OMG!!!  I don't know if Maradona can ever go home to Argentina after the way Germany just took the Argentine defense apart.

And then Spain - Paraguay this afternoon?  Wow.  I've never seen that many penalty kicks that close together in regulation time.  And then to have one PK goal being disallowed, and then two getting blocked?  Amazing soccer today.

And from what I've been reading the American TV ratings for this World Cup have been 40% higher than they were in 2006.  Good news for the world's most popular sport in the United States.

Yeah, because only 19.4 million people watched the U.S. team play Ghana.  And 14 million watched the U.S. play against England.  To put that in perspective, it's on par or better than NFL prime time regular season games.

And 140 watched any other match in the whole freaking tournament.  Most of them PVR'd the highlights.  ::)  It means they watched the home side because they're patriotic, they don't give a rat's fart about soccer.

BTW, did fox light up the ball so it was easier for U.S. fans to watch?   :-*

Ooh, ya got me Nick.  Broadcast in Spanish, the first language of the United States of America.  Yeah, Americans love that soccer stuff.

9.3 million Mexican's and Cuban's that are stateside does not equate to America loving soccer.  But you can keep telling yourself whatever you like.  M'kay?  ::)

When the spanish language broadcast of the World Cup in the U.S. rates better than the Stanley Cup finals (featuring 2 American teams), it seems to be a significant story.

Whooo hooo!  I finished in second.  I think I was in 6th at the start of, and part way through, the knock out stage.

I thought the Spain-Netherlands game was pretty good.  Though I was shocked by how many chances each team threw away (either by dribbling too much, flubbing shots, etc.).  I'm glad Spain won, they seemed to create more chances on their own.  As for the Dutch, boy they seem to play a style that is hard to like.  The seemed to flop an inordinate number of times, committed more than a couple aggregious fouls (De Jong's kick to the chest?), and seemed to lack a level of chemistry, particularly on defense (lots of finger pointing...).

If you actually believe your point to be relevant then you really don't understand how minor a sport the NHL is in the U.S. south of 40o latitude.  Canada is the country where hockey is popular.

Brent - how popular is American football in Canada?

Bigger than Canadian football maybe, but not nearly as popular as hockey.  The average audience for the Olympic hockey final was 16.6 million people (out of about 35M) with upwards of 80% of Canadians catching at least part of the game, or so the stats say.
