Watto's Junk Yard / Re: How's the weather?
« on: January 21, 2007, 02:38 PM »
You know, I find myself saying this each and every year, but your wintery weather is more than welcomed here.

We ran the chance of having an ice storm in Northwestern SC today, however the artic high pressure system in New England failed to dam any of the truely cold air far south enough for us to get anything other than cold rain. Ah well, I suppose our light icing from last Thursday will have to suffice for now. At least that caused school to have a 2 hour delay.

Current conditions, as reported by the GSP WFO: 39°F (4°C), Light Rain with winds from the NE at 9 MPH.

It wasn't all too long ago that I popped the old Jolson 45's onto the Victrola for spin. Rather enjoyable. Currently listening to "Rosenstolz: Kassengift (2000)".

Off to Chicago bei interstate this evening, should prove to be wonderful weather for the return trip come Monday. An ice storm is predicted to effect areas along the route home, though hopefully accumulations will be light to negligable.

In Chicago, the temps are going to be fairly extreme, at least to my Carolinian sensibilities. Nights in the low 20s? Burr.

It is 65 and very muggy here in the Piedmont of NC.  We've had thunderstorms on and off all day and are currently under a tornado watch.  Its expected to be sunny and 71 tomorrow.  I have a feeling we are going to pay for this in late February/early March with sleet/ice/snow mixes.

Yeah, we actually had 2 Tornados touchdown here in the Upstate of SC. That line should be getting right into your area now, actually. One of the tornados hit a few miles from here right as school let out; the rotating portion of the storm was infact visible south of the city, too. The Wall Cloud skirted past the location I was viewing it from by less than a mile. Really awesome, but really freaky. Too bad I didn't have my camera on hand.

About 50 miles from here, however, a possible tornado struck Liberty Elementary school (Liberty, for those unfamiliar with my area, is about 20 miles to the west of Greenville). 4 people were injured and 9 cars were piled on top of each other. Thankfully, the students were kept safe.

Freaky weather, to be quite honest. We just had a tornado on New Year's Eve, which is suprising, as SC only averages about 12-14 tornados per year. Needless to say, I'm more than ready for Winter to return.

However, to do so today without making proper mention of the current plight some of our newer members seem to be having would be both hypocritical and unbecoming, so.

 :P

(Bei Got, I need some sleep.)

Please cite me a few examples, here or via PM.

Tracy hit it on the head, Chris. That some of our newer members seem to be having problems with grammar, punctuation, and just English in general; all I was saying.

There once was a time when I would have lampooned the RS membership for their lax standards of language. However, to do so today without making proper mention of the current plight some of our newer members seem to be having would be both hypocritical and unbecoming, so.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Post Your Christmas Hauls 2006!
« on: December 26, 2006, 12:29 AM »
Seeing as how I knocked out the majority of the my wants on my birthday this past November, I pulled a rather humble haul this year ...

Gift Cards (about $150 worth, combined)
Cash (about $150, combined)
Clothes (pants, house slippers, leather gloves, civilian Ushanka)
Assorted Trinkets (Coin counter, fan-pen-light-thingy)
Militaria (1980s USMC Overcoat, 1983(?) USAF Field Jacket, USMC Officer's Jacket, USMC Dress Jacket ... all of these from a retired Colonel with whom my mother shares a correspondence)
Music (Rosenstolz: Kassengift, Rosenstolz: Objekt der Begierde, Paris Combo)

Forthcoming...

New headphones, will probably be Sony.
Automobile, will probably be a Volvo S40.

Nice customs, Adam. As per the issue of naming the Sith/baddie, "Anec Donaex" ... "Darth Schrei" ... "Darth Niedersaag" ... "Yvhan Muskovviyte" ... "Mameleuk Abband" ... "Zoerros Turren" ... "Michael Crichton".

30th Anniversary Collection / Re: army building question
« on: December 10, 2006, 04:25 PM »
The lack of definitive figures for non-Republic/Imperial troops has forced me into the elastic set-up I've had for the past few years now.

Clone Wars era:

While ideally I would prefer to have more Confederate Forces than Republic, the lack of suitable droid army builders has forced me to take a creative and pragmatic approach to my Clone Wars era armies. I have 150 or so Republican troops, with most of those being Episode III clones (it's a 60/40 split). I have 40 or so 'solid' Confederate troops, with 50 or so non-affiliated/militia type guys that I also use to suppliment my Rebel forces or OT dioramas or what have you.

Galactic Civil War era:

I have a disproportionally large Imperial force. 200 or so figures, several AT-ATs, etc. I'm fairly certain that it's supposed to be that way for the majority of the OT, so it makes sense. I have approx. 90 'solid' Rebel figures, with the aforementioned non-affiliated/militia folks acting as back-up where needed.

Personally, I think this arrangement works. I'm not that big of an Army Builder anymore ... the majority of my forces were amassed between 2002 and 2005. I've stopped Army Building with ships wholesale, however. 3 Y-Wings, 3 A-Wings, 2 B-Wings, 5 TIE Fighters, 3 TIE Interceptors, 3 TIE Bombers, etc... I guess since I really no longer play with my stuff it's not worth the money to buy all of them.

Army Building is, however, very fun and very enjoyable. I would encourage anyone able to partake in the practice to do so, as it is Star Wars afterall.

Carolina versus Florida Atlantic, 45-6 Carolina
Carolina versus Auburn, 24-17 Auburn
Carolina versus Kentucky, 24-17 Carolina
Carolina versus Vanderbilt, 31-13 Carolina
Carolina versus Tennessee, 31-24 Tennessee
Carolina versus Arkansas, 26-20 Arkansas
Carolina versus Florida, 17-16 Florida
Carolina versus Middle Tennessee, 52-7 Carolina
Carolina versus Clemson, 31-28 Carolina

Hope you guys had a good one this year with lots 'o SW loot...

Actually, for the first time in 10 years, I didn't get any Star Wars stuff. There was simply nothing immediately available on the market that tickled my fancy. I did get the following, however;

DVDs:
Eisenstein 'The Sound Years' boxset...Ivan the Terrible I, II; Alexander Nevsky
Le Grande Illusion
Metropolis (1927)
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)
Mars Attacks! (1996)

Otros:
RCA Lawton 'Victrola' Turntable...I've always been terribly fond of the old 'Victor Victrola' style phonograms, so a few months ago when I happened upon what amounted to a modernized version of them by RCA, I knew I had to have it. Got it for a steal, too, as the original MSRP was $399.

Thanks, ya'll. T'was a pretty swift birthday this year.
