What's spinning?
« on: October 31, 2003, 12:07 PM »
(Do you like that title?  "What's spinning?"  I thought that sounded at least somewhat original--I mean, GH has the "What are you listening to?" thread, and there's a "What's in your CD player?" thread at R-------m, and I think there might have even been one here before, too.  But what the hell.)

Now playing:  Aimee Mann, "Calling It Quits", from Bachelor No. 2.  Good stuff.

Any recent purchases worth noting?  Anything good coming up?

Are you like me?  Do you like the rock n' roll?  Yuh. . .  yuh got any gum?

Also making the adult rounds when I get the chance is the latest Natalie Merchant CD

She released this on her own, not sure how it is doing but it is some great stuff, her voice mezmerizes me for some reason

Got in Jimmy Page live w/ The Black Crowes  "Live at the Greek". 2 discs full of Zep Classics.   Also got in Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance.  One of the best and most underatted metal albums ever.  As far as new stuff, nothing has interested me in some time.

Looking forward to this too Scott.  My only complaint is there were so many great songs left off. :'(  Maybe there will be a followup at some point, or they will appear on a box set down the road.

Lost Dogs'll be cool, as will the Live at the Garden DVD set, also due that day.  PJ overload.

Next week's got the live Coldplay DVD/CD set, which should be great, as they're a great live band, in my opinion.

We'll also get, as I mentioned in the hotties thread, Afterglow, the first new album from Sarah McLachlan since 1997's Surfacing.  You can listen to it in it's entirety for free at www.Vh1.com right now, if you'd like.

There's also a box set of Johnny Cash material taken from all of his American Recordings sessions, over the past nine or ten years.  Five discs total, I believe--four discs of rarities, and one disc of "the best of" the four AR albums.

Comes out November 25th, and should be a fitting tribute to the Man in Black. . .

Right now I'm listening to the new Travis CD, 12 Memories, and Kathleen Edwards debut, Failer, which is absolutely incredible.  I'm really looking forward to the Johnny Cash set, as well as Coldplay.

Radiohead's 'Hail to the Thief'. It's taken me this long to finally get into its groove, and now I listen to it all the time.

I'm also looking forward to 'Lost Dogs'.

Beatles Anthology Volume One Disc One
Beatles Anthology Volume One Disc Two
Beatles Anthology Volume Two Disc One
Beatles Anthology Volume Two Disc Two
Beatles Anthology Volume Three Disc One
Beatles Anthology Volume Three Disc Two

Reminds me of somethin' else that's coming out here in a few weeks:

This is basically Let It Be as it was originally recorded, without all the crap that Phil Spector added in later.  Well, kinda.  They've also changed around the track-listing a little bit--gone are "Dig It" and "Maggie Mae", and added is "Don't Let Me Down".

Here's the track-listing for the new one:

1. Get Back
2. Dig A Pony
3. For You Blue
4. The Long And Winding Road
5. Two Of Us
6. I've Got A Feeling
7. One After 909
8. Don't Let Me Down
9. I Me Mine
10. Across The Universe
11. Let It Be

(And here's the original track-listing, for comparision:)

1. Two of Us
2. Dig a Pony
3. Across the Universe
4. I Me Mine
5. Dig It
6. Let It Be
7. Maggie Mae
8. I've Got a Feeling
9. One After 909
10. The Long and Winding Road
11. For You Blue
12. Get Back

And there's also a bonus disc included--I believe it's a DVD of vintage studio stuff--performances, recording, interviews, stuff like that--have no idea how long it is or anything.

Releases November 18.

Amazon page - $12.98

Between this and the DVD Anthology set released earlier this year, it's been a pretty good year for Beatles fans.

Currently, I have the Kill Bill soundtrack spinning.  Whenever possible, I try to skip past track 6 ("Ode To Oren Ishii" by The RZA, the only bunk part of the CD).  It's a shame they didn't include every single track from the movie though, particularly the song that plays when The Bride slices Sofie Fatale's arm off.
Binders full of astromechs...
