Galaxies: Who's in? Who's out? Who cares?
« on: June 21, 2003, 05:27 AM »
I personally am out for the time being...

I feel the specs are high enough that I don't want to bother trying to run it on my machine right now till I get a substantial upgrade...  It's not like it won't be there when I DO decide to wanna play it.

Also, no high speed internet = no online gaming...  at least not FUN online gaming.  So I'm sitting out the Galaxies deluge right now.

I've followed the game's developement somewhat, and I've known a handful of insiders on the Beta who were willing to dish the dirt to me as they learned/played the rough cut of it.

It's an interesting concept for those not knowledgeable of this type of game, and while other games in this genre are life-consuming, the developers of Galaxies I feel have tried to make it more accessible to the casual gamer...

Ya know, guys with girlfriends, jobs, wives, kids, and generally with something OTHER to do on occassion.  That's a plus I think.

I'm hearing criticism around the net about Galaxies though, and that's a shame considering the push this game's receiving.  It's early though, and the game's gonna have bugs in the beginning...

So what's everyone's thoughts?

Release is coming June 25th or 26th as I recall (Now I totally forget which it is, but no matter),  so who's all geared up to sit doe-eyed in front of a screen for several weeks?  And is anyone sayin' just fuggedaboudit till the vehicle expansion is released?   What species are ya pickin' if you are playing?  What job?  What political affiliation?

Hmmm, should be an interesting couple of weeks coming up I'd think, unless nobody's gonna play it. :)

I'm most definately in.  I've had this game preordered since last July!  Last November I had my new computer built so, I shouldn't have any problems running the game.  I'm excited, and ready to play, bugs and all.

On a side note, if anyone needs a good fun loving Player Association:

I really want to get this game, but I'm going to wait to see what everyone's reactions are about it before I buy it.  If I do end up buying it, you might not see me that much here anymore.   ;)

So, who here owns this now?  What are your thoughts about it?  I don't have it yet, because I'm waiting to hear what everyone thinks about it first.

Any further updates about this game?  I still haven't gotten it yet, because I want to hear what everyone thinks about it first.  I'm dying to hear some reviews about this.

Don't get this game!  You won't sleep, you won't eat.  You won't talk to your friends!  You will go to work, and sit on the internet at the SWG forums reading about the game.  You will think about what you are going to do on the game when you get home, so you can play for another 4 hours.  ahhhhh!

Needless to say, I'm addicted to the game quite heavily right now.  It is a lot of fun, character customization is great.  Lots to do, 1000's of playhours waiting for you.  It still has some bugs, the ones I've run into are very minor and don't affect my game play.  Some people have been having fairly major problems though.

If you do decide to get it, I would highly reccomend making sure your computer is well over the Min. specs.  I have a fairly up to date system, g4 4200 vid, 512 ram, amd 2200 processor, but, I'll still get some bad frame rates in the city.  I've been told by everyone that when I plug in my new stick of ram, that will be fixed.  This game is a big RAM eater, so, try to have 1 gig of RAM if you can.  Don't try it with 256 in any case...

Anyway, I'm signing up for a year long subscription.  I think that is the best review I can give.

Bushifox, thanks for the review you wrote.  I will probably buy this in a couple months after all the bugs are fixed.  I heard there are quite a number of problems with the game, so I will just wait until the game is perfected.

Here's another review about Star Wars Galaxies... click here.

I've played it the last two nights and I will have to admit that I don't know a DARN thing about what I am doing, what I am suppossed to be doing or how to Join the Empire or Rebellion.

Honestly, it seems way too difficult for me to get into so I will probably box it up and go to Game Stop...I bought the TIps book, I'll read that before I get out, but I just don't "Get it" I guess.  Of course I could play Galactic Battle Grounds for days on end, so it may just not be My TYPE of game.

Well I was talking to JediMAC tonight about my addiction to this, so I thought I'd better post. I've never been much of a PC gamer, much less an MMORPG type guy, so going into this a couple of days after launch I was a complete noob. A month later, I'm still playing, still hooked, still thinking about the next activities while I work, while I sleep, and when I'm with friends. It's utterly consuming once you get a handle on all the things that put a wall between a new player and those experienced with online RPGs like Everquest and Dark Ages. It took me a long, long time to learn, but I was fortunate to have a friend from work on the same server as me and get me up to speed quickly with slang and abbreviations (AFK, mobs, LD, god there's too many to deal with). I highly recommend any other new players that are like myself find someone to go into this with.

Once you have a grip on what you're doing, you're emmersed in a complete Star Wars world. You choose your race, your starting world, and a trade to take up. You can be a marksman, a scout, a brawler, and artisan, and other starting trades that then open up into more complex specializations, including Bounty Hunter, Commando, Smuggler, Dancers, Musicians, Armorsmiths, you name it. You can hunt Dewbacks on Tatooine or heal the injured as a medic in a hospital on Naboo. You can buy droids and pets. You can raid a Tusken fort (or die trying). You can visit Endor for some big game hunting. You can take missions for Jabba, Imperials, or the Rebellion. And that's just scratching the surface. I chose the brawler profession, beat a bunch of stuff up, and decided it wasn't for me, and took up rifles and pistols instead. Now I'm as master marksman, on my way to commando. Some day I'll be able to handle weapons able to down AT-ATs. Once I've felt I've seen enough battles, I may surrender my warring skills and take up tailoring, and make flightsuits for others. Its really a deep, deep experience and different for each player. Once you learn the game, and that takes time, and patience - in droves.

That's not to say its all good. It's buggy. A lot of features aren't yet implemented. Swoops, landspeeders, and animal mounts are promised within the next 6 months, although everyone thinks its more like 9. There's a space expansion planned within a year that will include space battles and allow players to own their own starships. A lot of the elite and specialist proffessions are flat out broken. I'm waiting on moving through Commando skills because, well, there's not a whole lot of fun in getting a special gun or skill that does less damage than a standard laser rifle. This will all be addressed in time, but it has to be said that as of today, the full potential and features that can happen in Galaxies has yet to be delivered.

This is highly recommended gaming. Even with its faults, the ability to essential become a living member of the Galactic Civil War era Star Wars universe is too amazing to pass by.

Anyone playing care to post what server they're on?

Awesome write-up SilverZed3!  I really, really want to get my hands on this game, but unfortunately I don't have the moolah to do so.  And by the time I have the money for it, hopefully all the bugs (or most of them) will be all fixed.

Ok I need some serious Galaxies help.

I got a mission from a guy that he wanted me to escort his friend from one city to the other.  I cross the great desert all the way to another CITY. (I guess I could have flown, but I am a Newbie to this type of game)  So anyway I get there, I meet the guy, start running back to the other city with this guy tagging along and of course some Rabid Gopher kills me DEAD.  Now I can't find the guy and I can' take on more than 1 mission at a time because of it.  I've gone to my data pad to activate the Waypoint, but it just sends me to the original guy who gave me the mission and he just yells at me.

So can I just "quit" a mission or cancel it or something.  Or how do I find the lost person I am suppossed to escort.

I'd hate to just start a new character, I finally got this guy  real close to where I want him headed and I have 60 Rebel Faction Points..which it took me forever to figure out how to do that.

If they would just make Close Combat:Galactic Civil War I'd be able to do alot better......But I want to give this a try.
