Your Favorite Movie Comedy
« on: March 8, 2004, 05:01 PM »
My DVD collection is probably 75% Comedies right now ranging from classics such as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein to Tommy Boy and Dumb and Dumber.

What's your favorite Comedy of all time?

Here is AFI's top 100 of which their top 10 was:

1.    SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959)
2.    TOOTSIE (1982)
3.    DR. STRANGELOVE (1964)
4.    ANNIE HALL (1977)
5.    DUCK SOUP (1933)
6.    BLAZING SADDLES (1974)
7.    M*A*S*H (1970)
8.    IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934)
9.    THE GRADUATE (1967)
10.    AIRPLANE! (1980)

My personal top 10:

5. The Jerk Watched this for the first time in a few years this weekend, it really is one of the best movies ever made and is so full of classic lines "I was born a poor black child in Mississippi"
4. Caddyshack Bill Murray and Chevy Chase are great...perfect for where they were in the early 80's...but the true star of the show and one of the reasons why Caddyshack 2 was soooo horrible, Rodney Dangerfield was simply sublime.
3. Kingpin I don't think I have ever laughed harder in a theater than when me and my two buddies went and saw this at a matinee.
2. Vacation Classic flick, classic scenes, classic babes, classic all around.  Start singing Holiday Road and you immediately start to smile
1. This is Spinal Tap One of my all time favorite movies regardless of the genre, the outtakes on the DVD are almost as good as the rest of the movie.  The Stonehenge bit had me literally rolling on the floor when I first saw it.

Marti: May I ask, what is that?
Nigel: Well, it's a trilogy of music I'm composing.
Marti: It's quite a step from what you're doing in the band.
Nigel: Well, I'm experimenting with different keys, and I found D-minor to be the saddest key. And it goes like this [starts playing] dah, dah, dah, dah.
Marti: It's really quite beautiful.
Nigel: Well, it's... it's like a combination of Mozart and Bach... it's like.. like a "Mach" piece.
Marti: What's it called?
Nigel: This piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".
Marti: Oh.

I would have to add Christmas Vacation.  That movie was hillarious.  I still remember Cousin Eddie showing up bragging about his sons new career.  Clark asks him about college and he responds no, the Carnival ;D

LOL

There are a lot of good comedies.  Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy would have to be up there for me.

"The new phonebook is here! The new phonebook is here!"

Wow, can't believe Airplane! made the list. Not that I disagree, but the AFI list otherwise looks like it was made by a group of 50 year olds.

My list would be:

Big Lebowski
Airplane!
Happy Gilmore
Blues Brothers
Animal House
Kentucky Fried Movie

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch.

Caddyshack
Arthur
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
and from the 60s (showing my age here)
Those Magnificent Young Men in Their Flying Machines
The Great Race

I laugh so hard during those last two in some parts.
Back when they could write original comedy and not rehashes.

Vacation: A classic! I've seen it so much, it rightfully shouldn't still be so darn funny!

Blazzing Sadles: What isn't to like about BS (zing! umm, well,  maybe not...) it's fuuny, original, and memorable.

History Of The World: Another classic, as a history buff, I really enjoy this movie. And the inqusition sequence is one of the funniest movie moments ever, imo.

Office Space: 'nuff said, damn hilarious.

EuroTrip: For a Roadtrip knockoff it was pretty entertaining.

Little Nicky: One of the few Adam Sandler movies I like, other than the Water Boy and Big Daddy.

And thats all I can think of at the moment.

Howard the Duck.  That was a comedy, wasn't it?  I had a major thing for Lea Thompson at the time it came out so a buddy and I went.  We laughed the whole time.  We might be the only two people in the world that did, but I'm still waiting for it to come out on DVD.

Porky's/The Meaning of Life - right around the same era and both full of juvenile humour.  It's probably a reflection of that time in my life when everything was funny.

Blazing Saddles was a classic.  Farting around a campfire became a new pastime.

Happy Gilmore was quite entertaining.  I loved it when Bob Barker beat the snot out of Happy.

Spinal Tap was indeed priceless.  We rented it as a video back in the dark ages of video, might even have on the wrong format ;) (Beta).  Our group at that time was a mix of headbangers and 'preppies'.  We (the bangers) laughed so hard we nearly peed.  The preps didn't get it. ;D

Arsenic and Old Lace has special meaning to me.  It is a pretty good movie to watch to this day (1944).  That was the only school play I acted in.  Me and Karloff, whoulda thunk it.  BTW Matt~1, you wanna know what I look like, rent that movie.   ;)

Um.  Where are the Stooge movies :-\
Minivans: a sign of the apocalypse.
