My favorite part is the fact that the "Join or renew here" link in his newspost is not a link to the Hyperspace sign-up page at the Official Site.

It's a link to the Hyperspace sign up via ShopStarWars.  That way, he can use his ad referral code to make sure that he gets a cut of your $40 subscription fee for himself.  Savvy marketing once again...

Nice catch, Jeff.

Kinda explains the whole promotional aspect of it from RS...

Is anyone running against him?

Here are the current poll results.

So, that means that if, say, GreenDay101 were to have 10 people sign up and refer to him, he'd be the next Fan Club President?

That's the worst way to reward someone with the Official Fan Club's Presidency I've ever heard of.

I dunno, I think this isn't as big a deal.  Doesn't RS have sponsorship deals with the people that Dustin's linking to?  If so, they wouldn't have any issue with that.

Rob, the bigger issue is in the campaign thread itself.  He wants us to link this to other sites, but when was the last time RS allowed people to link other sites on their forum?

Thanks Josh...corrected.

Well, seems like RS is trying to get Dustin to be the next Fan Club President.

I'm cool with that, BUT not cool with the way it's being promoted.

Dustin For President link

The post will make more sense if you click on the 'learn how to help' link in the first post.

Now, here's a copy of my post there, which I expect will be removed from RS.

Sorry to derail the thread Dustin, and if you delete this, I will fully understand.

Nothing against you - you have my support in every way except the $50 it costs us in Canada to subscribe.

However, Philip's post today has pissed me off.

On the main page:

Quote
I gotta say, I'm underwhelmed by the subscriptions...

In the report:

Quote
It's time to get out the support.

Those with current subscriptions, you can renew now and it will tack on your subscription to the end of your current term.

Can't afford it? That's not so unusual with all the stuff we have to buy for our collections; give one away as a gift to a friend, or ask for one for your birthday. Get it early even.

Or, go wear out your friends and have them sign up.

We need to get this thing moving!

And, finally, from the Campaign page.

Quote
How can I help?
You can help spread the word by grabbing a campaign banner and throwing it up on your website. Simply right-click and choose "save as" to download them to your desktop. Then link the banner back up to the official DLR campaign headquarters (this page). No website? Use this limited-edition campaign avatar in the forum!

Okay.....

I am NOT begging for a subscription to an expensive website fanclub for my birthday.  Asking a friend to give me a $50 US gift out of the blue is ridiculous.  If I or my friends were that rich to just throw away $50 ata  time, I'd be joining up for the hell of it.

Finally, and my biggest complaint here, is that the request is to advertise this campaign on other websites, but Philip's own rules will ban you if you advertise another website here.  Is that hypocritical or what?

Sorry, Philip, I normally do not like to say negaitive things about RS or you publically, but these comments are a pure joke.

Again, I want to make it 100% clear that I am in full support of Dustin's bid for Fan Club President.  I just hate the method of getting him there, and the pure hypocrisy in Philip's statements about advertising sites.

What does everyone else think of this BS?

CJ is representative of a chimpanzee, which is one of the three great apes (of which gorillas and humans are the other two).
Humans are classsified as apes....?! ??? :-X

Scientifically, yes.

Chimpanzees are over 99% genetically identical to us. ;)

Here's hoping Sweden wins, so Mats Sundin can win something of significance this year. ;)

I saw the first two periods of yesterday's Canada game, and I have to say they got what they deserved.  They were shut out three times, and were getting outshot badly against Russia.

Brent, I'm glad you didn't include McCabe in your bashing....

It's good they went down like this.  Now there will be no outcry when Quinn gets turfed by the Leafs in a couple of weeks.

LOL, yep.  GO LEAFS GO!!!

Alfreddson should be entered in the summer Olympics as a triathalon athlete.  He sure gets enough exercise on those stationary bikes. ;)

For the record, Curious George is NOT a monkey.

Monkeys have tails, among other identifying characteristics, that set them apart from apes.

CJ is representative of a chimpanzee, which is one of the three great apes (of which gorillas and humans are the other two).

I liked 'monkeys' enough that my university degree was heavily involved in the ancient history of them. ;)

I hope it's just a temporary thing and he is smart enough to sit out of the Olympics and not de-rail his duty to Ottawa and the NHL just to satisfy the Czech Team.   :-\

On the contrary, I'd love it.  Ottawa sucks, and the last thing I ever want to see is that egotistical excuse for a team win anything.

Well said by Chris, and it's refreshing to see a site admin that will take such a stance publically.

Mojo, if you're joking, it doesn't read that way, and if you're being sarcastic, then maybe you should pay attention to a certain part of Chris' post. ;)

so there's no reason why their coverage should be lacking in comparison.

Very true - when the site can afford to send someone there.

If someone was able to go, then I agree wholeheartedly.  However, in my opinion I think it's wrong to take shots at the site because they were not able to compete financially in this instance at least.

The site I moderate on couldn't afford to send someone either.  Am I upset?  No.  Do I consider my site minor-league?  Compared to the big spenders like RS or GH, I have to say yes, but quality sometimes rules over quantity, and I like the friendly atmosphere of the smaller sites more.

I'm free to complain like anyone else here...just like you're free to come on here and insult folks with all your information you ASSume everyone else knows-which is why it's called a forum.

I'm with CorranHorn on this one.

He didn't point any fingers at you specifically Slothus.  If anything, I'd assume he was referring to the nice friendly post from DeanPaul which was followed by the post announcing Jesse's resignation.

To send someone to an event like Toy Fare, you'll be looking at transportation, accomodation, food, and of course spending expenses.  That can quickly add up to alot of money.

If it comes out of the person's own pocket, as it most likely will, it probably also means that they have to book vacation time with their job, or take a leave of absence at school, if they're students.

That's alot to expect of people who, aside from the owner of the site, are in all likelihood volunteers donating their time to make this a better place.

Many sponsors donate toys rather than money - where do you think the contests come from?  Like CH said, those that do supply cash are probably barely covering site expenses.  Certainly not enough to book even one staff member a holiday trip to Toy Fare or Comic Con.

Therefore, before people call the site 'bushleague', or find other ways to make their lack of appreciation for this free site known, maybe ask questions first.  Slothus, I know you did ask questions first - and that is why I do not believe CH was calling you in his post.

The accusation was made that 'know-it-alls' assume everyone knows the financial make-up of the site.  To hear some of the whining is equally assuming that the site can send people across the country at whim.

And to show how bad I feel for being a part of letting our great members down, I'm resigning my staff position here at JD.

Okay, I know I'm not especially active in the forums here so my opinion probably means little, but how many others think this is not right?

So the TF coverage fell apart.  Does that make you any less of a leader for these forums?

I think not.

If you're right, then yeah it's too excessive.

I had the understanding it was a much smaller amount - like only $5000.
