Star Wars Rebels / Re: Star Wars Rebels Saga Legends Figures
« on: February 23, 2015, 10:08 AM »
I believe the ATDP Pilot helmet comes with the Ezra figure as an accessory. Probably could have just as easily sculpted a generic guy under there if they were gonna reuse the helmet. Weird.

Edit: nope, from pictures I see they are 2 different sculpts. Curiouser and curiouser...

Star Wars Rebels / Re: Star Wars Rebels - 5 POA Animated Style Figs
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:17 PM »
Here here, Darby. Good points all around.

I'm not much of a presence around here anymore because there are, like 8 figures left that I want Hasbro to make to finish my collection and I'll be done. I pop in to see if they're coming, but the rest of what's going on really doesn't concern me anymore. My 5-year old son loves watching Rebels with me, though, and has started buying the Rebels figures, so these days I am advocating for him, filtered through my own experiences with this hobby. :) I had my fun, now it's his turn, and I feel I am in a good position to guide him on his journey.

My son was looking at my figures and when I told him they made ones of the Rebels characters now, he wanted to get some to play with. He went to the store with Christmas money and we found that all that were available were the Zeb/Stormie 2-pack, Artoo and Threepio, and the Kanan/Ezra/Obi-Wan pack at TRU. None of the places we have been have had any of the single figures, and I suspect we nearly missed the Sabine/Stormie 2-pack (we saw Wicket and the Scout Trooper on the pegs.) Since then we have looked for more to no avail. We have also found no Rebels vehicles on the shelves...he is a big walker fan and wants one of those as well as the Phantom.

Last week he caved and bought a Bespin Luke/Darth Vader 2-pack just to add some more characters to his toybox (and he was excited about a pack with two lightsabers for instant dueling possibilities.) Routinely his figures play in and around my BMF which I get down for him and he uses it to substitute for the Ghost.

His favorite characters on the show are Chopper and Sabine, and he has been sad that he hasn't been able to find them yet. I promised him they're coming, as are the Inquisitor and other bad guys. I am happy with what we have been shown as in the pipeline, and I have to hold out hope that this stuff will show up somewhere soon in quantities that will allow him to get what he wants. I would be crushed for him if he missed his only chance at getting a Chopper or Inquisitor at the store last year.

I love that Sabine, Zeb and Hera all come with Stormtroopers. I wish there was an option to get Chopper, Kanan and Ezra that way, too, so he could build up a squad to fight. He is having fun dipping his toe into collecting figures, and so far the frustration of not being able to find what he wants hasn't stopped him since it is so early for him. Time will tell if things work out well for his collection. I feel so blessed to have a young Star Wars fan in the family.

The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: Toy Fair 2015
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:24 AM »
Not very surprised at the lack of anything new at Toy Fair. Even a TFA Preview Figure (or wave)deserves/commands its own press release. In effect it would be slumming in NYC.

As for a Ghost ship this year, I am still in the camp that doubts it. While I do now believe a BMF reissue is a done deal (and will cost $300) and that actually does free up the time and resources to tool a big ship, I gotta go with my gut and say they would use that slot on whatever big new design they have with TFA (Bad guy ship?) In the end, EP VII will never have another Christmas to support it, the attitude there has to be "now or never."

The long game could be a Ghost in 4th quarter 2016, if the standalone movie is a Han Solo or Boba Fett vehicle (no pun intended.) Since their signature ships are already done (well) then a 3rd season Ghost might stand a chance at getting made.

TV-9D9 / Re: Star Wars Rebels - Season One (Spoilers)
« on: February 3, 2015, 05:37 PM »

I think Fulcrum is definitely Bail Organa.

I have the feeling it's Leia. And I was under the impression that Fulcrum was presented as a long-time contact of Hera's.

My 5-year old has really been enjoying these episodes more and more. The yoda episode was riveting stuff for him, even if we grown ups could see what was going on immediately. Seeing Lando blew him away, too. (Ask him who Lando is and he'll tell you he blew up Death Star II. )

I like it so far...fun throwaway stuff.

The Original Trilogy / Re: Fan Edit Ep IV - A Must See

Anyone have a copy of this on DVDs they could get me a copy?

Second that. I was looking a few months back to download this finally and can only find dead links. Any help would be appreciated.

Vintage Kenner / Re: History of vinyl cape Jawa
« on: July 30, 2014, 02:12 PM »
This is just an anecdotal story, so take it as that.

I was a little kid getting Star Wars toys in '78, and I remember the Jawa being the last one we found. It was months after the rest, and it was the cloth cape version. The few people I knew who had complete sets also had cloth capes. I had only seen vinyl caped Jawas in Kenner pictures and the Woman's Day space station pictures. I knew it was rare as a kid collecting and figured I would never see it.

It was already a legend in the 80's. They were expensive on the secondary market from the beginning, and they are one of the few that have just kept going higher. I think the only chance a collector had of getting it cheap was finding that first release at retail in '78 or finding a seller early on who didn't realize what they had, like at a flea market or a garage sale.

Joe Defender / Re: Gentle Giant Jumbo Joes
« on: July 29, 2014, 10:12 PM »
Yeah, then I think you get it.   ;D

The thing that really caught me by surprise with these was how crisp the sculpt turns out. I mean, Dengar is kind of always a turd any way you slice him, but the cool looking guys gain a little edge and depth at the jumbo size.

I played with these guys as a kid and got Fett as the mail away before ESB, so there's some kind of tactile memory going on there for sure. But it has convinced me I want some of the ROTJ figures in this format, as those are the ones I have the most fondness for.

I am guessing you haven't seen these in person?  I didn't get it either until I saw a Jumbo Boba Fett in person. I loved that toy as a kid, but this felt like more than just a large version of that. It is a thing of beauty, a piece of art you can appreciate separate from the original. I imagine if you have strong memories of playing with the original Joes, then one of these would give you the same feeling.

The Black Series 3.75" Figures / Re: San Diego Comic Con 2014
« on: July 26, 2014, 06:26 PM »
Comic-Con impressions:

Unimpressed by the 3 3/4" TBS offerings...I need new characters that aren't clone repaints to get me interested. I might pick up the Ceremonial Leia somewhere down the road but beyond that, nope.

6" TBS is still not tempting me. Shadow stuff before C3PO is not a good indicator of a line they are trying to hit all the key notes on.

Happy with the Rebels stuff. Looks like a good kids' line, with vehicles and everything going for it. I hope they (and the show) do well. Especially liked the handling of the female/potential pegwarmer characters: put 'em in a two pack with a trooper and hopefully the two together will make the purchase happen. This almost feels like Hasbro is really trying for a change. I like the Troop Transport...I had one as a kid and this looks like a good update. The icing on the cake would have been a brainwashing unit, but its absence is understandable.

Regular Legends/Mission stuff was kind of boring. Bossk and IG-88 are great figure choices, but underwhelming after so many years...Wicket and Scout Trooper will be coming home with me, though, that Wicket is fantastic. The only star for Legends was the Temple Guard--I don't want it, but it looks so good I might buy it when I see it.

Gentle Giant / Re: Jumbo Jabba
« on: July 26, 2014, 06:06 PM »
Yes, I didn't think this would happen either. I was unimpressed with the Jumbo concept when it was announced, saw some in person and "got it," and I'm now waiting for a few key figures to pick up once they are made. Now I feel like a Jumbo Rebo Band is actually gonna happen, too. That is really cool, and something I would be willing to buy.

Forget the Jumbo Rancor, the next "impossible" benchmark that I would love to see them tackle--Jumbo Death Star Playset!

Who ever asked for a new Chewbacca?  (Looks around)

I keep asking for a ESB Chewbacca with Threepio sculpted to his back...but yeah, this ain't that.

Did we ever get a toy that looked like that?

Action Fleet Alpha Series.

Star Wars Rebels / Re: Star Wars Hero Series Millennium Falcon
« on: July 17, 2014, 10:03 AM »
Well that is a surprise. My 4 year old son couldn't have cared less about the big Vader when we saw him in stores. Certainly sounds like your son is enjoying it, though. I don't mind being wrong if somebody's having fun.

And on topic, you find the $60 price tag of the new MF reasonable?  I'm still not sold. Granted, I fully expect to hear all the grumbling next year when the BMF returns for the movie at $300. I feel like $40 has always been the ceiling price for a value toy. At $60, parents are usually expecting something in the deluxe range.

Star Wars Rebels / Re: Star Wars Hero Series Millennium Falcon
« on: July 16, 2014, 10:41 PM »
Yeah, I sure didn't get the Jakks Pacific giant Vader either. Something a clueless Aunt would buy a kid to try to impress, but not a toy to be played with at the end of the day. But at least it is a perceived value...and the "shampoo bottle" figures fill the large cheap niche even better, and are manageable enough in size.

The point about future releases makes sense. Gotta go with the product with legs.

I certainly remember zooming around simple rotocast non-figure spaceships of about a foot or less as a kid so I get that side of the play pattern. The scale and price just seem way out of reason for what it wants be.

Maybe it's just me, but sixty bucks still isn't cheap.  Had they cut the size in half and charged thirty, then I might see it as a kid-friendly version of the BMF. Especially because then a kid might be able to, you know,  play with it.

It just seems like the approach is so scattershot lately...if they wanted a big ship for the kids, why not make a hollow non-figure-compatible Ghost and capitalize on Rebels? Is there any way this Falcon uses the mold from the BMF to reduce costs? Being hollow with no opening parts, I just don't see how...

I just don't get it.  ???
