I didn't even know you could shop around your electricity provider!

You need to check out the Texas Electric Choice website:

Here's a direct link to the various providers they list.  I printed out a sheet with each one's name and number and a little spot for notes and then I called about 10 or 12 of them asking them about rates, contracts, guarantees etc... and eventually decided that Gexa was the best available for my location.

No choice in Bexar county (San Antonio).  The electric provider, CPS, is owned by the City of San Antonio.  CPS creates most of the city's revenue.

That sucks.  I thought the de-regulation that started 2 years ago was state-wide.  TXU provides all of the electricity here, but we can still buy it from other vendors who buy it from TXU and then sell it cheaper than TXU does.
