Saw Girl with the Dragon Tatto tonight and I have to say that the opening sequence playing during the credits was probably the most disturbing thing I've seen.  Worse than some of the horror films I've seen.

But, I loved the movie.  Very interesting.  I haven't read the novels but after I'm done with the current trilogy I'm reading, I think check them out.

The official trailer for the Alien prequel Prometheus is set to premiere tomorrow.  It's great to have Ridley Scott involved with the Alien franchise again!  There are already some teasers up on YouTube.

The trailer for Prometheus is now online.  And it looks like we get to see some serious backstory to things we saw in the original Alien.

Very cool.  See no Xenomorphs, but there has to be something more...I'm sure.  Looks promising!

Well, it looks like they definitely visit LV-426, because it certainly looks like they find the wreckage of the alien ship that the crew of the Nostromo investigated.

Kinda of a short and less-than-epic trailer after a week's worth of hype.  I was expecting a full two minute job, not a teaser.

But maybe I've been spoiled by The Hobbit and Dark Knight and Titans...

We saw The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo today.  Great movie and much more faithful to the book than the Sweedish version from a couple of years ago.

We went to go see Mission Impossible last week. I loved it and thought it was the best one so far.  I was glad to see an MI movie were the plot was easy to follow.

Also, my wife got me to watch Black Swann last night because I bought the DVD for her for Christmas.  Pretty good movie and I can't even stand "artsy" type movies.

I haven't dug much past September other than what I see Brian listed so maybe I'm missing something but I generally think the top five films for 2011, in no particular order, will be:

Harry Potter
Transformers 3
Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn
Cars 2
Pirates of the Caribbean

Pretty good prognostications!  If Cars 2 wasn't so awful, you'd have hit it out of the park.

There's still a weekend left in 2011, and both Holmes and MI will likely break into the top 20 before they end their runs, but here's how things shaped up:

1Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2$381,011,219
2Transformers: Dark of the Moon$352,390,543
3The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1$273,445,000
4The Hangover Part II$254,464,305
5Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides$241,071,802
6Fast Five$209,837,675
7Cars 2$191,452,396
8Thor$181,030,624
9Rise of the Planet of the Apes$176,711,822
10Captain America: The First Avenger$176,654,505
11The Help$169,425,912
12Bridesmaids$169,106,725
13Kung Fu Panda 2$165,249,063
14X-Men: First Class$146,408,305
15Puss in Boots$143,935,000
16Rio$143,619,809
17The Smurfs$142,614,158
18Super 8$127,004,179
19Rango$123,257,581
20Horrible Bosses$117,538,559

International Box Office is always fun to compare/contrast.  BO total is in millions.

1Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2$1,328.1
2Transformers: Dark of the Moon$1,123.7
3Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides$1,043.9
4Kung Fu Panda 2$665.7
5The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1$654.4
6Fast Five$626.1
7The Hangover Part II$581.5
8The Smurfs$562.5
9Cars 2$551.9
10Rio$484.6
11Rise of the Planet of the Apes$481.2
12Thor$449.3
13Puss in Boots$391.3
14Captain America: The First Avenger$368.6
15X-Men: First Class$353.6
16Bridesmaids$288.4
17Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol$282.9
18Real Steel$276.7
19The Adventures of Tintin$274.9
20Super 8$259.9

That's THREE different BILLION DOLLAR films.

Thanks for posting those numbers Bill.  Amazing how different the international BO makes things in some cases too.  Always a few movies that will surprise you too (like The Help, Bridesmaids, and maybe Apes), but I think most figured that Potter and TF would be right at the top.  Of the Top 10, I think we've seen/rented 7 so far, and 15 of the 20 (domestic) overall.  Hope to see a couple other ones eventually too.  Any thoughts on next year's top earners?  Here's a few of the notable releases:

Beauty and the Beast 3D (Jan)
The Phantom Menace 3D (Feb)
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (Feb)
The Hunger Games (Mar)
Dr. Suess' The Lorax (Mar)
John Carter (Mar)
Wrath of the Titans (Mar)
Titanic 3D (Apr)
Avengers (May)
Men in Black 3 (May)
Snow White and the Huntsman (June)
Madagascar 3 (June)
Prometheus (June)
Jack the Giant Killer (June)
Brave (June)
G.I. Joe - Retaliation (June)
The Amazing Spider-Man (July)
Ice Age: Continental Drift (July)
The Dark Knight Rises (July)
The Bourne Legacy (Aug)
Finding Nemo 3D (Sept)
Frankenweenie (Oct)
Wreck it Ralph (Nov)
Skyfall (Nov)
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (Nov)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Dec)

I certainly didn't list every release, but tried to include kids' movies as those usually fill up some of the box office slots.  Personally, I'm most looking forward to five of those listed - The Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, The Hobbit, Dark Knight Rises, and maybe GI Joe (the trailer looked good anyway).  There will be others I see like Phantom Menace (my first 3D movie), and Twilight (wife is a fan), and some of the kids' stuff (Brave, Madagascar, etc.)  Should be a great year overall though, I know I'm really looking forward to it.  If I had to guess - this far out - what the Top 5 would be I guess I'd go:

1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. The Avengers
3. Amazing Spider-Man
4. The Hobbit
5. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt 2

Actually, although I'm really psyched about Spidey, it may be a bit of a wild card, and I could see it finishing fifth or lower as well.

Has anyone here seen Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy?  I think I'm going to check it out with some friends tonight.  I haven't heard much about it, but the critics's scores look good and the one preview I saw looked okay.  I'm trying to go into this one as dark as possible...

My dilema is that I want to see 3 movies that all open this weekend plus I kind of wanted to catch Contraband...then next weekend (1/27) is Man on a Ledge and The Grey.  That's way too much so I need to pick maybe 1 or 2 and until the last couple of days, Red Tails was not on the 1 or 2 list.  Now, I'm not sure.

I may try to catch it this weekend but if I do it probably won't be until Sunday afternoon some time.  I'm probably going to see Haywire Friday night.
