color of casts question
« on: April 24, 2006, 09:24 AM »
Hi,

I've started to learn how to cast a few days ago. And I have a few questions:

How do you guys change the colors of your casts? Do you use diffirent casting products? I use Smoot-Cast 300, and it's pure white.
Can you just mix some model paint in with the 2 components or do I have to buy special pigment for it?

Any help would be usefull.

There are two choices I use.  The first is to add pigment to the smooth cast (I usually add the pigment into part A before mixing it with part b so I have some control over the color).  The second option I use is to dye the piece with RIT dye AFTER it has cured.

this pigment you're talking about, is this something you buy especially for casting or just "some paint"?

The pigment is an oil base, NOT WATER BASE, pigmant.
Water and resin/plastic dont like each other, It will fiz and ruin your casts.

You can order pigment from Micro mark. They sell a set of 8 that you can mix
and like paint and get any color you want.

You can also try Oil base paint pigments. You can get them from Home Deopt, or a hardware store.
I used these for a bit before i tried Micro MArks.  HAvent gone back to the hardware store stuff since Micro Mark.

I buy my pigments from Pearl Art Supply -- they are specifically for casting and they are made by Cast'n craft.
