American Film Institute Heroes and Villains

Not sure if anyone caught this on CBS tonight but it listed (apparently) the top 100 heroes and villains from films in the last 100 years.  

Star Wars had the most nominees with four: Leia, Luke, Han and Vader.  I have no idea where the three heroes placed (couldn't find results on web yet, later) but Vader finished at #3.  He came in behind Norman Bates (2) and Hannibal Lecter (1).  Not too shabby.

I would've gone with Vader at number one.  Thing is, he did manage to redeem himself.

Anyone notice that Hayden Christensen's looking a little bigger?  He was one of the actors commenting on the various heroes and villains.  Looks like he put some weight on for EPISODE III.

Yeah, I noticed it too.  Little more solid, just growing up I suppose.

I like where Vader ended up.  Even for my age, Psycho wasn't very dramatic when I saw it, but when it was released  That was a stunning move to release a movie like that.  I can accept Norman being there.  

I still haven't seen Hannibal but Lecter is a most excellent villain and certainly more evil, if only on a personal scale than Vader.  

One of the interesting things to watch is my daughter watching SW movies.  She's 3.  Dooku and Jango don't scare her in the least.  She LOVES Darth Maul.  But Vader scares her.  The only other thing that scares her is the Witch in Snow White.  I've been a Vader fan for so long that the evil that comes across in the movie is totally lost on me.  He's not bad, he's cool.  But not to a 3 year old.

I forget where I heard/saw it, but several months back (perhaps even more) there was a fair amount of news that George Lucas specifically told Hayden that he really needed to beef up (as in a direct order) quite a bit in order to be a more convincing Vader in waiting for Ep. 3.  No lanky and skinny little Anakin/Vader runt would fly now that Ani's not a young padawan anymore, and is about to start getting medevil on some fools in the not so distant future as the Dark Lord of the Sith...

I believe this story even made the rounds in most of the evening's celeb/entertainment shows, like Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and E!  So I'm not surprised at all to hear that he's indeed bigger right now, since that was pretty much a mandatory goal ordered upon him from the head honcho himself!  Glad to see he's really going through with it.  Should make it much better when you imagine him filling out that hefty Vader outfit.

Wish I could've seen him on the show though...

AFI listed Obi-Wan Kenobi as hero #37, Han Solo as hero #14, and Vader as villain #3...

What do you think? Should they have added more or should the rankings be changed?

After three years in the Clone Wars, Anakin had better look beefier. Wielding a lightsabre is one thing, but given his disposition, I'd like to think he's gotten his share of battle scars doing hand-to-hand combat. Goodbye pretty boy, hello Doc Savage.

As I've mentioned in the Jedi Armor in Episode III? thread over at GH.com, I'd love to see the next movie start with Anakin in Jedi armor reminiscent of Vader's attire:

Coruscant - Jedi Temple Landing Platform - EXTERIOR - Dawn

Morning light colors the sky warm red and orange as a Republic transport lands on the platform. A ramp is lowered and a dozen battle-armored Jedi disembark. Among them, OBI-WAN KENOBI and his apprentice ANAKIN SKYWALKER. They are greeted by MACE WINDU and YODA.

Mace: Welcome home.

Obi-Wan: It's good to be back, Master Windu; Master Yoda.

Yoda: A long rest, you have earned.

Obi-Wan: (rolling his shoulders in discomfort) It will be good to get this armor off and into something a bit less restraining.

Yoda: A necessary evil, it was. Hopefully, a thing of the past.

Anakin: (stretching and flexing his arms) I don't know. I've gotten used to it.

YODA shoots MACE a worried look.

I personally think that Hannibal Lector is more vicious than any othewr villain...nothing but pure evil...hehehehe

Yeah as far as villains go Hannibal is where he should be.  Although I like Vader much better but I'm biased.  I could not believe Luke was not on the list considering Obi-Wan and Han Solo made it.

And for the record:  Where the hell was R2 dammit?!?  

And also for the record:  I bet Han and Luke would have had their roles reversed in the hero list (Han out and Luke in) PRIOR to the Special Editions.  But when Greedo changed his mind, and took a shot at Han first, Han's hero status greatly increased (not such a ruthless dude after all).  And when Luke changed his mind and screamed like a little girl while falling down the shaft at Bespin, he went from a great hero who was giving himself to to the Force, to...  well... a little sissy girl (no offense ladies  ).  Chew on that, if you will...

I still think that Luke was a classic enough hero to put in there even if he wouldn't have rated as high as a Han or Vader (should be #1) he should have made the list...the Terminator made it for villian and hero
