Just for the sake of Devil's Advocate, how reliable is this information?

That's exactly what I want to know.

Perhaps someone at RS was asked to start this rumour to see the response?

I truly hope it's bogus cause 2" is insane.  The 3" SportsPicks are crap.  They warm pegs and don't appeal to kids.

It could be a rumor?  Wow!  I would hate to be a Hasbro rep headed into this storm at SDCC.  They might have to escort Matt out of the facilities :)

Yeah, I really think that Hasbro reps are going to be hammered about this next week...and rightfully so.  Although it isn't their fault personally, I'm sure they are going to get a number of questions about the Unleashed line.  I really hope the rumor isn't true, or at least not absolutely true, and this line is continuing.  It would be nice if they at least could do it in some capacity, even if it had to be...gulp...exclusive.  I don't usually like exclusives either, but if say they made them just for a place like TRU, if it meant the line continuing...I'd be for it.  Its better than it stopping altogether.  I'm wondering if places like Wal-Mart (or maybe Target) didn't put their full support behind it and that is why it is failing.  It would likely make them tough to find (if they weren't already), but Unleashed might lend itself well to an exclusive and/or limited line.  Better than nothing I guess.  We'll see.

You're probably right.

Target just recently put the unleashed line in their POG while WM has never really supported it.

TRU can't drive the business either (alone).

I'm sure it's not cheap to tool these larger scale figures - my bet would be the pay off ratio between sales and investment was not meeting company standards.

Probably true, unfortunately.

One of the things that vexes me (cue Joaquin Phoenix voice) is that since this rumor surfaced on "the other site," there has been nothing but universal eye-rolling and disbelief from not just the Unleashed collectors, but also people who don't even buy the figures normally.  Yes, there have been figures that warmed pegs from the line (Hoth Luke, Bossk, Tusken, reissue of Mace), but that is true for any line Hasbro does.  If they're going to use the rationale that Anakin and Obi-Wan are (unjustly) sitting on pegs too long as reason for cancellation, then why don't they cancel the Force Battlers line for the same reason?  All I see when I go into any retailer is Obi-Wan and Anakin FBs, and in at least 10 times the amount as the Unleashed figures.

While we're at it, let's cancel the basic action figure line too, since those Neimoidian Warriors and Mas Ameddas are just indicative of Star Wars in general not selling.  Let's just do Jedi Force figures from here on out, since they sell so well compared to the other lines.   ::)

I don't care what excuse Hasbro gives, this is simply put the most illogical cancellation of a line in their history of having the license.  The 12" line they killed themselves because they wouldn't take any risks with it, did subpar work on the figures they did release, and the minor characters they did wouldn't even appeal to the hardcore fans (Garindan? WTF?).  So, they cancel that line because of "a lack of interest."

Unleashed figures are, arguably, the most popular non-4" line that Hasbro has done for SW in the modern era.  There is more demand for these figures on Ebay than any other SW line, including the 4" figures (when you can get nearly any 4" figure from the last ten years for retail or below, but can't get any Unleashed, even the pegwarmers like Jango, for any less than original retail if you're lucky, that should tell them something).  Why they would choose to cancel such a popular line at what is arguably the height of its popularity, and a swell of demand for older figures to be released so Ebay doesn't have to be an option, is mind-numblingly stupid.

Matt, I'm really depending on you to be the eyes, ears, and voice of the Rep...well, me, at the SDCC, and give Hasbro hell for this decision.  An old friend used to refer to the Hasbro SW team as "crack smoking monkeys" and after a few years of sobriety, it seems that Hasbro has gone back to the junk.   :-\

Up to this point I haven't collected Unleashed -- though I'm going to get some of the recent ones (Ventress, Red shocktrooper, etc.) since those look better to me than most of the early offerings.

I hope this rumor is not true. And especially not the part about going to a 2" scale. I mean, what the **** is can they be thinking over there?? ::) ???

Well, it's time for another Amazon update on Vader/Sidious vs. Yoda/Ventress.

I just went over to check the status of my order (which as of earlier today had the ship date listed as today, and arrival expected between the 12th and the 14th), to find that the ship date has now been moved to September 9th!  I've already been looking for them at the local Target ("We don't have no Vaders") to no avail, but at this rate, I think I'll find them at K-Mart before Amazon actually gets them in stock.   ::)

Just a heads-up to my fellow Amazon/TRU.com preorderers that, at least in my case, there is now a fifth release date given for the figures.

Yeah, I've given up on my Amazon order.  I placed my order clear back in April!

If I see them at retail, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll pick them up.  And if my Amazon order does ship before I die, then I'll use them as trade fodder.

You know, if investment is a concern, no one is saying Hasbro has to offer three new molds every time a new assortment is released.

I think it's perfectly "ethical" to re-release older figs on new cardbacks once in a while to bring in new collectors and keep the pegs fresh.

Figs that have not seen the new cardback include:

-Padme
-Anakin (1st)
-Bald Vader
-Jango
-Maul

And of course, there are some figures that would just plain sell if you brought them back:

-Luke Jedi
-Leia
-Fett (as in Boba)
-Solo
-Stormie
-Yoda
-IG-88

And yes, I'm willing to relocate to Rhode Island.

I'm starting to wonder about the Amazon preorders as well.  I've had the Vader and Yoda/Sidious preordered since they first showed up on there (April?), and there's no sign of them shipping anytime soon.  I'll also pick them up if I see them at retail.  It looks like I just missed them the other day, as I saw a lone Assaj laying on the lower shelf at Target on Wednesday.  Always frustrating when that happens, but then again, I can't really drive over to Target every single day.  Hopefully they will show up in decent numbers.  If the line is indeed cancelled, I fear trying to find that last wave.

Just for ***** and giggles, I e-mailed Hasbro to see what kind of response they could come up with about the discontinuation of the Unleashed line.

Here's their answer:

"Hi Jesse,

Thank you for contacting Hasbro, Inc.

We are sorry to advise that the information you have requested is not readily available.

We are sharing your question with those internal parties who are more familiar with this piece of our business. We will respond to you, as soon as we receive the information from them.

We thank you, in advance, for your patience."

Internal parties?  I got quite a good laugh about this - I felt like I was asking the government who killed JFK.   ;)

Holly ****...I can't believe that someone would pay that much. It only goes to show that people spend their money on frivolous crap!
I have been told to go to hell; well at least I will know everyone there!
