Watto's Junk Yard / Re: DVD and CD's how long will they be around?
« on: August 6, 2003, 02:17 PM »
A friend of mine and I were talking about this the other day. I think the current format will be around at least another 10 years.  After that, I dont see tape becoming  the medium.  Its quality is great, but its bulky.  Do you really want to rewind an 8 hour tape?   I saw a show on this recently and there just arent enough benefits to going to tape. Plus the quality could be affected by age, light and plain old wear and tear.  If I were to put money on a future format I would say the mini disc will make a comeback in a few years.  After they learn how to compress the format without losing any of the audio or video.  Another plus to the mini disc is that it would most likey be able to be played on current DVD players and future mini disc players may have the option of playing older DVD's.  That way we dont get stuck buying alot of our older movies over again.  Your take on downloading all of your entertainment is something I thought of as well.  But until hi-speed cable becomes more affordable, along with DVD burners and HDTV, I also see this at least 5-10 years away. Also, copyright laws could become a nightmare, as well as bootlegging.

Heres the ice fishing story, and I apologize that is was not Minnesota like I once thought:

http://www.traagstad.com/humor/isfiske.html

And here is one of my favorites:
Employees in a medium-sized warehouse in west Texas noticed the smell
of a gas leak. Sensibly, management evacuated the building,
extinguishing all potential sources of ignition lights, power, etc.
After the building had been evacuated, two technicians from the gas
company were dispatched. Upon entering the building, they found they had
difficulty navigating in the dark. To their frustration, none of the
lights worked (you can see what's coming, can't you?). Witnesses later
described the sight of one of the technicians reaching into his pocket
and retrieving an object that resembled a cigarette lighter. Upon
operation of the lighter-like object, the gas in the warehouse exploded,
sending pieces of it up to three miles away. Nothing was found of the
technicians, but the lighter was virtually untouched by the explosion.
The technician suspected of causing the blast had never been thought of
as 'bright' by his peers.

Most of you are aware of those crazy stories that some people try to pass off as real and in turn create a "thats true" mentality.  We've heard of the alligators in the sewers of NY and how the kid from Life Cereal (Mikey) died from mixing Pop Rocks and Coke.  How about some more?  And are there any out there that may have a bit of truth to them.

Not sure Scott.  There are so many sites for this out there.  Did you read the ice fishing one in Minnesota?  One of the best.

Watto's Junk Yard / Darwin Awards

Anyone else seen these before?  I had learned about these about 6-7 years ago and had forgotten about them til recently.  If you are not familiar, these awards are devoted to people who contribute to evolution by offing themselves in an idiotic yet amusing manner.
Check it out: www.darwinawards.com or better yet, try this one: http://home.tiac.net/~cri/darwin/darwin.html

I know a bunch of people here love there old time games.  Im sure most of you are aware of the emulators and roms out there.  I was just curious if anyone else is interested in trading.  I personally only use MAME which is probably the most recognizable and has the most games to offer.  I have over 1000 games at the moment but still need a few to fill in some holes.  Anyone have a favorite ROM site out there?

The Bullpen / Marvel Famous Covers?

I collected the first 4 waves of these and they really brought back some memories of the old Mego line from the 70's.  Anyone know why the line was axed?  I would assume poor sales.  Its too bad since so many great figs were left out.  I always wanted The Thing, but I guess I will have to settle for the Marvel Legends version.

Scott, an EP is due this October, along with a DVD of this show. They have recorded several songs in the studio and believe they will be finishing it off sometime this fall.  Weilands H problem will probably end up sidelining them a bit.  Hopeully because  Duff and Slash went through major addictions they can have some type of positive influence.  If not, Weilands just throwing his life away, along with talent.

I know its still in the early stages but this is one band that I am very excited to see what happens with.  Check out this link for a bootleg cut from a live show in L.A. Quality is not the best but still worth checking out.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Your Song...
« on: August 1, 2003, 10:51 AM »
Our wedding song is "All of my Love" by Zeppelin of course.  Still brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it.  My personal song would probably be "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd.  The song is just soooo relaxing to me.  My pick me up song would be "Rocket Queen" by GnR.
