Organizing Your Fodder?
« on: March 16, 2006, 09:56 PM »
I was just wondering How you keep your Fodder Organized along w/ all your Other Customizing Gear?

I've built up a rather Large Fodder Bank over the Years, but I've never really took the Time to Organize it So I could use it more effieciently. Every Time I Start Planing a new Custom I have to Dig through 2 Huge Bins of Fodder Figs, 2 Tool Boxes and one Shoe Box Full of Various Parts, and One Bin and 2 Tackle Boxes Full of assessories. This Usually results in me Just getting Fusterated and Buying new Fodder to make the Custom I probably had the Parts for already.  There has to be a better Way.

What's Your System?

I just use a big fish and tackle box for most of my stuff.  It's made by Plano, and is similar to this one.  I found mine at Wal-Mart, and I got a smaller one a while back from Target, so they're everywhere.  The removeable trays are great because you can set the dividers where you want for longer parts.

You probably have a lot more fodder than I, so it might be better to get one of those big red Craftsman tool carts at Sears.   ;D

The large plastic "sorting" trays that are rigid polystyrene shells with little clear drawers and such are what I use.  I have one specifically for weaponry/gear, one for bodyparts.  I keep a little, half-assed, catalogue of figure's broken down piece-by-piece and readily available for me when I need them.

Unfortunately I'm maxing out one of the large ones for figure parts, gonna have to switch up soon to a new one.

I'd like to organize my fodder, but by the time I stand up it's underneath 4 inches of murky water with dirty toilet paper on top of it, so I usually just opt to flush it in it's original disorganized state.
If you vote for me all of your wildest dreams will come true.  Thank you.

Me too. My desk that I work out is loosely organized into four drawers:
All usable fodder, accesories, etc.
Figs that are almost done but don't want to finsih (I will occasionally go into it and rip one apart to finish another one)
Complete s*** that I've messed up beyond all recognition (Occasionally something gets in there that I want...I go through it from time to time and find something useful...pauldrons and such)
Then on my desk is paint, brushes, knives, and current projects...as well as my four vehicles that I've customized...my ARC-170 is usually on top of my Xbox next to my desk.

If anyone could look at it they'd think it's a disaster, but it's uncanny that I know exactly where a part is...
My whole expanse...I cannot see...

I've been struggling with this a lot recently.  I've picked up several shoebox size sterilte containers that I've been using but I'm still not convinced this is the way to go.  I've got several containers full of loose figures and one with body parts only.  I've separated the loose heads form the loose limbs.  I've also got separate containers for loose cloaks, loose weapons, and loose "accessories"  However, I still end up opening every tub to look for something specific!!!  Maybe a tacklebox would be more effective.

Well, reading this response, its not really a helpful answer.  I guess I'm just hoping to ressurrect this thread a little bit more.  ;)

What little fodder I do have......... don't even go there. I also have a problem with fodder, it's "if it doesn't have articulation don't use it. ::)

I use Rubbermaid or similar brand storage containers of various sizes like those seen here:

This pic is from 2 years ago when I was still living in Palisades Park. I now have more than twice as many boxes of fodder (I have been collecting customizing fodder since the late 80's!). I organize them by putting like items together in the storage containers.

It's broken down loosley like this (I know there's more, but this is all I can remember off the top of my head since I'm not in my Hobby Room):

Starfighter shells (3 32 gallon tubs)
Starfighter parts (2 30 gallon tubs)
Airspeeder shells (2 32 gallon tubs)
Airspeeder parts (1 32 gallon tub)
Skiff/Sailbarge parts (1 32 gallon tub)
Non-repulsorlift Ground Vehicles (3 32 gallon tubs)
Non-repulsorlift Ground Vehicle parts (1 18 gallon tub)
Repulsorlift Ground Vehicles (2 45 gallon tubs)
Repulsorlift Ground Vehicle parts (1 32 gallon tub)
Diorama parts (4 55 gallon tubs and 1 39 gallon tub)
Freighter/Shuttle shells (2 55 gallon tubs)
Freighter/Shuttle parts (1 39 gallon tub)
Beasts Of Burden (2 39 gallon tubs)
Droids- whole (1 55 gallon tub)
Droids- parts (1 32 gallon tub)
Human figures- whole (1 45 gallon tub- soon to be 2 45 gallon tubs)
Human figures- parts (1 18 gallon tub)
Non-Human figures- whole (1 39 gallon tub)
Non-Human figures- parts (1 18 gallon tub)
Vehicle mounted weapons (2 18 gallon tubs)
Engines (1 18 gallon tub)
Cargo including crates, barrels and misc. (2 18 gallon tubs)
Mele Weapons (1 18 gallon tub)
Cloaks/Vests/Skirts/Capes (2 18 gallon tubs)
Armor/Belts/other items that go "on" figures (1 18 gallon tub)
Helmets (1 18 gallon tub)
Misc. "Mechanical" Parts/Greebles (1 55 gallon tub and 1 39 gallon tub)
Non-Weapon "Other" Accessories (1 18 gallon tub)
Backpacks (1 18 gallon tub)

All of these boxes are filled to the brim and I'm soon going to have to get more boxes as my fodder library increases.

All of my various Blaster pistols and rifles are sorted by weapon class and stored in the 2 60-drawer organizers seen here:

The best thing about these boards is that if I get in trouble with my wife and I point out other people and say "See it could be worse"  Okay so thats not really the best thing but it sure helps me out!!!  Amazing collection of fodder (and we just see the tubs).

I don't have nearly as much as most of you, and there are about 12-15 WIPs in there somewhere. I can't seem to finish stuff I just start new things. :P

Nothing make a woman hotter than to open a guy's drawer, expect to find porn, but instead to discover hundreds of butchered figures as part of a man's "art."   ;D

That looks similar to most of my fodder tubs Ryan.   :)
