I'm getting more and more excited for this film.  Hopefully Fox doesn't **** it up.

So definitely no squid.  A bit disappointed in that, but I can deal with it.

Also looks like there's some backstory not in the comic - specifically Comedian killing JFK.  It was always implied that he was responsible, but never actually confirmed.

Looks like we get an answer on the 20th:

Judge Will Decide Jan 20th If Watchmen Can Be Released
Categories: News Chat | By John | 29

The drama surrounding the Watchmen movie is getting ready to hit it’s climax. As some of you may not know, Fox studios has taken legal action against Warner Bros to prevent WB from releasing the movie. The reason… WB made the movie they didn’t own all the rights too… turns out Fox owned the right (all or in part) and never gave their consent for WB to proceed with making the movie. Fox tried to communicate with WB about it, but apparently WB just ignored them until the movie was done and Fox had to go to court with it.

Recently the Judge ruled that Fox did indeed own rights in Watchmen. Now, WB and Fox have agreed to bypass the jury and allow for the judge in the matter to make a ruling on if Watchmen can be released in theaters or not March 6th. It doesn’t look good at the moment.

The judge is set to rule on the matter on January 20th. On that day, we’ll know if the Watchmen will or will not be released in theaters March 6th or not. This could take a while.

And once again, let me remind everyone that this is WB’s fault. Fox owned the rights. WB didn’t do enough due diligence to make sure they were allowed to make the film. Fox tried to talk to them about it but WB blew them off. Now we’re in this mess.

Warner Bros. asks for "Watchmen" call sooner

Quote
January 20 could be D-day in the "Watchmen" dispute between Fox and Warner Bros.

Or rather I-day, when the studios have agreed to let a judge decide whether to issue an injunction against the superhero film's scheduled March 6 release by Warner Bros.

But Warners is asking that the hearing be moved up to as early as Monday because "time is critical," the studio argues in papers filed this week. The studio must soon commit tens of millions of dollars in marketing for a film it isn't sure it can release.

If FOX still partially owns the rights from a long time ago (which is what the last judge ruled) it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference whether they passed on making it in 2005 or not.

Excellent.  Black Freighter is just about done.  My friend just spent the week in L.A. sitting in on the audio work and says it's really awesome.

I have never read the graphic novel and really know nothing about the film, but affter seeing the trailer in front of Gran Torino a few weeks back I think I'll probably want to go see this flick at some point.

Does anyone know if there is a good place to read the novel for free online?

Great news.  I'm already couting down to this film.

As for the graphic novel, check your local library, they'll probably have it.  But it's worth the investment, probably about $20 at your favorite book store or maybe even less in a back issue bin at your local comic shop.  It's the kind of GN that you need to spend some time with, it's pretty thick on content.
