Summed up in one sentence.

There's really nothing more that has to be said....

Either way, a vote for Jeff or USC is a vote that Dustin doesn't get.  So in the end, you're accomplishing the same thing.

Not really. A vote for USC will widen the margin of victory over Dustin, whereas a vote for Jeff causes no gain in the lead for USC.

OK, my second sentence may not be true.  But my first one is - a vote for Jeff or USC is a vote taken away from Dustin.

Dustin For Fan Club President!

No kidding. As you know they're having a Hyperspace signup contest over at Starwars.com. We've decided to have a bit of fun with it. Read all about it here.

Again, I'll stress that this is not about "winning" the contest.  As has been stated time and again, this is only about having some fun with the whole thing.  They really don't even care who wins, actually--and we're all winners from all the fun and excitement this has caused.  And we only have just over a month of this fun left, so let's knock off the seriousness and negativity and join along in the silly, silly hijinks.

Up until now though, Dustin has probably gotten all of his referrals through the endless spamming.  I would imagine that in the final hours, Rebelscum will start registering accounts themselves to put him over the top.

It's what I would do if the race were that close and I were in Dustin's shoes.  Basically just spend the money you were going to spend to go to Comic Con anyway.

Then I'd give the accounts away.

Still wondering how the heck this USC guy has so many referrals.  Does he really have 60 friends?  Is he picking up referrals from people sick of the spam?  I'm really curious.

You know what I didn't know about all this??  I had no idea Master Replica is endorsing Dustin.  He has it listed on his endorsement page.  I know they had a blurb about it in their blog a while back but I don't recall them stating "We endorse Dustin" or "We endorse USC" or anything to that effect.

That would be a crappy way to win, and I'm not even sure you could do it.  Wouldn't you have to have legitimate names, e-mail addresses and home addresses for each "member" who signed up?  It's not like one person or entity could donate $800 and then assign memeberships to people after the fact.  However, I wouldn't put it past RS to figure out a way to do this, even if it meant buying memberships or membership extensions for all the staff members at the last minute.

I'll just be glad when it's over.  Assuming Dustin loses that is.  If you think you're seeing spam now, just imagine how often we'd see/here about him being FC president if he wins.  That would probably be the proverbial straw that broke my back with regard to visiting RS.

It would be very easy.  They could just sign random staff members, friends, etc up.  OR...they could just send 40 kits to one address using a bunch of different names.  It's not about "referrals", it's about selling subscriptions, and I'm sure Hyperspace doesn't care how many go to one place, or to fake people.

I predict this is exactly what will happen, and I don't think it's a crappy way to win at all.

It's just like those mothers that sell the hell out of Girl Scout cookies during the competition and then end up buying 20 more cases for themselves (which they bring to work and sell to their coworkers) to help their kid win a prize.

Exactly.  So all the little girls who bust their asses to sell cookies so they can go on a trip or win a prize they could never afford themselves LOSE while the rich girls with the rich parents who could have just sent them on the trip or bought them the prize themselves WIN.

Crappy.

Not to fuel the fire, but I totally agree. I'm against buying votes, which is exactly what this is. We should have a true fan win, not the guy with the most backing and money. I think the buying of votes would put a big hole in their "we are just doing this for fun" speech.

First of all, this entire contest is about buying votes.   It has nothing to do with your level of fandom, your platform, how many friends you have, etc.  It's all about "how many subscriptions can you sell?".  In an arena like that, I don't know that there's anything wrong with buying a few to put yourself over the top.  When I was a kid I sold "Captain O" products (stationary and stuff) door to door, so I could win cool prizes.  I remember when I was a few points away from the prize I wanted, I had not problem buying an item for myself (or selling more to the family).  I don't see how this is any different.  Dustin is running for a free trip to Comic Con.  If he was down by 4 votes, he'd be stupid NOT to buy a few subscriptions and pop himself over the top. That trip is expensive.

You don't think that Dustin is a true Star Wars fan?  I know some of you guys don't like the dude, but come on.  Just because he works for Rebelscum doesn't mean he's not a fan just like (and probably even more than) a lot of other people out there.   As for "doing this for fun", it's become very obvious it's not just for fun anymore.  He's trying VERY hard to win.....and that's why I think eventually some cash will have to be laid down.  Maybe that USC guy is already taking money out of pocket, who knows?

Like any election, the person who has the best campaign and/or the most cash will win.  Dustin has the backing of tons of sites, plus the Rebelscum juggernaut behind him.  All of that's free.

Whoever this USC person is, they're doing it rather covertly.  Do they really have that many friends? Are they picking up the referrals of people who don't want Dustin to win?  Is it Lucasfilm just screwing around giving Dustin a goal to beat?  No matter who that dude is....he's doing incredible for having no campaign at all.

Still...When it comes down to the last week or two, I'd imagine if it's really close, the candidates could throw a few bucks towards their free trip to Comic Con into the kitty themselves. Up until this point, it's all been free, right?

As far as Girl scout cookies go, I think it's definitely in the cases these days.  Gone are the days when they would go around their neighborhood with a wagon.  Now, one mom takes her kids to Safeway to stand outside (both doors) peppering customers with sales pitches.

Another mom takes hers to the ferry terminal, where they ask every car waiting for the boat to buy a box (My last trip across, I bought two).

One co-worker buys several cases from his daughter then sells them at work a few weeks every year.  I've bought a few of those.

In the end, yeah....some girl scout without overzealous parents may lose out on whatever the prize is.....but the Girl Scouts as a whole win.

Dustin is surely making the folks at Hyperspace happy.  Imagine if he was taking referrals for a product that DIDN'T suck ass.
