Kenner Retro Collection / Re: 3rd Party Kenner Retro-Style Toys

Good grief.  I live in Chicago... can I just go pick it up?

I'm sure they wouldn't allow that, it would spoil the mystery. This is definitely a sausage where you don't want to see how/where it was made.

Their factory talk is a smokescreen. They have someone in the Chicago area handmaking them, it was said they can produce 10-20 a week. They then get shipped to Georgia, where the sculptor/project manager ships them out to customers. At least that was the official line in May.

I would say the output from their "factory" must have decreased greatly in the last 3 months for them to still not have gotten around to yours. But also you can't trust anything they say, so the surprisingly low 10-20 units they claimed was probably just as much an exaggeration as is the status of their toy factory.

It's just sad at this point.

I think that looks like a pretty solid set. I will take them as Disnet Droids over TVC if it means removable limbs (especially the Probe Droid) and the ability to get them all in one fell swoop.

Oh no, the Retro tag was way up at the top right of the planogram set and said $11.99, of course. >:D

This morning I saw 3 pegs at Target...

TVC Figures = $12.99
Koska Reeves = $13.99
Migs Mayfield = $14.99

And there was a mix of "Obi Wan Kenobi" show figures, Migs, and Koska spread out over all 3.

Uh oh.  I did email him asking for an update not knowing this.  I also did mention TFSB, but only in the context that I was asking him when he might be taking more Bantha preorders because I still haven’t gotten mine from them.

Lol. No wonder you didn't get a response!

It's a long convoluted story, but he initiated the TFSB Bantha before selling Smith Lord Creations to them and subsequently coming back to start Stan Solo. TFSB saw this as unfair competition and tried to get him shut down at the China factories for being unlicensed product. That ultimately screwed them all over because the legal attention caused the factories they were both working with to either quit or charge more for the hassle.

Now any adversity at Stan Solo is blamed squarely on TFSB. On his Facebook he literally names and shames anyone in the group who leaves feedback at TFSB, then bans them as a customer.

He hasn't started shipping them to anybody yet. They are in production now, and I've seen the boxes completed now as well. They are on track as far as Chris's expectations and are projected to be about 6 weeks from shipping.

I think the Etsy shipping dates were just as far out as he was allowed to go on Etsy, even if they weren't realistic dates for his timeline.

He set up his own web page to sell on since listing the Speeder, after what he described as many headaches about the structure he was trying to work in on Etsy.

He has a really short temper and is really peeved when people ask about shipping, etc. He loses all control if you offer constructive criticism. If you mention Fans Strike Back you are forbidden to buy anything from Stan Solo anymore. It's basically the Soup Nazi episode from Seinfeld.

It’s less the figures than the accessories.  There are so many fakes now that the real ones have big value.  There are finished eBay auctions for the black A-Wing pilot’s blaster that are finishing at $300 to $350.  Regular common ones that are authentic are getting $25… $35… even more.

It’s bananas.

Oh the accessories, yes. Last year I needed a Bespin Gown Leia to do a photo shoot of the Dining Room Playset I built, and the same store wanted $80 for the loose complete figure (I needed a nice cape, could've cared less about the gun) they had in stock. When I choked on that, they explained it was $65 for the gun alone, and they wouldn't break up the set.

I definitely think this is aimed more at carded collectors than loose collectors.  They really haven't hit of those really HTF vintage figures yet.

You're definitely right in that assessment. These releases are aimed at carded collectors first and foremost. I have 5% or so of my collection on card, and that is mostly because of lack of inertia when I got the figure, so I tend to lose sight of the carded collector.

Not many nice Kenner era figures can be had for $15 these days.

I must be blessed, there is a vintage toy store near me that has an 4-foot tall R2-D2 cooler full of loose Star Wars figures for sale that I regularly dig through. Lots of modern, but lots of vintage too. Last year I wanted to get the Kenner bounty hunters again so I dug through and scored 4 of 6 all looking really good. I have always had really good luck there, and have rarely needed to look elsewhere when I get an itch for a specific loose Kenner figure.

I think Retro is sort of fun at $10 or less, but pretty stupid at prices much above that.

I would much, much rather have all new 5POA figures with full paint applications and modern style sculpts than Retro figures.  I'd even be willing to pay somewhat more for new 5POA figures ($13?) than Retro figures.  There are so many 5POA from Mando, Solo, etc. that I'd love to see made before more Retro figures, new or old.

Agreed 100%...remakes of the Kenner figures at prices close to what loose real Kenner figures sell for are nuts.

I miss the modern 5POAs as well...Hasbro botched assortments there for a few years, and retail lost confidence in them, but I sure wish Hasbro could figure out a way to give us a "background weirdo" line in some capacity...it's what made Star Wars figures great back in the day.

There’s no excuse.  It’s highway robbery for retro to cost the same thing as TVC.  Hell, that’s actually almost a dollar more each than the three super-articulated TVC preorders yesterday.

It's Super7 pricing without the Super7 quirky lineup. I would much rather pay premium for unrealized Kenner OT figures than a Death Squad Commando they can't sell in a store because of the name pill.

Artoo and Threepio could be released in huge numbers in 2-packs or whatever to pay for those molds. And then Hasbro could turn around and make any number of other droids off the molds (see Stan Solo.)

Jawas and Sand People in 2-packs/Mandalorian cards would also be easy sales.

There is no reason for these figures to not have a plan in place to amortize the molds.

The Vintage Collection / Re: 2022 TVC Boba Fett's Starship

But, damn, extra points to the person who posed and photographed Fett.

That would be Matthew Cohen, an amateur toy photographer who has gone by ShootingTheGalaxy over on Instagram for years (he and I had a deal where we would trade Cardboard Galaxy displays for his awesome promo photos of said pieces.)

Hasbro hired him earlier this year, and his stuff has been all over Pulse lately. I am super proud of him, and he would be appreciative of the notice.

I saw a Mandalorian Ahsoka, Tech, and the Client at Wal*Mart today. Hadn't seen any non-Lando figures at a store in quite a while.

225
The problem is that at about $28 for a two pack, these bare bones Retro figures cost almost as much as a new TVC figure… only about $6 less than a Dark Trooper now…

But they're in a special two-pack Rob.

A special two-pack.

And not for nothing, its a PFP special two-pack.
