New JD Review: Lushros Dofine
« on: June 22, 2006, 02:35 AM »
Another week, another review...

This time I'm taking the microscope to yet another Neimoidian figure...  The H must love 'em because they make plenty of 'em.

This week it's

Captain Lushros Dofine, commander of the CIS Battleship Invisible Hand.

Clicky button, ready review...

So what can I say?  This guy is about as exciting as watching paint dry honestly...  His poseability sucks, but really by no fault of his own as he's in long flowing robes.  His colors are fairly bland overall, his hat isn't removable, he looks whiney.

Yet Hasbro did about as well as they coudl with him...  And you get the spiffiest of accessories with this figure I believe.  Short of something poseable with softgoods (doable) and a captain's chair, Hasbro really did make this dull character somewhat more interesting.

They cut corners though...  The hat in particular comes to mind...  Make it removable and spare us please.  In this day and age, just do it and give this figure SOMETHING cool to talk about other than his stuff.

Lushros is one of those figures you feel ripped off after you pay $7 for him, but yet you'd regret not having him in your collection.  It's frustrating in a way.

And here's something to chew on...  I've watched ROTS on HBO now a couple times in the last few weeks...  Is it me, or is this apparantly the Naval Officer/crewman's uniform for the Neimoidian military?  I think I see LOTS of these guys on the Invisible Hand, as well as running around while Anakin slices and dices the Separatist Leadership on Mustafar...  These guys seemingly are military, but man what odd outfits for military.

Anyway, do you really wanna buy more than one?  I mean, the consoles are cool but I have a tough time justifying army building this guy. :(

I personally think he's definitely a set-him-up-on-the-shelf-and-leave-him-there figure. No removable hat, no ball-jointed shoulders (OR elbows), and he's just a boring figure. I like neimoidians, just not their figure-form.
Yo is what yo is.

I love this figure, he's one of my favorites of the TSC line...

I think you underrated him Jesse. Although a paint wash would be good, his robes were pretty clean when he was on the Invisible Hand. And he has very detailed paint on his face. Just look at those eyes! Tell me those aren't detailed. He also has all of the stress lines and shadow on his face as well.

A removable officer miter would be cool, but I think it would look to poofy if made removable. Just look at Lott Dods miter.

Lushros is perfect for army building, as I counted about 4-5 Neimodian officers manning command consoles on the Invisible Hand bridge, and there are many seen in the CIS Mustafar Outpost.

I was thinking there were more guys in this outfit so you confirmed that for me Hunter...  I couldn't recall.  I'm thinking there's a lot in E1 too, and perhaps E2...

As far as a wash on the outfit, washes aren't always for wear and tear...  Case-in-point, the paintwash is a classic technique in model-making and miniatures gaming to not show wear so much as it is to highlight depth.  A slightly lighter or darker wash of paint on costume (like a lighter grey for instance) would highlight the depth of the sculpt in the robes by implication of shadow, which figures in the smaller scales don't catch real shadow very well due to their size.

SO I stand by my assertion on the paint...  Hasbro could've given the figure a bit more to slightly help compensate for the lacking mold toolings and such.

As the eyes go, they're good, but no more so than the usual 3 to 4-layered jobs Hasbro does for human figures and such.  Or other Neimoidians who have had similar paintjobs on the eyes.  That's not tos ay they aren't nice, but they're really a standard I expect...  It's the lack of paint elsewhere that I took away from on him though because there's a good sculpt lacking visually because of the paint aps there.

A good case in point of a wash and other paint aps improving to bring out a figure's details is the Imp. Scanner Tech from OTC...  The buff sculpt aside, the figure looks 100% improved upon simply by paint application.  The wash gives the figure depth, not a dirty look, highlights sculpt details, and then the head's repaint looks like almost a whole new sculpt.

A paint job can go a whole long way really.

I will say that I don't mind Lushros, he's just boring to me...  And $7's rough to take on a boring figure.  With a sale though I may look to do a little army building of him myself.  I can of course use the accessories quite gladly but more than that I now know the figure's a bit more abundant than just the one Captain...  That's cool to me and slightly (very slightly) improves my opinion of hte figure.

There are some in E1, CIS Captain Tey How is one of them.

He's basicly the same as Lushros save for a pair of power-goggles. There isn't any in E2, but no doubt there were some offscreen, perhaps on Geonosis.

Tey How was just who I had in mind...  Huh, I wonder if they'd make Tey How by just re-releasing Lushros with a slightly unique paintjob and snap-on goggles?  One of the easier jobs Hasbro would ever have to make extra scratch.

Actually, when I saw Lushros, I was wishing they had made Tey How.  I have been wanting him since the Ep1 line.   I'm fairly certain I vote for him on the JD Wishlist for TPM.   That definitely would be one resculpt I wouldn't mind seeing with just a simple new paintjob and removable goggle/mouthpiece.  Actually, in this case, I wouldn't even mind them being non-removable if they would just do him... another prequel figure that if Hasbro made, I would buy, since stated in another post, I am becoming more particular in what prequel figures I buy.

I was very happy with this figure.   Like Jesse, due to the character and sculpt, I was not disappointed with the articulation in this case.  Even though I am very happy with his paint application, I would be very interested in seeing this figure with a wash though.   Wonder if any customizers have attempted it.  I love the accessories that came with Lushros also.

Hi, new guy here. Great review of Lushros. I love Neimoidians and I wish Hasbro would make more of them. A sentiment that hasn't won me a lot of friends, let me tell you.

My only gripes with Lushros is you can't bend his elbows, only swivel them, and that his face doesn't actually resemble the character in the movie very much. The figure's facial sculpt far more closely resembles that of Lushros' cousin, Daultay, from Episode I. (I know most people seem to think the Neimoidians all look the same, but this isn't the case.)

Oh, and about Tey How, two things. First and formost, it's a female, and secondly, she wasn't the captain of the ship, Daultay Dofine was. Tey was just one of the ship's controllers. Personally I've never thought too much of Tey or the identical-looking Sil Unch from later in the movie, and I don't really understand why so many people want to see her/them made into an action figure before Daultay. However, Neimoidian fanboy that I am, I would of course welcome her were she made.
