I wish there a few other titles in here, but still pretty cool.

Aww, hell--it's free.

It's not my favorite game they've got, but (Root Beer) Tapper I felt was the best one to play, at least control-wise.  I had some difficulty with a few of the others.

There's actually a new compilation disc out for all three consoles, Midway Arcade Treasures, I believe it's called, which features somewhere between 20 and 25 old arcade games--all of the ones on the site above, plus a bunch more.  Just as good--the price on it is only $20.  I need to pick it up for XBox here pretty soon.

I'll dig up a list of the titles for it in a sec.

You mean these?   ;)

Midway Arcade Treasures includes 24 games: Spy Hunter, Defender, Gauntlet, Joust, Paperboy, Rampage, Marble Madness, Robotron: 2084, Smash TV, Joust 2, Bubbles, RoadBlasters, Stargate (called Defender II in this and most other classic game packages for some mysterious reason), Moon Patrol, Blaster, Rampart, Sinistar, Super Sprint, 720, Toobin', Klax, Satan's Hollow, Vindicators, and Root Beer Tapper.

Cool stuff!  Atari just put a new collection out as well, with 80 games, including the regular 12 or so arcade games in their original collection from a couple years ago, along with most/all of their old Atari 2600 games as well.  Another must get for the vintage gaming afficionado!

Now give me something with good ol' Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. and I'll be a happy man!   8)

Yep--that's the one.  Thanks for saving me the trouble.  Although, from what I'm hearing, Moon Patrol isn't included--they couldn't procure the rights to it or something.

I have most of those games already, but they're spread out in various other compilations for the PlayStation and Dreamcast.  It'll be nice to have them all in one place.

And yeah, Stargate = Defender II.  I'm not exactly sure of the history there, but those names have always been interchangable.  Perhaps someone who's more familiar with the situation can shed some light on it. . .

For what system?  PC?  I heard recently that someone was doing a collection like that for the Game Boy Advance, but I want to say it was Activision, not Atari.

Oh, and there's also supposed to be an Intellivision compilation coming out soon, if it's not out already:  Intellivision Lives.  I haven't really been keeping up with it, since I never had an Intellivision, but I think it's got around sixty games on it or something.

Bah (not to the games--they're great--but to the company).  Nintendo's weird.

Nintendo though, did just release a Zelda Collection, consisting of the first two NES games, and the two N64 games.  You have to jump through hoops to get it, though, apparently--either by buying a GameCube with the disc included, or by buying a couple of new games on their list, and registering them on their website, or by ordering a subscription to Nintendo Power.  Of course, I'm not interested in any of those options, but I really want the disc, so I'll probably wind up ordering a subscription to that lame-ass magazine. . .

Yeah, that appears to be the case.  But I picked up another Midway game compilation for the PC several years back that DID have Moon Patrol on it (much to my wife's chagrin)...   ;D  One of my all-time favorite arcade games!   8)  I think there were six games total in that collection, including Defender and Joust amongst others.  I'll have to double check what else is on there, but since it had most of my Midway favorites it may render this new, more comprehensive, collection unncessary for me.  I'll see if I can dig up a link or pic somewhere for this collection.

I think it's only available for the various game consoles at this point, now that I think about it (at least 3 of them).  It just got released in the past week, and has been in a bunch of the recent ads.  Just saw it at Target today at lunch, and it does have the original 12 games that were included in the "Atari Anniversary Collection", plus a bunch more from the 2600 system.  Don't think there's any Activision games in it though, since as you mentioned, they recently released their own game collection earlier this year.

Yeah, this looks like a good one too!  Just came out in the last couple months, I think.  Seen it in the stores several times, but don't recall the details on it anymore.  Good number of games though!

Hope you're right about Nintendo possibly getting their act together and releasing some of the old stuff, 'cause DK and DK Jr. were probably my two all-time favorite arcade games, and I've been waiting years for those to come out!  I still get to play the real thing once or twice a year, since there's the most "bitchin'" 80's arcade in the world about an hour away in the local mountains, where we go up to our family's cabin from time to time.  EVERY single game you could possibly imagine from the entire classic gaming era.  It's absolute heaven, and I can hang out in there for MANY hours whenever we're up there for a visit.  This old man's still got it too, and can make a single quarter last for a good 30-40 minutes a game!   8)

Thanks.

when you typed "vintage gaming nerds", you really meant old people, right?? ;) ;D

man, if you guys want some classic arcade stuff, you gotta get mame (multi arcade machine emulator, or something)... i have over 300 classic roms for that thing, and i can sit here and play all day. it's kinda "bootleg" so there's no worries about liscensing, and who doesn't want to sell the rights to their games or any of that other bs that goes on. and the roms are the exact roms that were used back in the day in the big arcade boxes. graphics are 100% exact - just like they were back in the day.

i also noticed today that x-box is going to have an intellivision classics disc coming out - or it might be out already. that might be something i need to pick up...

Unfortunately, yeah.   :-[

Yeah, I've tried MAME before, a couple of years ago, and even got it to work one night, but I'm a computer moron, and I screwed it all up.  Oh well--cool stuff.

Sorry.  Guess the Atari compilation I was thinking of is only available in the PC format (see above).  I was apparently thinking of that new Midway collection that you just pointed out Matt...  Which is a very cool collection in it's own right, that I'd love to get on PC, to replace my two smaller game compilations mentioned above...

Here's the prior version of Intellivision Lives!, which was released for the PC about 5 years ago.  Looks like they just re-released it a couple weeks ago for the X-Box and PS2.

Over 50 games, including:
Auto Racing, Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Boxing, Football, Golf, Hockey, Skiing, Soccer, Tennis, Armor Battle, Sea Battle, Sub Hunt, Snafu, Triple Action, Frog Bog, Night Stalker, Sharp Shot, Shark! Shark!, Horse Racing, Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack, Las Vegas Roulette, Royal Dealer, Word Fun, Math Fun, Astrosmash, Space Armada, Space Battle, Space Hawk, Star Strike, Backgammon, Checkers, Reversi, Utopia, Vectron, Space Spartans, Buzz Bombers, Motocross, Pinball, Body Slam: Super Pro Wrestling, Chip Shot: Super Pro Golf, Hover Force, Learning Fun I, Learning Fun II, Mountain Madness: Super Pro Skiing, Slam Dunk: Super Pro Basketball, Slap Shot: Super Pro Hockey, Spiker!: Super Pro Volleyball, Stadium Mud Buggies, Super Pro Decathlon, Super Pro Football, Thunder Castle, Tower of Doom, and World Championship Baseball.

Intellivision Lives! also includes the following unreleased/prototype games: Adventure, Air Strike, Brickout!, Crazy Clones, Deep Pockets: Super Pro Pool and Billiards, Demo Cartridge, Duncan's Thin Ice, Go For The Gold, Grid Shock, Happy Holidays, Hypnotic Lights, King of the Mountain, Land Battle, Meteor, Minotaur, Number Jumble, Party Line (includes Hard Hat and Space Cadet), Super Soccer, and Takeover.

There was also an Intellivision Rocks! sequel released for the PC a couple years ago, with games made by Third Party licensees:

Games included:
Beamrider, The Dreadnaught Factor, Happy Trails, Pitfall!, River Raid, Stampede and Worm Womper, League of Light, Robot Rubble, Atlantis, Beauty & the Beast, Demon Attack, Dracula, Dragonfire, Fathom, Ice Trek, Microsurgeon, Nova Blast, Safecracker, Swords & Serpents, Tropical Trouble, Truckin', White Water, B-17 Bomber, Bomb Squad, Space Spartans, Magic Carousel, Melody Blaster, Mind Strike, Mr. Basic Meets Bits 'N Bytes, World Series Major League Baseball, Game Factory, Number Jumble, The Flintstones' Keyboard Fun, The Jetsons' Way With Words, and Scooby Doo's Maze Chase.

I don't have this collection yet, but would love to find it, as I definitely have fond memories of playing some of those games!   8)

This old man's still got it too, and can make a single quarter last for a good 30-40 minutes a game!   8)

So, next time I meet you we'll have to go head-to-head (or hand-to-hand, I should say) as I can make a quarter last a good, long time  :-*

Thanks for that post, Matt.  I've also heard that the book called Game Over, by David Sheff, is a really good one.  It's supposed to detail Nintendo's rise to dominance in the mid-80's.

There are a couple of other compilations for the PlayStation, in addition to the two you mentioned above, that I've got:

Midway Presents Arcade's Greatest Hits - The Atari Collection 1
  • Asteroids
  • Battlezone
  • Centipede
  • Missle Command
  • Super Breakout
  • Tempest

Midway Presents Arcade's Greatest Hits - The Atari Collection 2
  • Crystal Castles
  • Gauntlet
  • Marble Madness
  • Millipede
  • Road Blasters
  • Paperboy
Now, what's genius about this new Treasures compilation, is that they've added a couple of "new" games that aren't available anywhere else, but they've also left off at least one game from three of the four previous compilations!  Which means, if you're a tool like me, you have to buy the new compilation, just for the two or three games that you don't already have, while at the same time, you have to hold on to all the old compilations, just for Burger Time, for example, which isn't on the new one.

Now, for the PS2, there's also the Activision Anthology, which contains "Over 45 Radical Games", most of which are included in the Activision comp. listed above, but here are a few that the PC version doesn't have:

  • Beamrider
  • Bridge
  • Commando
  • Decathlon
  • Kabobber
  • Pitfall 2
  • Pressure Cooker
  • Private Eye
  • Robot Tank
  • Space Shuttle
  • Starmaster
  • Thwocker
Out of the two comps, it looks like the only game the PC version has that the PS2 one doesn't is Atlantis--so I would tend to think that the Anthology would be the better of the two Activision comps, at least until this supposed GBA version comes out.

Speaking of the upcoming Activision GBA comp, it includes all of the above games, plus the following (this coming from IGN, supposedly):

  • Baseball
  • Bloody Human Freeway
  • Climber 5
  • Okie Dokie
  • Oystron
  • Skateboardin'
  • Skeleton+
  • SpaceThreat Deluxe
  • Title Match
  • Tomcat F-14
  • Vault Assault
  • Venetian Blinds
  • Video Euchre
So, if all of those games are going to put onto one GBA game, well, I don't know what to say, other than that would just be the ultimate no-brainer and time-killer. . .
