 It's true. Didn't Mace Windu used to use the oldschool electro-beam lightsabers until he was convinced the new ones were more convenient?



 Oh, and are there any guidelines to this? IE are we allowed to use anything or are there restrictions like making a protocol without any threepio parts?

We had said that there was no requirement on the astromech... but I do think it would be cool maybe if we made it a rule that you couldn't use a regular dome on him.  But that's up to everyone else; not me.  For example though, you can come up with all kinds of different astromech head designs... I made these a while back using the bar stools from the cantina sets  -



For the protocol droid, the reason I had suggested not using any existing 3PO parts was to get some variety/creativity going instead of a basic C3PO repaint...

But again, I'm not the rule maker here.  Majority rules.  Whatever everyone wants to do is fine.

No, it doesn't have to be... so far everything has been, but anyone can contribute in any way they want.  Is there a particular droid that you have in mind?

Hmmm, this will be pretty difficult if we can't do a simple repaint 

How do you get the dome off of the astromech?  I don't want to damage him

I used a steak knife on one, and an exacto on the other.  Just cut below the dome until it snapped off.   My wife yelled at me for using the steak knife.

I guess you lose "neck" articulation if you do that?

Well I used 3PO parts, but I think these look different enough to be cool.

The first was made using the deluxe 3PO/Battledroid at droid factory with the easy to swap because thier designed to parts.


And the back:


The second is just a bunch of parts cobbled together.

Oops, forgot one. I didn't use 3PO parts for this one! It's IG-88 and battle droid arms. I used that same maroon paint as I did on the protocol droid, what can I say I liked how the other one turned out. I'll just imagine that some SW chatacter who ownes them also likes that color...
I left his mid to lower legs bare of new paint on purpose, thought it almost looked like shorts.

Those are completely outstanding Don.  I remember seeing the 3PO before.  He actually looks menacing.

What really impresses me though are your painting abilities.  Wow... what type of paint do you use?
