Galactic Marines... Imperial Marines Then?
« on: April 24, 2007, 05:00 AM »
So the clones stomping around Mygeeto are called Marines, for whatever reason, but obviously bear similar resemblance to the "Snow"Troopers on Hoth...  Are Stormtroopers in what has been assumed to be cold weather gear now actually Marine divisions among the Stormtrooper ranks?  Or is everyone still sticking with Snowtroopers being just really Stormtroopers?

I've felt theyr'e just Stormtroopers in their cold weather gear (not "Snowtroopers", or specialized at all), but the whole Marine thing is an interesting twist.  The figures shipping more and more got me thinking about this some more actually, nothing more.  Just not sure what to make of the differences but I'm leaning towards them still being Stormies in cold weather uniforms is all, not bring "Marines" over to the classic era.

To me the Marines are the "Naval Troopers" of the OT now...  But I could see the argument made the other way totally.

I always felt that the Republic had other cold-weather legions with similar armor (Think Commander Keller's legion), but that the Bacara's Galactic Marines were sort of the "elite" cold-weather unit. The packaging of the Mace/Purple Clone Trooper Order 66 2-Pack calls the trooper a "Galactic Marine", though in my little SW universe the only "Galactic Marines" are Bacara's troops, all other units (Like Mace's purple unit or Keller's unit) are just regular cold-weather troops.

Well, if you want to consider Imperial marines as similar to Marines in the real world, they would be the Naval assault troops like you mentioned Jesse.

In the original Star Wars, the first stormtroopers you see would be Marines....the Sandtroopers, probably not.  So I guess they could all have the same uniforms and change them depending on whatever climate, like the snowtroopers.
This is the way.

I have spoken.

In the "old" ways of combat I agree Matt...  The guys boarding would be the "marines" of old, but obviously those times have changed (somewhat) and Marines see service all over hell's half acre anymore.  Definitely though I view the "Imp. Naval Trooper" as the Empire's actual Marine force, and their "Marines" pull double duty aboard ship more like the Marines of say the 19th or 18th centuries would have.  To me though Stormtroopers transcend that.

I was speaking more or less with a wink when I brought this topic up...  The uniform similarities, for seemingly no real reason, were why I mentioned it (between E3's Marine and E5's Snowies).  I still view Stormtroopers as simply that...  The Empire's "generic" Trooper for all seasons and climates used for security, spearheading attacks, and just generally getting the job done when you need it done...  I sorta look at them as similar to the SS units of WW2, in that they were "prized" and used in all kinds of scenarios...  They have their "deep cold" gear they throw on for missions like Hoth, a unique uniform that's not so much an homage to any past divisions of Clones but more just a functional design for the intended environment (not even so much the climate itself, but the whole environment of a world like Hoth).

The "regular" Stormie gear then for all the other environments (mostly anyway) with the modular packs to acompany them and to be adapted in an efficient manner with the right "additions" to it for the given environment.  De-humidifiers for jungles, heaters for colder weather (but not arctic-like weather), AC/cooling units for warm/desert climates, and so on...

I was curious if anyone actually looked at E3 and it changed their view of the Hoth Stormtroopers then from E5 though...  If they now were sort of looking at them as a continuation of the "Marines" then or what.  I personally didn't, I just think they adapted their uniforms, and then that was found to be a good "style" for those deep cold conditions so the Empire carried that forward for their now bland/generic and completely anonymous army because it was functional (and of course they improved upon it some probably).

Weird things to think about...  Goofy stuff.

I always thought Snow Troopers were Storm Troopers in cold weather armor too. The same goes with the Galactic Marines, I think when they're not on Mygeeto or other cold planets they wear regular armor. But they're speacalized more than regular troopers.

Right, I'll agree that the Galactic Marines are presumably more speacalized than the standard grunt trooper. As it is, though, I've yet to hear about a clone group that wasn't elite or speacalized.

On wookiepedia, and the starwars site, it refers to the marines as being hazardous area specialists, They would board ships, using special space armor, the mygeeto campaign, and others that have been yet to be revealed
