As a 40-year-old fan who grew up with the originals, I actually prefer watching the prequels - for many of the reasons listed in the article.  I love the political intrigue, the maneuvering and machinations of Palpatine, and the eventual triumph of the Sith in the third installment.  If I remember correctly, Kevin Smith expressed it succintly: watching the prequels is like watching a trainwreck.  The originals show us the crew trying to clean up the wreck and repair the track; but the prequels show us the events leading up to the wreck, and they show us the massive wreck itself.  Now, that doesn't mean that I think the prequels are better.  Not at all.  For me, the originals have a more solid and resonating feel to them; they are more "organic" than the prequels, and the characters feel a lot more "relatable" (I don't know about you, but I can relate a whole lot better to the daydreaming farmboy than I can to the monastic warrior, or to the politician.)  And there is something a little "cold" about the prequels.  Perhaps it has a lot to do with the presentation of such a clean and politically complex galaxy, seen at its apex.  And, of course, people bitch about the acting and the dialogue.  But when I watch the prequels, I don't see bad acting - I see Christensen and Portman portraying awkward characters: a repressed teenager in over his head, and a depressed politician dreaming of a simpler life - and both are romantic neophytes.  My wife hates to watch Christensen because of his acting.  But when I watch Attack of the Clones, I don't see bad acting, I see an awkward character.  To be fair, I'm not sure that that was Christensen's intention, but that's how I see it nonetheless.

So, if I get the itch to sit down and watch a Star Wars movie, invariably, my hand grabs a prequel.  As awesome and classic as the originals are, nothing gets my blood flowing like watching Anakin massacre the Separatist Council, or watching Yoda duke it out with Sidious.  It's not that I don't love the originals; it's just that I like watching the prequels more

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Clone Wars Wave 30 (2013 Wave 1)

I got Captain Rex from a Canadian seller on eBay.  $30, plus $8 shipping.  I justified the expense with the realization that I will be buying practically no Star Wars figures until sometime in the Summer/Fall.  Anyway, I really want that Rex.

I was charged and got my shipping notice from Order Sixty Six Toy Store for this wave. I got them all except Maul and Savage, which is fine since they are repacks.

Argh!  All sold out of Captain Rex.  Oh well...the search continues.

The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:11 AM »
I was reading through Adam's Q and A this week over at GH, and he mentions in there that he feels the 10+ articulation range 3 3/4" line won't make it past 2013.  Do you think there is a chance of this?

I was discussing Pawlus' column (via text) with a buddy of mine, and he said that there is always someone out there eager to predict the death of the line.  It's just too early to tell.  It's kind of premature to do the Chicken Little routine.

Although I am not overly excited about the character selection for waves one and two, there is still plenty there for me to buy.  Ever since the onset of TVC, I have been buying resculpts of main characters, because I have been seeing these figures as the definitive version of the character.  This will continue into TBS for me.  Truth is, I see TBS as a continuation of the same kind of quality and character selction that we got in the TVC line, but now it's just in a different package.  I want that new Biggs, Ceremony Luke and Padmé; and that new Anakin looks really nice (he appears to be the best AOTC Anakin to date).  More clones are always a welcome addition to my collection, so I'll gladly nab that repainted clone, and the clone pilot.  No brainers for me.  I'll pass on Mara Jade, since I don't collect figures from the comics and from the video games.  And I really wanted that Rex.

I still love what we're getting in the line now too, but can admit that the well for new characters (or even necessary resculpts) gets a little drier all the time.

True, but I can still nerd out and tick off a few from my ROTS want list: Cin Drallig, Office Duel Palpatine, MeruMeru, Wookiee Warrior, Sheltay Retrac and the Birthing Droids.   ;D

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6 Inch Figures?
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:20 AM »
I think a Tatooine/Death Star Luke could've been epic like that.

Farmboy Luke.  Now that's one I thought of, too, after I posted my previous comments.  If Hasbro wanted to go for iconic, then there is nothing more iconic than Luke in his farmboy outfit, right?

I guess it's just a reflection of how I see the saga, but when I think of Luke, I don't usually picture him in his flight suit first.  But Hasbro is fond of making Luke in that outfit; so I guess it's fitting that they went for this one. They're also quite fond of making that Sandtrooper, so I guess that's fitting, too.  They're just not my first choices; but I guess that really doesn't matter.  If the line is successful, then they'll get to my first choices eventually.   ;)

My first choice?  From the OT, I want Bespin Han.  Hands down.  When I was a kid, he was my hero; and I have always loved his Bespin look.  From the PT, I would want ROTS Anakin.

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6 Inch Figures?
« on: February 17, 2013, 11:52 AM »
When I first saw these 6" toys, I was really excited for them.  But as the weeks have passed, my enthusiasm for them has waned.  I am still a little underwhelmed with the character selection for the initial wave.  From my stump, I would say that an initial wave should really WOW the collector in terms of character selection; and I gotta say that the selection here is a little...ho hum.  Although Hasbro stated to the contrary, Pilot Luke is not what I would call iconic.  Well, in all fairness, I guess it is; but it certainly is not the first one to come to mind when I think of Luke in an "action" sequence.  If you watch the OT, all Luke ever does while wearing that suit is sit in his vehicle.  Granted, he's in a couple dogfights in A New Hope while wearing that suit, and he blows up the Death Star; but no lightsaber fights or blaster shoot-outs.  He just drives a vehicle.  If it were up to me to decide which Luke to start the line with, I would have gone with an outfit that invoked more physical action, such as his Bespin fatigues, or his black outfit in Return of the Jedi.  There, you could pose him with his lightsaber, or have him draw his blaster, and it would invoke more of what he actually looked like when he did that stuff in the movies.

And the Sandtrooper?  I know that a lot of collectors get some major wood over this character; but I only think of one thing: "Look, sir: droids!"  These are the guys who just walked around Mos Eisley looking for droids.

R2-D2 is what I would expect from an initial wave; and he's loaded to the gills with accessories.  He makes sense for an initial wave.  And the Darth Maul figure is also a good choice for an initial wave.  I just wish that the figure looked more like the character from the film.  Oh well.

Like some of you here, I might just wait to see how these sell, and perhaps pick them up on sale.

They were on last week's episode actually, pictured next to Rex, but in darkness so hard to make out the coloration.

Well, that settles that.  Thanks for the information.  I guess I'll be hunting this one down on the secondary market.

Sucks to hear that this wave will not be coming out in the U.S.  But I only wanted the 501st Trooper and the new Rex; and it looks like Rex is coming out in the Mission Series 2-pack later in the year.  So, it's not a big loss.  I may track down that 501st Trooper online - assuming I can find him in the show somewhere.  I'm not going to make the effort if his paint apps are just a Hasbro designer having fun with the design.

I am an opener, so I couldn't care less about the card design, since it all goes into the recycle bin.  The only packaging I truly disliked was Vintage, since there was never enough bubble for cool accessories, and I disliked the lack of a J-hook.  These new black cards will fit into my recycle bin just fine.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Here's Who Hasbro Missed!
« on: January 13, 2013, 07:18 AM »
I would say the best bet would be some sort of retail/con exclusive or possibly a deluxe Class I set.

They just missed a great chance at releasing him with the 501st AT-RT Class 1 Vehicle.  Instead, they went with repaints.   :'(

The two that really make me feel as though my collection is incomplete are Duchess Satine and Sugi. I think they both still have an outside shot at being made, as they continue to appear sporadically, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

With all due respect, giving them an outside chance is being exceedingly optimistic.  Back when Hasbro was still participating in the Q&As, they said repeatedly that young boys (who they identify as their primary market) do not respond well to female figures.  Only Ahsoka appeared to be the exception.  They said it enough times that I wrote off any chance of seeing Sugi and Satine made (much to my chagrin).  And now I turn my gaze to wave one of 2013, consisting of repaints and resculpts of main characters.  I can only hope that something interesting comes with subsequent waves, assuming there will be any (sorry for all the gloom and doom - this is just the view from my stump).  With Hasbro ramping everything down to allocate their resources toward the next trilogy, I really doubt we'll see much of anything coming in The Clone Wars line.

Or, ideally: "We sold that sub-line to Disney. They will have 40 new figures out in 2013 starting this spring with the Pong Krell wave..."

OMG!  I wouldn't hear a thing anyone said to me for about an hour after reading that kind of news!  To quote Tootsie: "Heaven...sheer heaven."

I would be content retiring my TCW collection, assuming Hasbro makes one more figure for collectors: Pong Krell.  Until then, I will consider my collection forever incomplete.

Droid Factory 2013 / Re: 2013 Legacy Collection Rumors
« on: December 12, 2012, 07:11 AM »
I can easily say that I would be severely disappointed if BAD gets pushed back to end of next year.  I was able to acquire most of the figures on the TVC re-release list (except for Bespin Han Solo) either through trades or by humping my retailers.  So, if there is nothing to offer in the realistic line in 2013 except for re-releases of 2012 product, then I may have absolutely nothing to collect in 2013 (because I now know not to look forward to any cool Clone Wars releases), and that will SUCK HARD!!  So, if this is indeed the way things will be going, then 2013 will be worse for me than 2012 was - and that it is hard to imagine.
