The Vintage Collection / Re: Toy Fair 2012

I didn't see too much complaining regarding the mail away condition with this last one. Even if there was, Hasbro decides what they want to do based on internal planning/directions, with very little scouring of the interent for good/bad feedback. Some positive kudos are a bonus, some negatives a ding, but in the end it is about bean counters and product line models.

With the vintage packaging, they had to realize they were marketing the packaging as much as the figure. Everyone would be better off if they went to the old school plastic bagged figure in a white mailer. Cheaper on the production end, and maybe we end up with a more unique figure if they can forget about packing, the extra shipping it creates, etc.

On a really positive note, I had my first experience with Hasbro customer service today. I decided to open a 2nd giant AT-AT, and lo and behold it is missing a foot! I checked online to see if anyone even carried these anymore, and while TRU shows them in the system, they are store pick up only, and none in the 50 miles it lets you search had them.

I spoke with a Jackie on the phone at customer service (1-800-255-5516), and the foot is on its' way tomorrow. I really didn't expect it to be that easy!

Now to go open the other one buried in storage. I was going to leave it sealed, but it is more imporatant to me that it be complete.

Kubricks / Re: Deluxe Series 4 - Death Star

Picked up my dx4 kubs from Justin yesterday, and I am absolutely loving Vader! I consider this the best vader in my star wars collection, period. I love the vintage look,  it is simple, clean, and looks like a 1977 kubrick. The cape seems to be a slightly thinner version of Ben's material, and feels just right.
The others are all pretty good- Leia's great, the TIE pilot is a nice vintage nod too. The dignitary is great alongside some Royal guards. R2 is a slight improvement over the early bird version, but needed an extra prop to be worth a slot (how about a holo leia or screen with the death star plans?). Antilles needs a partial lobotomy to fit in to his hair/helmet correctly, but I like him leading the blue shirts into futile battle.  ;D

Super great trade with Nick, thanks!

There wasn't enough time between the shuttle release and MTT development for the sale of the former to impact the release of the latter.

My money is on this thing getting to 50% pretty quick. They'll probably change the basic price point at some time as well.

The Original Trilogy / Re: Things I never noticed before
« on: February 13, 2012, 06:14 PM »
So watching A New Hope the other day...

The Death Star is making its orbit around Yavin, there are 20 ships attacking a base the size of a small moon, what then heck are all the stormtroopers running around with blasters for? Are they going to fire in to space through a window? Were there laser archery slits somewhere I hadn't noticed before? I found myself laughing, thinking those actors must have felt like dweebs, and no wonder they all thought it would flop. Imagine running down a hallway with wacky armor on (which is clearly completely useless) and a toy gun, slipping on the floors, and some guy yelling "fall over like your ship has been hit with a torpedo". Falling in that armor had to be painful.

Oh, and that stormtrooper hitting his head on the door makes me laugh out loud now too.

I'm afraid by the time they get to the OT, Bespin will be full of pit droids, and Hoth will have an igloo dwelling race of Gungans.

I'm only on my first cup of coffee, but I believe this is the first prequel carded figure. A step in that direction could lead to hooded maul being re-released without the bike on a card. Or some clone repaints (501st, shocktroopers, etc).
Definately off-topic, but the window is closing on the best opportunity to do some CW figures too. Kit Fisto would be a great kubrick IMO, and I would like to see Ahsoka and Cad Bane as well.

MC arrived today.  Just sitting there staring at me to get my work done....

Get busy! We want to know which chase you get!

I struck out again with my box from NCS (0-3 for the last three Deluxe releases).  Good luck to the rest of you who ordered from them!

Drat- I had an order with them for a while too, but backed out once I saw the chases.

The Imperial Commander on Ebay sold today for $255.  Anyone here get him?

not me- I wouldn't mind paying $200 if it was a better looking figure- But that thing just isn't worth regular chase prices, much less dx chase prices. That goes double for the R2-AMP-U-T

As poor as the chases seem to be, I am still pretty jazzed by the basic 6. And I agree with the comment made earlier that if Antilles had been a chase, we would all be dropping $300 to get him. The TIE pilot is such a good throwback to the vintage figure. Leia is a big improvement over the toilet paper dress version from the early bird set. Vader looks supremely retro and will be great with the dx3 Ben. And antilles is a great addition, sort of the Garindan of this wave. The Dignitary is pretty cool too, and again, I'm glad he didn't end up being the chase- he would have gone for insane prices as well.

Maybe it's my nature, but I just have to disagree.  I'm glad you guys are fired up and looking at this stuff as positive.  To me however I'm seeing Hasbro deja vu all over again.

Leia is better, but I think the early bird set is fine and while yeah, an improvement is welcome, it's not really necessary.

Another Vader?  Really?  Cuz we were all hoping for it?  I'm sort of ok with it if it's a more vintage-y version but I still don't find it necessary.

Another Tie Pilot?  ****, I still have five from the previous release I never moved.  We complain about $10-11 Hasbro figures for rehashes but because it's from Japan $14 is ok?  Not for me.

R2?  Yawn should cover it because we only have how many of him/it?

I'm good with Antilles (though not a figure I could personally care about owning) and the Dignitary though but I can wait for a $60 set some time down the road.  The chases?  They suck.  'Nuff said.

Crustily yours...

Some good points, but I still say the pemican and AT-ST driver are making you focus on the bitter tastes.

My first reaction to the vinyl/vintage re-does was an eye roll. But Ben is great, and I look forward to a vader to match. Honestly, the line can't survive on characters only seen for .7 seconds or that made it on to a CCG card. At least they have found a way to bring the main characters back in to the fold with some creativity (retro), rather than repacks (R2 has no business here though), unless he came with a holo leia, or something else unique (at least DX2 gave him a prop shot glass set).

What we want is often based on what we already have, but the series would dry up if they only let themselves try to make something that hasn't been made before. And we would (and) have cried foul at repacks, as many of us shelled out big bucks for things like han/luke stormie, etc.

I may not buy them all anymore, but I still find this line far more interesting than Hasbro's generally regurgitated and vomited offerings (CW being the exception for me).
