The only reason I go to RS is to check out that feature. I don't care about the size or how well it's displayed. I'll wager if I took pics of my current setup, it'd be the most disorganized mess you've ever seen.

RS, GH and JD pretty much mirror the same news whenever it comes out these days (I'm waiting for the JD post about the Wal Mart bonus pack to pop up on the front page any minute now).

Thanks, Josh, for discrediting my work.  I'll have you know that it was forum member Commander Cody that brought the bonus DVD to our attention, so I looked into it and didn't see it posted at any other of the bigger sites at that moment, including Rebelscum.  So it appears that it took me 5 minutes longer to create the newspost, but I busted my ass to look into this and confirm some of the details.

In just the same way that you say people shouldn't discredit other people's collections, I say you shouldn't discredit other people's efforts to report the news.  If you knew how many times we'd beaten RS to the bunch on breaking news, you'd swallow your ******* words.

I'd like to clarify that I didn't mean to imply that someone's collection wasn't worthy or worthwhile - what does drive me crazy is when people take no care in displaying collections... and this is just a personal preference.  Presentation and attention to detail is a big part of my work and my upbringing and seeing things haphazardly thrown together into a pile of odds and ends irks the retentaive side of me....

So there.

Personally I agree that it's not always worth frontpage news, whether it moves the front page or not.  I can't say our front page has ever sat any length of time with our current staff we have, and if it has it's been the same at other sites (who've maybe thrown some flimsy "news" together for their front page, which is fine, but I also know it's not our style to make **** up just to move a story).

The Collector's Collections stories are fine, but I know I never look at them myself (not my cup of tea to look at other people's rooms with any level of interest).  I also know I certainly wouldn't be interested in them if they weren't put together well either...  To that end I actually applaud Wise's display, it's nice.  But I have to say in the same vein that SOME collections just look "meh" posted on the front page...  be it due to the age of the collector, or his/her location.

Speaking from a vintage standpoint (my own), I wouldn't go gloating to Gus Lopez about how great my **** is because I know he'd look at it and be like, "meh, yeah, nice..." since I have much less and nothing he doesn't own in triplicate probably.  So am I a dickhole for saying "that's really not interesting to me" when I see something displayed haphazardly with a few common figures, some old micromachines stuff, etc.?  I don't think so, it's just not INTERESTING to me so I pass it over and I tend not to look at that as really impressing me on their front page (or anyone's, I just don't see it as a good reason to use front page space).  That's a matter of taste in how you run things though, that's all.

Personally I think anyone's collection is great in that it's what they have and are proud of, and it's good to be encouraging to all collectors of course.  But not everyone's stuff needs a "spotlight" shined down upon it "just to move the news along".  I feel that way about customizing, I feel that way about this hobby...  Hell, I feel that way about cars (how many times have you seen some POS someone's proud of and you are laughing in your mind at their "hard work" because all it is, ultimately, is a Honda Civic with a nice big wing and some stickers?  Right...  It's the same basic principle).  The basis for this topic has never been something that piqued my interests at their site though...  Kind of like Ebay specials and stuff.  It's generally always struck me as being as "empty" as posting nothing on your front page, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, I don't think I bitched about RS in general, or really ragged on people. I just stand by my opinion that a collection on the front page of a SW news site should be at least a little creative.

Hell, I'd rather see a handful of figures set up in such a way that shows a little imagination, rather than a bunch of odds and ends jammed into an old shelf. Again, just my opinion. It has nothing to do with Phillip Wise or any other part of RS except that section.

A collection can be anything... a collection of bottles of piss. It's still a collection and while you may not think it is all that much, it doesn't really matter what you think.

I'm damn proud of my collection of urine.  :-X

Scott's collection is great because he has the elusive "Yellow camouflaged Stormtrooper".

What's so great about that figure?

It was made exclusively to go with your urine collection.  Obviously Dale is jealous.

Jesus dude, don't get your panties in a knot.

Read my post again.  What I said was "RS, GH and JD pretty much mirror the same news whenever it comes out these days ".  I didn't say anyone did it BETTER, or that YOU did it WRONG. I was simply stating that if you're looking for news, you can get it at all the collecting sites, usually within minutes of each other.  I was speculating that that Wal Mart story (then the top story at RS) would be here in a matter of minutes, and sure enough.....there it is.

My point was....There's no one site that gets all "the scoops".  This is the internet, and information is instaneous. If one of them has the news, if it's any good then all of them have it within the hour.

I was in no way slandering your incredible reporting skills.....which I'm sure are considerable.  But if it makes you feel better, consider "My ******* words" eaten......because I never meant them that way to begin with.

Moving back to my point, all I was TRYING to say....is I don't go to the front page of RS just for news. I like to look at the polls, the little interviews or photo reviews...and yes, the collections.  Even though some aren't as impressive as others, I still enjoy seeing how people have their gear set up.  Yeah, when I see a picture of some guy's shelf with 6 things on it, that might bring a little chuckle out....but I sure as hell don't go tell the guy he sucks because he was kind enough to share it.  It's like when someone posts their picture here.  I don't jump into the thread and call them ugly.....even if they are.  And I thank most of you for refraining from doing so whenever you see my pictures.  I already know what a geek I am, and I'm fine with it. ;D

As for the "******" collections, hey....my collection looked like that at one time.

I remember when I had just 5 figures and that was it, because I couldn't find any more.  The only place I could find them was at comic shops, where they cost 15 bucks each, and I couldn't afford that kind of money.  So for the longest time, despite multiple trips to Wal Mart and Toys R Us, I had my Luke, Han, Stormtrooper, Vader and Lando proudly displayed on my wall.  I couldn't find my Leia, Ben, Yoda or the other "rare" guys ......so my "collection" was 5 figures thumb tacked to my bedroom wall next to a Star Wars poster I won with the balloon darts at the fair.   I didn't have ships (they cost too much). I didn't have 12" guys, because they were (gasp) 20 dollars.   I had my 5 figures, and to me, that was cool.

That's what I could afford at the time, and seeing collections like that today always make me think of the "early days" and smile.  These days I have a whole ******* room of my house devoted not just to Star Wars toys, but any other collection that strikes my fancy. I'm an opener, but I have so many toys now that there are hundreds of figures just WAITING for me to open them down there.

It's a long way from the 5 figures.

To see you guys acting like it's some sort of a travesty against the "news" to see these sorts of "beginners" collections.....I don't know, I see it as rather elitist.

Well, mine are always in a knot about something, aren't they?  ;D

Today it's the cause of defending these poor guys who post their pictures up and get slammed on by folks that think they're not "newsworthy".

BTW...I think JD should start up a collections section.  RS has been talking about doing it for years, why don't you guys beat them to the punch?  Make a forum where people can post and update pictures or something.  I'd love to see KBZs armies, as I know they put mine to shame.

Hell...maybe I'll post the half packaged, jumbled mess that is my collection room that I know will never be finished before I move again.  ;D

I think all of the ragging going on in here is pretty ******. While it may be stupid filler for RS to post every collection posted, I don't think anyone has the right to call someones collection stupid or not worthy. A collection can be anything... a collection of coins, a collection of trash, a collection of bottles of piss. It's still a collection and while you may not think it is all that much, it doesn't really matter what you think.

The original topic started off fine but quickly derailed into bitching about RebelScum (imagine that) and now a ****fest on fellow collector's collections. I'm actually kind of ashamed that this kind of crap is posted here.
Couldn't have said it better myself, Chris.

Again...

This thread was not intended to rip on people that don't have alot of SW figures. As I said several times before in this thread, everyone started somewhere. However, I wouldn't expect Road & Track to do a photo feature of my old Ford Escort from college on the front page of their website.

Nowhere in this thread did I rag on anyone, except my hypothetical example. I just think the news should be newsworthy. If that's elitist, then so be it. Obviously everyone's colllection is precious to them. If someone made their collection room look like the Mos Eisley Cantina, that would be newsworthy. If someone makes some mini dioramas for displaying their figures (as I mentioned before about CHEWIE and Daigo-Bah) that would be newsworthy. I just think a photo-feature on the front page of a news site should at least make you think "hey, that's pretty cool. I may have to try something like that!"

JD does it best, with a collections area in the forums. I hope that if JD ever runs collector's collections on the front page of the site, they be a little more selective than RS has been. Would you rather have visitors to your site look at the link to the Jedidefender Collectors' Collections (example) feature and think "Wow, these are always really cool. I wonder what they've found this time" or would you prefer "Meh, I think I'll go check out the Captain Typho fan club newsletter instead".

It just seems like quality over quantity is the way to go with these.
