Animated OT-Era Show: Would You Like To See It?
« on: February 21, 2006, 03:41 PM »
After seeing some of the Gentle Giant upcoming animated statues, based on the Clone Wars-ish look but featuring Original Trilogy characters, I can't help but think what an animated Star Wars toon would be like if set in the OT time period.  Not that I don't like the idea of seeing further Clone Wars style toons, but a part of me wouldn't mind seeing Luke, Han, Chewie, Leia, Vader and our other favorites from the OT era.  It wouldn't have to necessarily focus on just the main characters, but it could explore other areas and characters not touched on in the movies.  Would anyone else be interested in something like this, or should the animated world stick to Clone Wars and other time periods?

This is an older topic, but after the recent Clone Wars release - and the upcoming TV series - in combination with the fact that I just got my first Animated Maquette (Han Solo), I was wondering if anyone else might have an interest in seeing an Original Trilogy Animated Series.  Personally, its something I would like to see, especially after seeing what is possible in this format.  It would be nice getting some weekly OT on the ole TV.  If we saw something like this, what time frame would you like to see it in?  Would you like it in the "middle" of the movies, similar to the way Clone Wars is (between ANH and ESB, or between ESB and ROTJ)?  Would you like to see it post ROTJ?  I guess there is a lot of good info to mine before ANH and post ROTJ, but for me it might be episodes set during the OT.  That way we can still have Vader/Emperor (unlike post ROTJ), and still have all the heroes (unlike pre ANH).  Anyways, just wanted to bump this up for any further thoughts or ideas.

I'm a sucker.  I'd watch for sure.  I bet you could even get Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher to do voice-overs.

I could definitely see Hamill doing some voice work, especially since he already lent his voice to another animated show.  I would watch that for sure, probably moreso than the Clone Wars cartoon coming out.  And who wouldn't want to see more animated Jawas?!

No thanks. I think the OT is fine just as it is. ;)

EDIT: I'd still watch it though. ::)

Animated OT Trilogy?  No...  Animated (Clone Wars 3D style) Original Trilogy Era toon though?  Yeah I'd be down for that...  Something that expands on the adventures of Rogue Squad?  Hell yeah.  Count me in on that.

I'd fall into the David camp. No thanks, but I'd watch it anyway. I would probably burn out on SW though.

Yeah, that's more what I meant (I should probably change the title).  Not necessarily re-dos of the movies themselves, but a series set in the "OT era".  Great idea Jesse.

I'd love to see a show that covers adventures between Eps IV and V. Luke the novice Jedi, Han the reluctant rebel, Leia being used as a symbol for the Alliance now that Alderaan is gone. Wedge the everyman. Vader hunting, always hunting. Maybe an episode about Lando winning Cloud City.

Basically, stories like the old Marvel series, but with the 20/20 hindsight of knowing exactly where we are going.

After seeing the Clone Wars movie and thinking how neat an experience that was, the only down side that came to mind was how much more I (and presumably the general public as well) would have enjoyed a "classic" Star Wars, Luke-and-Han story, since we're adding on outside of the Saga itself now. Who knows, maybe someday we can have such an animated movie and show, once the infrastructure is built.

That's an interesting point.  Although we know these animated movies weren't ever going to be the box office hits that the live action movies were, I wonder if an OT-based movie would have gotten more attention or not.  I think for many of us, it probably would have - but I don't know about the kids.  Even with all the attention on the prequels the last 10 years, I still think Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie are more household names in the "general public" than Anakin, Padme, Mace, etc.  I do think the kids tend to lean more towards prequel stuff, at least the younger ones from "non-fan" households, and this current Clone Wars movie is obviously aimed a little more at the kiddos.  I know I'd like to see some animated OT - even if its just on the small screen.  Make it an hour-long action block on CN, Clone Wars followed by an OT Series :).

I'd watch a OT-era show as along as its not CG and not some weird stylization. I really don't need to see Luke with lots of weird angles and three eyes.

1 word...

Sucked.

:)

Seriously though, SOTE is more limited, IMO, as it's a single drawn out story...  If we're talking TV series, there almost needs to be weekly adventures tied to the greater story as a whole...  I'm talkin' Rogue Squad baby!  Ground up EU about the pilots and their adventures in and out of the cockpit!  SOTE maybe would make a cooler movie (animated) than a TV series?

I myself would be much more interested in a series simply called "Star Wars" than a "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" series, but stick it in the timeline between ANH and ESB and that gives plenty of opportunity for Rogue-centered stories, as Luke and Wedge were the leaders of the group at the time. Just let's not make it a show about Janson, Hobbie, and Zev from the get-go.

The show absolutely would have to get into minor characters to make it work in the long run, but the whole appeal to me of an OT-era show is the original heroes in further adventures, something that (other than the Marvel comics) has been sorely overlooked in the EU. And I know kids would eat up more of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie. It almost writes itself.

I also would be disappointed to see a "Shadows of the Empire" series, as that would discount Han Solo from the mix, and pretty much that whole story-arc has already been told.
