Watto's Junk Yard / The rebirth of Rock?
« on: April 15, 2008, 01:56 AM »
I've posted a few times lamenting the dearth of even passable rock music on the radio the past few years.  Over the course of the last month or so, I've seen some signs of hope!  Three bands have really struck a chord me:

Airbourne - I've heard one of their songs a few times, "Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast."  The first thing I thought was "This sounds like old AC DC."  Even the way the guitars are configured.  The lead sounds like Angus Young's lead.  The rhythm guitar sounds like AC DC's rhythm guitar.  But it's good.

EndeverafteR - I heard "I Wanna Be Your Man" and was just blown away.  Yeah, the lyrics are caveman stupid, and the thing is totally derivative, but it just totally rocks!  It's just fun, hard, bluesy, funky fun.  And the video of "Baby, Baby, Baby" has hot chicks in schoolgirl outfits making out (there's even an uncensored cut on NGTV)... better than all the whining that's been passed off as rock of late.  What impresses me most is the guitar work... really just amazing, skilled stuff.   ;D

Black Tide - I heard them for the first time driving home this morning, and color me impressed.  Haven't really had the chance to look up much yet.  But very promising.

So is rock about to rock again?

Watto's Junk Yard / Is Rock & Roll dead?
« on: August 23, 2006, 09:12 PM »
I recently got a new car that has a CD player in it.   ;D  My '94 Grand Prix had a tape player, but I usually just ended up listening to broadcast radio in it.  Having 6 CDs to flip through is a real treat.

I've been listening to GnR's Use Your Illusion CD quite a bit, and I'm just more and more impressed by the quality of the music.  I'm at the point when I switch on the Rock station I just can't stomach it.  It's all so bland.  Raspy, nondescript vocals.  Dull, uninspired lyrics... mostly bitching and moaning.  Muddled power-chords instead of melodies.  Do bands even have a lead guitarist anymore?

These days I end up listening to Rap on the radio, because at least Rap has creative lyrics and beats.  The only Rock CDs I've purchased in the past two years were Green Day and Velvet Revolver... both of which are awesome but both by guys that have been around since before I went to college.

I just can't name a good rock band that came out after 2000.  There have been a few catchy singles that I've enjoyed, but all from one-hit wonders.

The thing is... I don't want to sound like an old guy saying "Back in my day music was so much better... now it's crap."  At least not without the evidence to back it up.  I'm not that old yet.  So are there good bands these days that I'm just missing?  Listening to old GnR, I'm just amazed at the craftsmanship of the songs.  It seems to me that the skill is just gone in modern rock.  I mean, I know the melody is gone... but maybe I just can't appreciate the craftsmanship in the new stuff due to my own personal tastes.

So what do you think?  Are there any good modern Rock bands?  Or is Rock dead?

Gentlemen, I think we have a new candidate for those "Want to get away" Southwest commercials...

I've read about traders taking down their companies before... but never by accident.  Dude needs a do-over something fierce.  It's scary to think that one guy with a computer can almost destroy an entire country's economy.

Watto's Junk Yard / What's the worst job you've ever held?
« on: August 25, 2005, 02:23 PM »
I'm sitting here at work, waiting for something to break.  Help me feel better about my lack of excitement today.  What's the worst job you've ever held?

For me, I worked for a temp agency one summer during college.  It was supposed to be pretty good money, and they were supposed to be able to find stuff for you to do pretty easily.

The first thing they signed me up for was a job processing ATF tax forms.  A company did this 24/7, in three shifts.  I was assigned the 10pm-6am shift.  This job consisted of opening envelopes, pulling out a form and usually a check, stapling them together, and sorting the forms into appropriate piles.  It was mind-numbing, and the hours didn't help.  I stuck with it for about a month before telling them to reassign me.

Hey guys!

I hate to engage in the practice of shameless self-promotion, but I'm going to be hosting one of the collecting panels at Celebration3.  I'm on the "Character Collecting" panel, which will run from 10am-11am on Saturday.  That's, of course, opposite of the later 2 Lucas talks... but if you can't make it into them this would be a great alternative activity.   ;D I'll be trying to make it into the first Lucas talk, I guess.

Anyway, it should be a good presentation.  It'd be nice to get heckled by some of the JD family.  I know some of my PSWCS buddies are planning to video tape the whole debacle.

But seriously... it'll be interesting.

I have a hard time putting into words just how please I am with the final product here.  Oola has always been a personal favorite, so it was a treat to give her the ol' Cable treatment.
