Songs that get absolutely STUCK in your head...
« on: September 11, 2003, 10:44 PM »
There's a fairly new song out right now from the Bad Boys 2 soundtrack that's all over the radio stations here in L.A., by Nelly, P-Diddy, and some other dude, that has a backing "vocal" that is absolutely STUCK in my freaking head.  We're talking all day long for several days now.  Just keeps going, and going (like the Energizer Bunny) - like it's on some type of continuous play in my brain or something.  I wake up in the morning and it's already playing.  I'm at work, browsing through royalty statements, and it's going.  Non-stop I tell ya'!   :-\

This backing vocal is that chant that they do at all the "Indian" related sports franchise's stadiums, most notably the Atlanta Braves when the crowd is doing the tomahawk chop (but also at Florida State and Kansas City Chiefs football games too)...

You know - that OOOooohhh, ooouhooohhh, ooohhh, ooouhooohhh...  Sounds perfect in my mind, but I bet you're not following that lyrical text right there, eh?  I'm sure you know the one.  How do I get it out of my noggin?  I've tried humming other songs in there, but the "chant" always pops back in!

Another little repetitive vocal chorus that's been getting stuck in there as well is that new Beyonce/Jay-Z song - the part where she goes uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh uh-oh...  Argh!!!  Make it go away!!!  If it's not one, it's the other!   :'(

So, what songs have you folks gotten stuck in your heads non-stop?  Did they ever go away on their own, or did you have to eventually seek therapy, as I'm considering doing...   :P

Ick. Always songs I hate that end up stuck in my head. That 'song' from Ashanti and Nelly makes me want to pull a Van Gogh and cut my ears off. Such dreck.

I don't really recognize rap as an art form, anymore. Just a bunch of ill written bling bling garbage. I enjoyed rap much more when 90% of the "artists'" songs were dedicated to killing each other...
It painted a nice picture - if they are really gangstA, I thought, they will whipe themselves out within the year... saving me from having to hear another rap song again.

who let the dog's out?

you didn't say good songs did you?

I've managed to block out a song that absolutely tortured me back in 1988 as we were cycling through Australia.  Honestly I can't remember it now, but I hated it then.  Drove me freaking nuts at the time.  Always tried to block it with Sweet Child of Mine, but no joy.

Kind of an ignorant "view" but I really have not come to expect much more from anyone these days...

There is far more to "rap" (Hip Hop) than the "gangsta" thugs and "bling bling"... Let me ask this have you ever in your life given a listen to the following artists...?

Common
The Roots (a entire band of musicians)
De La Soul
Jurrassic 5
Talib Kweli
Mos Def

And much more...

Far from what I would call "gangsta" and "bling bling" artists.

Should people then lop everyone that plays any form of rock be it classic or alternative into the weed smoking, heroin addicts that so many are? Sounds just as ignorant... or maybe not in your book  ::)

Hip Hop was a "fad" that was due to die well over 10 years ago and WOW still going... just like that pink shade wearing bunny. Amazing  :o

There is a culture to Hip Hop that most have no minute clue about... It started out as an art form that was about people having fun and letting loose. Nothing that violent beyond any average street fight of the 70's and 80's...

Of course it got exploited and has run array but so does any form of "art"... There are some incredible people involved in the Hip Hop culture from lyrical geniuses (Rakim) to musical (Wyclef).

It's funny but even some of the old bad boys of rock have gone as far as sampling (etc) in their music... taken from Hip Hop one of the first genres to ever do so.
There are producers (beyond P Diddy  ::) ) that are amazing and have worked w/ some of rocks bad boys in the Hip Hop field.

Then newest producers on the seen producing everything from Hip Hop to rock is The Neptunes. A crew I can almost guarantee we'll be hearing a lot more from in the coming days.

What's funny is that people sooo against the "vile" being that Hip Hop is... love them Beastie Boys. Granted they did have a start in punk... it's where they drifted off into that made them what they are today IMHO.

Though I thank the man upstairs for people like the Beasties that see beyond the ignornat view of Hip Hop and welcome it w/ open arms.

I love all music... Music is too beautiful a thing to limit one self... I can say the only form of music I can not listen is modern day country...

From David Bowie to Neil Diamond to Led Zep to The Roots... there is some incredible music to be heard...

But getting back on topic... Nothing at the moment has stuck in my head... although that annoying uh oh from Beyonce's song does when I hear that... which I try to hear as seldom as possible.

Ugh. Country music. Proof that God really does hate us and wants us to suffer as much as possible in our short time here. Johnny Cash is the only artist to come from this genre I can stand.

It's like I've always said in actual social interaction: If you're a country music fan, your life is probably as empty and pathetic as it deserves to be.

If we who don't like hip hop make snarky comments about it, it's because we don't like it, not because we're ignorant. No amount of rolleye graemlins will likely change that either. I don't mean any offense here. No flames; the site's name isn't Rebelscum after all. :)

Go to Disneyland (or Disney World) and take the "It's a Small World After-all" ride.....

You'll be trying to jump out of the boat before the ride is over. ;)

My mother said "P.I.M.P." is the kind of song that sticks in your head...

Yes, my 54 year old mother said PIMP was a catchy tune.

It's funny how you find my view ignorant when you don't seem to understand my view at all. You've taken what I said out of context - I said I don't consider rap an art for ANYMORE, which should have hinted to you that at one time I did. FYI, I grew up in an urban setting, all I ever heard was rap, and at one time I somewhat enjoyed it.
Rap used to stand for rythm and poetry....

Allow me to make my point visually -

I can name just a few reasons why today's rap is ignorant simply by looking at the album cover - and yes, I've listened to the CD too, and it only proves my point more.

Seems I missed the "anymore" part as you stated and pointed out (unintentionally I assure you)...

Though digging deep enough under the pile of **** like "Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz" there is still a ton of incredible groups and performers inthe Hip Hop world.

Those I mentioned in my post are still making albums as we speak... I think it is still an incredible art form and beyond all the **** out there there is still an incredible amount of great work. What so many do not understand is that Hip Hop isn't just a form of music but also of so many things from breakdancing to graffitti... and a lot more in the mix.

It opened doors for so much more in the music world. Modern day geniuses like Beck have all paid homage to Hip Hop...

Like I mentioned any art form gets itself wh*red out... Look at punk and some of the utter garbage that was/is called punk... I mean Good Charlotte  :'(

Nevermind Joey Ramone turning in his grave for them allowing his music to be used for some cell phone commercial...

I read the thread on Blender rags greatest guitar thing and saw people talking about all kinds of incredible guitar players... but no one even dared mentioned Wyclef Jean who is w/out a doubt of one of the best out there...

Hip Hop is by far not about just the "gangsta" and "bling bling" that people always use as an example of the state of Hip Hop...

Uh...  Not really a rap/hip-hop debate thread Brad and Jimmy...  I was shooting for any particular songs, baselines, guitar riffs, commercial jingles, theme park attraction songs, etc. that get stuck in one's brain, regardless of musical genre...   :-\

The fact that a couple rappers were involved in the songs I mentioned above, really has no bearing whatsoever on the actual parts of those songs that I got stuck in my head, one being the "Indian war chant" sports theme song, and the other being Beyonce's little chorus bit.  That's all...  Those songs play on the regular Top 40 station out here all the time.  I suppose some of the rap/hip-hop baselines and hooks lend themselves a bit more to getting stuck in you noggin though, perhaps.

Gotta agree with Beth on the Small World one too.  That's a toughie to get out of your head after going on that ride!  Same with Pirates of the Caribbean's theme song...

Probably a ton of mindnumbingly catchy commercial jingles out there too, as Matt mentioned.

O Fortuna that great Epic like war song will always be with me.

Seeing as how I work with children the start of Teletubbies is logged deep in my brain.  ;D

Ooooh.  Not that's a good one Jimmy!  Usually takes several days to beat that one out of my head on the rare visit I make to FAO Schwarz.  Unfortunately, now it's back in my head again, and I haven't even heard the damned thing!   >:(  Thanks alot!   :-*
