on the site.  I'll try to post 2 figures per day as I go through them with a few scattered comments.  Hope you enjoy...

Gentle Giant / Gentle Giant Jumbo Greedo
« on: April 20, 2012, 07:27 AM »
Does anybody know when this guy is scheduled to be released?  I pre-ordered him on another site that had him listed as Feb 2012 release, which has obviously come and gone.  I had 3 other figures in the basket, so anxiously awaiting Greedo to get all of them.

Other Collectibles / Weird Stuff

Anybody collect these?

What the hell!?  I haven't figured out if I should be more shocked by the price it went for or the fact that there's even a market for stuff like this.  Weird.

Okay, so I want to get people's opinions on this.  I had a recent experience where I asked more than the original retail price for an extra carded figure.  Without going into too much detail, the figure is over a year old and I was going to put it on Ebay, as it's going for 4-5 times the original price.  I offered someone $5-10 less than the lowest price I found on Ebay thinking I was going to help them out.  That person was pretty disgusted that I was asking anything beyond the original retail.

So I want to hear what people on JD think about asking more than your original retail price for figures.  The easy route is to say vintage figures used to cost $2 and now they easily go for 10-20 times that, but those are really old collectibles.  What about more recent stuff?  Toy Fair Vader and FF Weequay come to mind as items that shot up in price right away.  I'm a kubrick collector and it just goes without saying that if you want a chase figure, you're going to pay way more than the original price.  The recent vintage Wedge fiasco is another example.  What if Hasbro was not rereleasing this figure and you had a spare available?  How would you handle it?  What if you found a Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt at retail - would you sell it to a HW guy for $.99?

I'm much more inclined to sell at cost with friends or people that have helped me out in the past.  When TRU had their crazy sale on the EU wave ($5 for the first figure, $1.50 for the second), I bought multiple sets of the figures and offered them up to the MN group at average cost I paid per figure.  A year later, I'd be less inclined to offer that price, especially to someone I don't really know if the figures are going for $15-20 each on Ebay.  If I buy extra, its generally with the thought of helping out the MN JD collector group or trading for something rare I need later on, but when it comes time to sell, I want to know what others would do.

My own perspective is that rare stuff is going to cost more.  As the Kubrick guys know, I just shelled out a lot of money for some rarer Kubes that would have cost much much less at retail.  Since I'm one of the guys willing to pay more for something rare, then I have an expectation that I should get also something more for something rare.  Doesn't have to be top dollar, especially if I'm helping out someone at JD or a friend of a friend, but I do think asking more than retail is fair.  Am I off base on this line of thinking?  Would appreciate hearing others' point of view.

Thanks!
