Watto's Junk Yard / Bonnaroo. Anyone going?
« on: January 28, 2005, 09:54 PM »
2005 Bonnaroo Festival

Tickets go on sale tomorrow. I went two years ago, and got so ****** up I can barely remember it.

Great bands are playing. I might cough up the $150 if Ben Harper plays the festival, but I think I'd pay that just to see Jack Johnson and Modest Mouse.

Anyone else been there/going this year?

Watto's Junk Yard / Roommates suck.
« on: January 28, 2005, 03:50 AM »
I decided to do dishes tonight instead of tomorrow morning. I'm going about the routine when I get to the pan that's been sitting on the stove for a day. Granted, I shouldn't have left it there, but I've been lazy.
So I open the lid, and this overpowering stench of rotten food nearly makes me toss my cookies. I don't know what the hell my idiot roommate was cooking, but it's rotten and cooked to the bottom of my ******* pan that I paid good money for.  >:( KILL!

So now the pan is sitting in my sink soaking while I have three scented candles going trying to clear up the stench. And my dumb bitch roommate is going to get the bitch session of a lifetime when I see her next. >:(

How about you? Can you top my horror story of stupid-ass roommates?

Urbex

This kinda looks like fun. There's quite a few  run-down, yet ornate old houses and buildings around here I'd like to tour.

I get a sort of creeped-out feeling looking at all these old hospitals and asylums. Add to it that these in the link are all from Great Britain, and that creepiness just grows. Not due to the people, but mostly from the Victorian era and its attitudes and architecture.

I don't think this is totally Victorian, but...

The IMDB reports that Gary Oldman has pulled out of the next "Star Wars" movie because he refuses to work overseas illegally.

The "Harry Potter" star had agreed to voice the evil CG robot Jedi knight killer General Grievous in the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith", but recently quit the production because it was made outside the Screen Actor's Guild rules.

Oldman's spokesman explained - "Gary was excited and looking forward to working on the film. The snag is that the movie is being made without members of the Screen Actor's Guild. It means Gary would have been working illegally overseas. Out of respect and solidarity with the other members, he could not and would not consider violating the rules of his union".

No word as yet on a potential replacement.

------------------
I'm thinking the voice work would already be done, or maybe that they'd do the voice at Skywalker Ranch or something.

Unless, of course, Oldman is not a US citizen and can't work after all.

Watto's Junk Yard / I just got a stack of old Marvels...
« on: August 17, 2004, 10:21 PM »
A friend of mine just dropped off a bunch of comics here. I'm pretty stoked about it, even though none of them are really worth anything and they smell like a musty basement, plus they haven't been stored with backer boards.

There's a 1994 reprint of X-Men #1 from 1963.
Jim Lee's X-Men #1 from 1991, which I already have two copies of, but, eh.
Uncanny X-Men Annual #17
Uncanny X-Men #'s 173 (old!), 329
The Adventures of Superman #500, that whole Back From the Dead thing
X-Factor #'s 72, 74

Now, for the really weird stuff that knocked my socks off.
RoboCop #'s 4, 5. Didn't even know Marvel printed it.
Positively ancient (they're from 1977, so they're older than me ;)) Marvel Godzilla comics. #'s 2, 6, 10, 12, 13
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III movie adaptation

My favorite part, though, is Bucky O'Hare #1 from 1991. Wild, wild stuff, man. Larry Hama wrote it.

Anyone else ever have any finds like this?

Monkey starts walking like a human

From http://www.ananova.com

A monkey at an Israeli zoo started walking like a human after recovering from a serious illness.

Natasha, a five-year-old macaque at the Safari Park, near Tel Aviv, now walks exclusively on her hind legs.

She almost died of a severe stomach flu but suddenly stabilised and was released from the zoo's clinic.

Workers at the zoo say that's when she started walking upright exclusively, reports CBC News.

Monkeys usually alternate between upright walking and moving on all fours.

A zoo veterinarian says he's not sure why she has altered her behaviour but says the illness could have caused brain damage.

Other than walking upright, the vet says Natasha's behaviour has returned to normal.

Weird, huh? I find it odd that brain damage caused this.

Though, I guess, it's not the first time it's happened...

The Original Trilogy / Star Wars OT VCD
« on: July 6, 2004, 10:18 PM »
I found this auction on ebay. The seller's description seems to indicate it's the original version of the OT, but the packaging art tells me otherwise.

So I ask you folks here: Is it the original version, or the Special Edition?

Thanks,
Ben

Original Trilogy Collection / Anybody find OTC at retail yet?
« on: June 12, 2004, 09:55 PM »
I just read a report on RS in the Area Reports section that stated someone found some OTC at a Des Moines, IA Target.

This is the first I've heard of this. Anyone else finding these yet?

http://www.bigbadtoystore.com has the X-WIng and TIE in stock right now, so it's not impossible the figures are available at retail.

Edit: OK, the ships are now out of stock, but they do have Tanus for $11.99. :P

Now that's a valkyrie.

Too bad Toddy went back to their old ways of minimal articulation. (As if they ever left.)

But, they're pretty cool anyway.

Watto's Junk Yard / WIN THIS BABY!!!!!

April 28, 2004 -- A giant-sized controversy is brewing over a baby adoption special on "20/20" - and sending ABC execs into a tailspin. Millions of viewers across the country watched in surprise over the weekend as the network aired a sensational promo for Friday's segment, which pits five desperate couples against each other for the privilege of adopting a 16-year-old's baby.
A very personal, intimate process was made to look like a reality-show contest, with prospective parents dubbed "winners" and "losers."

Yesterday, complaints flooded into radio stations, Web sites and even the FCC - many of them noting that host Barbara Walters is not only a respected journalist, but also an adoptive mother.

"I've already sent my outrage to [the producer of "20/20"] making a reality show out of something so personal," wrote one user on the Web site eeadopt.com.

"While I haven't seen the show, it definitely sounds like the marketing department at ABC was attempting to add a reality TV spin, which is definitely an all-time low - especially when children are at stake," says radio journalist Jane Braverman, who's adopting a child.

"My friend's teenage son, who was passing through the living room when the promotion was airing, even found it offensive. He said, 'How could a child be a prize in a reality show?'"

The program, titled "Be My Baby," set to air Friday during May sweeps, follows five couples through open adoption, which means the adoptive parents and birth mother are in contact, identities are disclosed and there is the potential for contact in the future.

The birth mother, 16-year-old Jessica, is shown in interviews with the prospective parents and in childbirth.

Jennifer Marando, co-director of A Child's Waiting adoption agency in Akron, Ohio, which participated in the show, says she and her sister and co-director, Crissy Kolarik, were completely disheartened by the teasers.

"We didn't go into this to outrage anyone," she says.

"We chose to participate in order to educate people on open adoption. But it's not an educational piece at this point - it's an entertainment piece made into a reality-show theme."

Marando confirms A Child's Waiting has received a number of complaints from distressed viewers.

For its part, ABC said it intended "Be My Baby" to be a realistic look at open adoption in America.

Amid the fury, ABC has since yanked the promo and replaced it with a toned-down version that presents the program less as a reality show and more as a documentary.

Jeffrey Schneider, head of ABC publicity, blamed the controversy on the misleading promotional spots.

"Clearly, the first promo that ran was leaving people with the wrong impression of what this hour is all about," said Schneider.

"It is a thoughtful report on the process of open adoption that we think will be of interest to the American people. We simply wanted to make sure that people understood what we would be broadcasting."

Marando hopes the positive aspects of her agency's work don't get lost amid the uproar.

"The producers shot a follow-up at the baptism," she said, "then again six months later to show that open adoption can be successful."

----

I can't believe it. Now we're auctioning human life on TV.
What will they do for next year's May sweeps? Executions?

Blech.

Watto's Junk Yard / Scold your younger self
« on: April 16, 2004, 11:02 PM »
10 year old Ben:
stick with baseball. Otherwise you'll be a fatass in 13 years and the girls will not like you.

high school Ben:
Just ask her out. You'll hate yourself for a long time if you don't, and believe me, that's pain you don't want.

early college Ben:
Don't schedule classes at 8 am. There is a reason 11 am classes are offered. For lazy bastards like you. Don't start drinking either. Bad.

circa April 2002 Ben:
Think of a better screen name than HMI. Seriously, it's terrible. And don't even think about collecting MOTU, GI Joe, or Transformers. The companies will completely screw those licenses, so save yourself the headache.

I figure with all the attention that is given to the tenth anniversary of Cobain's death, this one deserves some attention too, because it started at the same time.

800,000 people were killed in Rwanda in the span of 100 days. Damn near one million. And it happened only ten years ago.
