One of two things will happen here - one, you'll have to order a case online as the pegs will still be overflowing with Mutts come January or two, this wave will never see the light of day because of no retailer support.

I'm wondering what the retail situation will look like as this year ends and we get into 2009 as well.  Right now, around here, its pretty bleak.  Target and TRU have next to nothing (mostly Belloqs and Monkey Men last I checked), and Wal-Mart has tons and tons of the first two waves falling off the pegs.  The only Wave 3 figures I've been lucky enough to get (Grail Knight, Indy, Young Indy) was from HTS, and I keep checking for the rest of that wave.  From the looks of the "sold out" preorder for Wave 4 at BBTS (even with the super high prices), a lot of collectors are worried about these showing up at retail as well.  I wonder what we'll see in 2009 from the Indy line.

Well if the crying smiley didn't clearly indicate it, I'm in total agreement with Travis.  I just don't see this line making it, much as I want it too.  I really, really want it to and this assortment shows they've got a good handle on what should get made, but as with so many other toy lines they overestimate/gamble on the popularity of certain characters.  Worked with Maul, not with Mutt.

Up here we're crammed with everything and thus far the TLC wave hasn't made it to Canadian retail.  There's pretty much nothing I can't find that hasn't been released in the first couple of waves, even the Russian soldiers are easy to find.  The line never really got much prominent display other than at TRU and they don't look like they've restocked at all, though I hope that's not true.

It's why I snagged a box with ToD in it and if this makes it to pre-order at BBTS I'll jump on it there too.  I don't think the line has legs beyond collectors.

Yeah, I still don't the understand the strategy of packing Henry Sr. one per case.  He is a very memorable and well liked character.

Maybe this line would do a little better if Hasbro offered credit to retailers for shipping back a few characters, or at least just both versions of Mutt.

Great wave of figures. I just wish one of the figures in there had been a re-make of the Vintage Kenner Belloq figure in the tan slacks/white shirt that he wears for most of the movie.

Oh well, I guess they have to leave at least ONE vintage figure unmade.

You almost have to wonder the strategy of that. Obviously since the figures are so darn hard to find 'cause the pegs are clogged with KotCS and RotLA figures, I guess many of us are going to order by the case - I hope the online retailers get cases of this wave and all future waves with 2x of each figure. That way if you only want one set you can easily pair up with a like-minded collector and split the case.

Well, except you'd need two Toht figures, one for each head.  So they could overpack him.

But ya gotta know they'll repack Mutt and a KOTCS Indy in the box too.   :P

Are both heads available in the package or is it the type of thing where half of the Toht figures will have one head and the balance of figures made will have the other?

I guess you're right, I'll probably want a second Toht figure just to display with the melting head.

Since Hasbro has indicated that the Ark Spirit/Ghost will be something they want to work into the deluxe line, perhaps that will come with a Belloq on fire. Since Dietrich is also rumored for this wave, perhaps he'll come with an imploding head. So combining the deluxe figure set with the Toht and Dietrich figures will allow you to recreate the climax of the movie.

Could someone please explain to me why Hasbro is so dead set against releasing these five figures all together in a single box set and then selling it through HasbroToyShop.com, IndianaJonesShop.com, Diamond Distributors, etc...?

They seem to have no problem selling things like the Crimson Empire Crucible Set or the "Legend of the Saga" Set though limited channels.

Yes, I know that those two sets are all re-packs of figures previously made or "new-ish" figures that are replicated four times over in the same set, but we already know that Toht's body is ready for production. I find it hard to believe with the "six month" lead time that Hasbro keeps throwing up to us, that if Toht's body was tooled and they were able to produce those Cobra Commander figures, that the entire second wave of RotLA figures weren't already tooled.

So instead of having a negative ROI on the development efforts of this wave, why not pump out 10K - 20K sets of them, and sell them to those channels for say $40 with an MSRP of $55 - $60?

Simple answer -

2008 is done, and so is the Indy line of toys. 2009 is a new year and it is time to focus on new lines of toys and on the lines that don't sit on the hooks collecting dust like Indy did.

Wow. Thanks for the thoughtful response.

I suppose that the box set WOULD collect dust if it:

a) Were to be hung from a peg

and

b) Were to be sold in a store

Considering how hard it was to find Henry Sr., Elsa, & Vogle from the TOD wave in carded figures, but they appeared in the Box Sets at Target from when the movie was released and now a lot of those sets are going to clearance it is entirely possible that the set would sit for some time. Collectors would be big into it, but the average toy market would probably not be interested since there is nothing new for Indy at this time to drive the line fo toys.
