I saw it last night and really liked it.  I agree that Hunnam didn't show much range but I wasn't really there for the pilots, I was there for the gigantic mechs and monsters.

I disagree on Charlie Day and Ron Perlman, this builds on a lot of the Japanese Anime and Godzilla type movies and those always have that one character that's annoying but thrown in for humor...that was Day and Perlman (to a lesser extent).

I would have liked to have seen more of the other pilots also, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me.

That's a very good point. It's a nod to the genre. Also, you take those guys out and the movie is suddenly devoid of humor and levity. I think they needed those characters to keep some balance and not have the thing become too much of a robot-wankfest. (Not that there's anything wrong with that in my book)

Funny, for all the talk about Charlie Hunnan's range, it's Idris Elba's performances that always strike me as flat. Not just here but in The Office and Thor, etc. I guess The Wire buys you a lot of industry cred though.

I'm all for humor - but it needs to be kept in check.  The two researchers where just not in the same movie.  I actually really liked Charlie Day - except that he was about four measures too far over the top.  You can be funny without being slap-happy goofy ridiculous.  And Burn Gorman's character was just so, SO over-the-top awful... it's like he was out of an early 80's reanimation horror film.  I haven't seen that sort of over-acting in years.  Neither fit into the universe created here.

Due to excellent international box office numbers, a sequel to Pacific Rim is likely.

While there were glaring flaws, I loved when Pacific Rim worked.  Hopefully they'll write better human characters next time around.

Best news I've heard all week!

I actually went back again last night to catch this in IMAX 3D. Holy hell, it was awesome. The damn things practically leap out of the screen at you. Truly an immersive experience.

Not sure where they would go with a sequel, but as long as Del Toro is on board it's got to be amazing.

Awesome news!  Pacific Rim has grown on me since it's come to cable.  And I think it's going to take on a cult status.  I would definitely check out the sequel in the theater after having seen the first movie on tv.

Yes!!! Was just coming here to post this but did not catch the part about the animated series. Excellent.

With Guillermo back, this movie is in good hands. I'll definitely be there on opening night.

Hope NECA is still around by then to make more toys... ;D

I thought I read that there were going to be sequels a long time ago... or maybe it was just left open by the movie ending.  So it's official now?  Cool.

Godzilla would pimp slap everyone in PR, but I am digging this.  Kaiju are fun.
