It's great that he won.  But let's be honest, if he were alive, he probably wouldn't have won this.  No matter how good, you don't win individual awards for comic book or scifi/fantasy movies (exception; Don Ameche for Cocoon).

I'm not sure you are right here. I was pretty sure that when I finally saw the movie that Heath's performance would not be as good as the hype. I was wrong. He was that good and I think he still may have gotten that recognition alive or not.

It's always possible, but let's be honest, it's pretty damn rare.  ****, the Academy didn't even nominate Sean Astin for his role as Sam in the LOTR films and that was an incredible performance he put on for those three films.

Landau for "Ed Wood?"  Is that technically a sci-fi/fantasy movie?  Maybe.  I'll give you that, still, over the history of the award they're few and far between.

I was one of the people that thought, from the start, that Ledger's performance was worthy of an Oscar, but that didn't mean I thought he'd actually get it.  I think that if he were alive, there's a better than average chance the Academy would not have voted for him.  Maybe, but I doubut it.

So I just saw this the other night on HBO...  Very good film.

Just bumping this to basically show that I never get to see movies, and it depresses me. :(

I totally agree. I thought his performance was a good as Nickleson's Joker but Jack never got nonimated much less win.

How come Brandon Lee never got Best Actor for the Crow?  He died on set. Of course, it wasn't a suicide and people didn't think he was a good an "Actor" as Ledger. It all depends on how many friends you have in high places.

Nicholson was a good joker.  I thought Ledger was a great joker.

Plus Dark Knight was an infinitely better film than the original Batman with Nicholson.

Nicholson's Joker was good, but that film was more camp than Dark Knigt and as I said before, the Academy doesn't like those types of films.  Plus it was Nicholson, he'd already won 2 Oscar's by that point in time and it's possible the people doing the nominations just didn't feel the Joker was up to their standards for him.

Ledger had had some good roles but Joker was his breakout role.  That's his best stuff ever IMO.  Alive or dead that role should have gotten a nomination.

Brandon Lee.  Man, I still miss that guy.  Just because someone does a good film and then dies, or gets killed during filming as in Lee's case, it doesn't mean he or she should automatically get a nomination.  The Crow was a really great film but I don't know if any part of it was Oscar worthy.  Being the type of film it was, based on a comic, certainly didn't help it.

Besides, the Academy ****** up for the 1994 awards anyway.  That's the year they picked Forrest Gump over Shawshank Redemption.  I love Tom Hanks but, come on?  Really?  In a lot of other years, sure, but with Shawshank as a viable alternative?  Whatever.

Back to Brandon Lee.  He definitely could have gone on to great things but he never got a chance so we'll never know.  But he was excellent in The Crow and I have to think that it would have led him to some good roles.

Now that we're talking about The Crow, I'm going to have to watch that again, soon.  It also reminds me that I still have it on VHS and never upgraded to DVD.  Hmmm....  I think my geek cred may have just taken a hit.

I got so absorbed into The Crow back in the day.  Loved Brandon Lee's performance, but I agree - nothing was anywhere near Oscar worthy.  To this day I just get chills thinking about that movie not to mention the soundtrack which takes me back to a time.  It came at a very pivitol point in my life and brings back a lot of good/fantastic/negative points in my life...

Oh, and TDK was good too.  Rock on Heath   :)    Looking forward to the sequel - hopefully it will explain where your character wound up after hanging around at the end of the flick.

Nicholson was a good joker.  I thought Ledger was a great joker.

Plus Dark Knight was an infinitely better film than the original Batman with Nicholson.

This is how I feel about Dark Knight...  The film, overall, was fantastic...  It had emotional levels that are hard to create in "comic book" movies.  Spiderman's maybe the only film to capture that, but these new Batman movies are taking that to a whole new level as far as I'm concerned.  TDK was a very dark, moody flick, lots of sadness, lots of lows...

I liked Michael Keaton as Batman, and Nicholson as the Joker, and I thought they did some justice to the series and all, but the new Batman movies are simply miles better, and that's why they ultimately get the praise from even the academy for their level of quality.  It's amazing when you think about it really, that the Tim Burton movies were really accepted with open arms at first, and then the series trailed off of course, but they were pretty widely liked...  Still, they never were "that good".  Dark Knight was...  The last one wasn't quite this good, but Dark Knight was just disturbingly good I thought.  I liked it a whole lot.

I'd like to see them somehow find someone who can do the Ledger Joker justice...  Someone who's not likely to have a career beyond being the constant nuisance of the Joker, but who nails the Ledger performance perfectly.  They've got a long way to go with this series if they can keep all hte actors (and replace the one they need to) and keep going.

In 1994 the Academy should have chosen Pulp Fiction, then Shawshank, then Gump. But they are all great so it's hard to complain much.

The Academy usually makes bad decisions on best picture. Heck, they choose Annie Hall over Star Wars in 1977 for best picture. I can't stand Woody Allen and that overdone chick flick.

Of course Star Wars should have won the award, but with the academy the way it is we should probably just be happy it was nominated. And I don't like Woody Allen most of the time but Annie Hall is a great movie in my opinion.

I don't think I've ever seen a Woody Allen film.  Any of them.

Not really a Woody Allen film but I did see him in the original "Casino Royale" & of course a Woody Allen film "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask".   :D
