The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: San Diego Comic Con 2014
« on: July 26, 2014, 06:26 PM »
Comic-Con impressions:

Unimpressed by the 3 3/4" TBS offerings...I need new characters that aren't clone repaints to get me interested. I might pick up the Ceremonial Leia somewhere down the road but beyond that, nope.

6" TBS is still not tempting me. Shadow stuff before C3PO is not a good indicator of a line they are trying to hit all the key notes on.

Happy with the Rebels stuff. Looks like a good kids' line, with vehicles and everything going for it. I hope they (and the show) do well. Especially liked the handling of the female/potential pegwarmer characters: put 'em in a two pack with a trooper and hopefully the two together will make the purchase happen. This almost feels like Hasbro is really trying for a change. I like the Troop Transport...I had one as a kid and this looks like a good update. The icing on the cake would have been a brainwashing unit, but its absence is understandable.

Regular Legends/Mission stuff was kind of boring. Bossk and IG-88 are great figure choices, but underwhelming after so many years...Wicket and Scout Trooper will be coming home with me, though, that Wicket is fantastic. The only star for Legends was the Temple Guard--I don't want it, but it looks so good I might buy it when I see it.

Gentle Giant / Re: Jumbo Jabba

Yes, I didn't think this would happen either. I was unimpressed with the Jumbo concept when it was announced, saw some in person and "got it," and I'm now waiting for a few key figures to pick up once they are made. Now I feel like a Jumbo Rebo Band is actually gonna happen, too. That is really cool, and something I would be willing to buy.

Forget the Jumbo Rancor, the next "impossible" benchmark that I would love to see them tackle--Jumbo Death Star Playset!

Who ever asked for a new Chewbacca?  (Looks around)

I keep asking for a ESB Chewbacca with Threepio sculpted to his back...but yeah, this ain't that.

Did we ever get a toy that looked like that?

Action Fleet Alpha Series.

Star Wars Rebels / Re: Star Wars Hero Series Millennium Falcon

Well that is a surprise. My 4 year old son couldn't have cared less about the big Vader when we saw him in stores. Certainly sounds like your son is enjoying it, though. I don't mind being wrong if somebody's having fun.

And on topic, you find the $60 price tag of the new MF reasonable?  I'm still not sold. Granted, I fully expect to hear all the grumbling next year when the BMF returns for the movie at $300. I feel like $40 has always been the ceiling price for a value toy. At $60, parents are usually expecting something in the deluxe range.

Yeah, I sure didn't get the Jakks Pacific giant Vader either. Something a clueless Aunt would buy a kid to try to impress, but not a toy to be played with at the end of the day. But at least it is a perceived value...and the "shampoo bottle" figures fill the large cheap niche even better, and are manageable enough in size.

The point about future releases makes sense. Gotta go with the product with legs.

I certainly remember zooming around simple rotocast non-figure spaceships of about a foot or less as a kid so I get that side of the play pattern. The scale and price just seem way out of reason for what it wants be.

Maybe it's just me, but sixty bucks still isn't cheap.  Had they cut the size in half and charged thirty, then I might see it as a kid-friendly version of the BMF. Especially because then a kid might be able to, you know,  play with it.

It just seems like the approach is so scattershot lately...if they wanted a big ship for the kids, why not make a hollow non-figure-compatible Ghost and capitalize on Rebels? Is there any way this Falcon uses the mold from the BMF to reduce costs? Being hollow with no opening parts, I just don't see how...

I just don't get it.  ???

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Regional Pop (Soda) You Love?
« on: July 14, 2014, 07:04 PM »
I was born in Wisconsin and we called it soda there. Moved to Ohio as a kid and had to relearn it as pop. I am waging a one man war to switch it to soda around here. Everyone takes the eccentricity well. Very few people even comment on it.

We just started getting Cheerwine here. Bright red and tastes like cherry Dr Pepper. When I was a kid my dad worked for a local soda bottler called Graf's in WI. I often wonder if they're still around.

I cut the collection so far back ("only" 400 figures or so) a few years ago, long before thought of the sequel trilogy actually getting made cropped up, I think I'll be okay without the new line...with a couple exceptions. I'll probably be in for a version of Luke Han and Leia from EpVII, because middle-age versions of them will always be a part of Star Wars to me, no matter how I feel about the bulk of the movie. It's the same thing as the very few Prequel figures I still have...Anakin and Obi-Wan from the Final Duel are always going to be on display, because they were a part of the childhood daydreams that go along with Star Wars for me. Stuff like Podracers and Dexter Jettster, not so much.

Like someone else posted, I have this collection as a link to my childhood first and foremost. I hope beyond hope that my 4 year old gets into Rebels, because I want to get him those figures and start him on his Star Wars journey right. I'm excited for that aspect, and if he wants the figures from the new movies I fear he is going to be the most spoiled child on the planet because I will buy him everything...but just for his childhood, not mine.

The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: Black Series Rumors
« on: July 10, 2014, 11:10 PM »
To get technical, to the carded completist a Vintage figure on a Black Series card is a new figure, so they are right...from a certain point of view. Seems to me they're playing up the fact that assortments won't be jacked by figures from previous waves is all. But how many figures come in a case these days? Will this "wave" be spread over four cases or so?

Not much to that list that interests me so far. They're all redos of figures I find okay or EU I don't care for. Never saw an INC so I might pick up one of those if the paint looks good, otherwise I'll be happy with my 30AC version.

It is fun to see EU Legends figures still being manufactured.

I find Yoda and his horse**** articulation count for $10 to be far more offensive as figures go.  My TVC Yoda will be hitching a ride in the pack I think.

Don't forget the pack comes with the new Yoda. So to use it you'll still need to buy it.

The pack is disappointing looking to me too though. Just too huge like those Chewie/3PO packs have always been. I'm still waiting for a good looking sculpted version of that, too.

That "Hasbro beauty pic" is amazing. The deco is phenomenal--and that's saying something on a white-on-white costume.

This is the first 6" to tempt me, I can't wait to see what the production pieces look like.

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Star Wars Episode VII
« on: July 1, 2014, 08:47 AM »
Well this rumor puts the other developments lately in perspective. If Iger and Abrams are going at it already, it's no wonder they've already lined up a different director for 8 and 9. If Abrams gets his way (because as the director, he could slow it down to the point that it just can't recover) he may force Disney to hold off until 2016.

But with so many teams working on these movies (especially the first stand-alone and Ep 8 ) they can keep their December openings for the franchise going forward. If they left Abrams to do all the sequels, then they'd be locked in to him starting 8 only after he finishes 7, but they have sidestepped that by potentially getting 8 up and running before 7 is completed. A shrewd business move, and one that is lending weight to this new rumor for me.

That means 2 movies in 2016, with the standalone landing only six months after episode 7, further "punishing" Abrams by giving his film the least amount of promotional time. Of course that also punishes the profits for everyone, but there is not much that can be done about that if Abrams is determined to see a summer release.

As for changing the script to work around Ford? Yikes. That doesn't sound like good storytelling.

I hope they plan on making a hell of a lot more of these than they did of the Fett w/ Carbonite.

Wait, isn't this the same set everyone was just saying was pointless and uninspired? Making it hard to get is its only selling point, don't take that away!

Vintage Kenner / Re: Modern Vintage Repros and Bootlegs

"vintage" Grand Moff Tarkin. Imperial Commander's body painted to the correct color scheme, rank, etc. with a vintage Battlestar Galactica guy's head. I really like it.

Yes, I think that was established.

EDIT: And I believe this was the Slave Leia in question:
