Kubrick Newbies - Questions and Advice
« on: April 21, 2007, 02:55 PM »
Hi, guys! I thought you Kubrickaholics could help me out. I have seen pictures of a certain Admiral Ackbar, a certain Snaggletooth, and a certain Death Star Gunner over at yakface (well, and a certain yakface over at yakface!), and I've decided its time to begin getting me some of these!

But Ive never bought one ever before, so I cant begin to have any idea where to find them. I really really want to start collecting these, so Id really appreciate some help, JDers! Thanks.  8)

All you need to do is scope out some of the classifieds on this site, and you will find some in short order. It is good to understand the case ratios (take a look at the great checklist that Jessevader has put together) so you know which are harder to find than others.

Most of the kubrick boxes have had 3-4 figures that there are only one of out of 12. Other characters can be 3 or 4 out of 12. What that means is years down the road, with series 3 for instance, wicket and jawa are still $5 a figure, while Lando or 3-PO can set you back $30. The AT-AT driver can be even more.

Then there are the chase figures, which can be 2 per master case of 48 figures (1:24), 1 per master case of 48 figures(1:48), or 1 in every other (1:96). These start getting spendy. Although some of the 1:24 figures from the early sets are less expensive than some of the 1:12- it just depends on the desirability of the figure.

Check out the checklist, the classifieds, and completed auctions on ebay- With a little effort and luck they start to pile up in a hurry!

Dan didn't mention that these are largely an overseas thing too.  Relatively few US retailers carry them as they tend to be Japanese/Hong Kong exclusive in terms of distribution.  Most of us order them directly from HLJ.com or Robby.jp (requires membership) though I think BBTS is still selling them in the US.  Many folks hook up together with a pimp pusher supplier like Jeff to get upcoming stuff.

Basically you won't find them at retail, even less common places like Hot Topic or comic stores.

To Dan and Morgbug you listen, Robo-Quack! ;) And for a complete visual Kubrick guide, go no farther than JD's very own.

Although to be fair, I spent some time at Yakface today, and they have begun a very nice checklist themselves. I like the "check" feature- but it reminds me there are some I do not have, and some I probably never will, even with beer and ebay.

If you want to order online, just a few places in the US carry Kuby's:

Toytokyo.com

Drtonguestoys.com

Freebento.com

As mentioned, check the JD classifieds or eBay. Once you get one, you are hooked.  ;D

I used JD as a template, so this may help.
Its good to know ratios.
It might be best to buy past series by the series, try to get at least the basic six then the chase figures, I guess the same can be said for future series as well or you can buy a Master Case or a box of 12, but be aware (especially on ebay) when you buy boxes of 12, chances are that it will not have any chase figures in it because the boxes of 12 that had them have already been pulled from the case.
Most 1:48 (or 1:96) figures go for $100 or more.

Basic Series come in cases of 48.

As far as the 1:48 figures go...the pattern as of late is that you get one or the other in your case, not both! (This is for anyone new or anyone who has not paid attention! ) There was a pattern with certain series as far as which one you could expect in your case depending on if it was from Japan or Hong Kong, but as of late I think its been totally random.

As far as 2:48 or 3:48 Figures go...they will all be in the same box of 12 NOT spread throughout the case of 48.

Sandtrooper [White Pauldron] [4:48]CHASE NOTE: Not sure on the exact ratio on this, only that they would all be in the same box of 12 like the 2:48 & 3:48 figures.  So it seems that all 4 are in the same box of 12.  I got all orange in the box of 12 I bought.

Don't do it, Robo!! Don't give into the dark side of Kubricks!!

Where's Jeff? He's always trying to get me hooked... I think he's even trying to find a DS Gunner to tempting me into this habit hobby.  ;) Someday he'll catch me at a weak moment and bam... I'm screwed.

Ha!
I agree!
Once you start there is no going back.
I gave up on being a completest a long time ago, now I just keep a few cool ones, but I just can't stop cold turkey.

They truly are addicting, but they are hard to hell to track down (especially series 1 & parts of 2, Obi, Greedo, & Tusken). I'm not even going to get into hunting after the exclusives...too much time, too much money.

Hi,

I'm brand new to the forums and actually brand new to collecting star wars kubricks.  I'm really interested in collecting these kubricks and I've been trying to figure out a way to collect all of them.  I've been doing research and I've found it's pretty difficult to get them.  I know I can use ebay but does anyone have any advice on how to get these kubricks and where to start?  Should I buy them?  Can I trade for them and if so who do I contact?

I know ebay is a way but sometimes they get pretty pricey.

In particular I'm looking for the earlier series like Series 1 - 4.  As you know it's pretty hard to get these now.  But any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)  Thanks a lot.

Welcome eglew88!

If you go back to the main Kubrick thread, you will find a sub-thread titled Kubrick Newbies: Questions and Advice- It should be a good starting point!

Keep an eye on the classifieds section, I saw DSJ recently put some up, and I still have a sealed box of series 7 plus a basic set of 6 available. The early series are definately tough to get, but it really comes down to choices of what you want to collect. I pass on the sideshow and gentle giant items, and feel better dropping more dough on the kubricks myself.

This thread will probably get merged with the other, but welcome and good luck!
