I am working on a side project (more info coming soon - it is very cool) and wondered who everyone thought were the best customizers out there working on figures today.

I am looking for various skills sets and abiliities from overall quality, to sculpting, molds, painting etc.

Thanks

A friend of mine got a 30,000$ laser cutting machine.  He is making some amazing diorama accessories.  There is only going to be a few things a month then they will be retired for a while.   There is only going to be a few things each month and at the end of the month the item will be retired (we will surely revisit them in later months)  Other items are coming.

Last month he sold the cryofloor and stairs.

To help this thing be more organized there is now a website with a shopping cart system that links to paypal. It can be seen here.

LASERAMA web page

The pieces are:

SKY CITY WINDOW  sold both in a deluxe frame with removable windows (also available with just the windows)

SPACE FREIGHTER FLOOR PANELS  and access hatch.

You can also buy single grates to fill out the dio.  It is about 3" long.

Hey all.

I just posted my new line that continues my lines of isolating and emphasizing the elements of Star Wars into a singular coehisive theme. This time it is the Medieval fantasy aspects of Star Wars.

Individual shots and descriptions are on my site www.sillof.com - I really like the descriptions and explanations

Yeah, I know about Ned Kelly he was the basis for my wild west iron man.

Here is my new line of figures called West Wars.   West Wars is a line of custom figures that continues my experiment of breaking down Star Wars many elements and emphasizing them individually.  The original trilogy, especially A New Hope, were influenced by westerns.  The dusty small frontier towns, the seedy cantina, the quick draw shootouts, etc.   This line is intended to be fully western with no other elements.  For further authenticity all the names are actual combinations of historical lawmen and outlaws of the American West.  This line has been in the works for quite some time.  Many of the figures were started after the Steam Wars line and before the Samurai & WWII lines were even begun.

"Rusty" Ransen D. Dalton
Rusty is a cantankerous town black smith.  He is quite handy with tools and should not be underestimated for his smaller stature.

In the original films the film is seen from the perspective of 2 common workers, an idea Lucas borrowed from a Kurosawa film.  I kept that idea in this line and translated the common workers into wild west equivalents.  Rusty is the town blacksmith.  He is short, with a smooth head, one eye, and lots of tools.

Clarence Peppero
Clarence Pepper is the talkative bartender at the town bar.  He is a bit of a worrier who dislikes being in the violent establishment.  He is quick to duck for cover behind the bar.

To continue the idea of the droids being the town commoners I made 3PO the town bartender.  I thought the idea of the guy who is always talking to people being the translator droid.   I went for a yellow/golden color scheme.  The eye glasses are supposed to be like his round eyes and the belt & buckle suggestive of the gold disk and black mid section.

Leah Orango

Leah is the daughter of one of the most prominent ranch families in the territory and one of the few families to hold off Sheriff Vardas' aggressive attempt to steal the ranch.

I went with a whitish color scheme and a long gun to suggest Leia's gown and blaster.

Sheriff Akan "Death" Vardas
Now the sheriff of the border town he works for the corrupt robber barons and railroad tycoons of the territory.

The duster is like Vader's robes and cape.  He wears the typical "black hat" of the bad guy.  The mask has a design that hints at the breathing mask of the old Vader.

Sheriff's Henchmen / Deputy
The sheriff has an endless supply of hired guns, thugs, and henchman.  He deputizes all them and uses them to further his control of the territories.

I could not really use the trademark all white look of the armor so I opted for a dirty light gray.  The bandanna has a design which is meant to be suggestive of the design of the helmets.

Luke S. Walker
Luke lives on the outer borderlands with his aunt and uncle who are a poor farming family.

I went for a younger looking Luke to emphab the idea that this kid is in way over his head.  Kind of cross between True Grit and the Searchers. He has the classic white top and tan pants, just like his movie inspiration.

"Old" Bennet Kennelly

I saw him as a one time sheriff of some western border town who was driven in hiding when his former deputy turned on him and took over the territory.

I kept the brown and tan color scheme.  The duster is supposed to be like his jedi robes.  The gray hat is like Ben's hair.  He had to have some six shooters but he also needed a sword to be Obi Wan.  I settled on a Cavalry looking sword.

Hank "Solo" Solomon
Han was always the most directly western inspired character.  I just fully westernized his appearance.  He quintessential quick draw bandit.

He is the most obvious transition.  He required very little reworking. I kept the color scheme, the quick draw holster, riding boots and added the black hat for his moral ambiguity.

Chewing Bear
Chewing Bear is the loyal companion of Hank Solomon.  Solomon aided Chewing Bear's tribe when  Sheriff Vardas try to massacre the Indian tribe.

I did not want to have and robots or creatures in the line. I wanted a pure western feeling.  But, I still wanted to make him not just a normal cowboy.  I also liked the idea of including a Native American.  The bear pelt is obviously supposed to be suggestive of Chewbacca's furry & animalistic qualities.  The satchel is like the bandolier.  He is meant to be like an intimidating Tanto.

Bob A. Ford
The typical wild west bounty hunter who sells his services to bring in anyone with a price on their head.   His quiet demeanor and lighting reflexes makes him one of the most dangerous men on the prarie.
I was going for a kind of Clint Eastwood feel.  Much of Ralph McQuarrie's concept art had Fett wearing his cape like a wild west poncho from The Man With No Name trilogy.  All the elements are here.  The color scheme, the poncho, the wrist gauntlets, the weapons.  I did not want to include armor as the line is intended to be fully western with no fantasy elements.

I don't know if I ever posted these.   Basically inspired by the fact that Lucas was inspired by Kurosawa.

Individual shots and descriptions can be found on my site  www.Sillof.com

Star Wars: 1942 is a line of 6” custom figures that puts Star Wars right in the middle of WWII.  The line emphasizes the WWII elements of Star Wars and has the rebels as the side of the Allied powers and the Empire as the side of the Axis powers

It is a follow up to the line I did with another customizer, Glorbes, back in 2008.  I loved Glorbes work but it bothered me only having half a set of figures.  My troopers needed a Darth Vader and I always need another Boba Fett

Battle Droid Mk. C3  (C-3PO)

As an early automated automaton designed as a smaller tank operated on radio command signals for more close quarter combat then a Sherman tank can offer. He features a desert tan color scheme and replacement leg in battleship gray and features a machine gun arm.

The color of the figure is reminiscent of C-3PO's color scheme, the abdominal wheel is similar to his disc design, and the overall thin frame is like that of his cinematic inspiration.

  Battle Droid Mk. D2  (R2-D2)

Designed as a smaller manned tank, the Mk. D2 can be piloted by a smaller framed driver. His is more of a utility model then a combat weapon. The driver can access the vehicle from an access hatch located on the top of the unit. He offers assistance in the form of tools, fuel, and war supplies.

The model comes in a battleship gray which is meant to be a combination of R2's classic white, blue, and silver color scheme. The figure also has 2 sets of tank treads like the classic 2 legged droid, the various metal plates are evocative of R2's numerous doors and the single cannon is meant to represent R2's single eye.

General Ben Kenworthy  (Obi-Wan Kenobi)

A battle tested soldier and seasoned veteran of WWI. The General is called back up to active duty to oversea a dangerous rescue mission with ties from his past.

Designed to evoke a kind of General Patton feel, Kenworthy is wearing combat fatigues and boots, along with a leather bomber jacket and field helmet.

Imperial Stormtrooper (Stormtrooper)

The backbone of the secret order of the SS, the Todesstern, was the Sturmsoldat, or Stormtrooper.

The figure comes in gray fatigues (the white just did not seem logical in wartime) and the standard MP40 submachine gun and a grenade canister on his back where the stormtroopers wore thermal detonators.

Reichsführer Vater (Darth Vader)

Reichsführer of a Einsatzgruppen, or special task force, known as the Todesstern, he was tasked with the most high level and important missions.

Vater, is German for father, just as Vader is Dutch for father, a slight nod possibly to his later explained lineage. He comes donned in traditional black leather, with a very sinister gas mask, and the famous German flared helmet. This img was inspired by Glorbes drawings with slight modifications by Sillof. The figure now evokes a more menacing, hulking frame that hunches over slightly.

Bodo Vett  (Boba Fett)

Bodo Vett was an SS Sonderkommandos, elite secret troops, whose existence was so secret other high ranking members had no knowledge of their existence.

Bodo still has that classic gray and green color scheme. The shovel is meant to evoke the profile of the rocket pack. His gauntlet weapons are now a knife and flashlight. The gun is similar in design to Fett's movie blaster. The armor is based off of actual photos of real WWII combat armor. The helmet is an original design that incorporates the flared look of the other helmets with Fett's classic "T" visor.

Here is Series 1 & 2 together

I have just posted the 1st part of a huge project. It is basically a a shot for shot remake of STAR WARS that I made to showcases my custom figures and dioramas.

It basically uses some stop motion, simple puppeteering, and my first attempt at "special" effects (which was whatever the editing software came with)

I only used 3 3/4" and smaller figures to keep it from getting out of control with 12", busts, statues, and lifesize props.

I made something like this when I was a kid, and again 10 years ago after I saw Alex Newborn's "Whoever dies with the most toys wins" at his house.

I plan on releasing new parts every couple of weeks.

I used a simple Canon Digic DV camera and Pinnacle Studio for editing.

Star Wars Action Figures / New 6" McQuarrie Customs
« on: April 7, 2010, 09:57 AM »
My site has been up for 10 years now.  You may have seen my Steampunk Star Wars and 1942 Star Wars lines.  As a bit of an anniversary event I decided to revisit my first set of 6" customs from 10 years ago...The Ralph McQuarrie concepts.

Now I know that most every company has done something with the McQuarrie designs since but I wanted to revisit the set as they hold a special place in my heart and as a curiosity to see how my skills have improved.

I took some liberties with the designs and in some cases infused multiple designs into a new creation.
