It's the grading of loose figures. People are paying ridiculous amounts of money for an AFA loose graded figure and mos tof the figures are common. The seller, a member of RS sold some AFA loose figures awhile back.

AFA-graded uncirculated loose figures

Whoa, I'll give that picture an AFA U95.  :D

Who's markpoon?  I saw comments from you guys regarding the Vlix figure and he has another one up.  What's the deal?

All I know about markpoon is that he makes fakes or custom carded figures such as 21 back boba fetts that are really good.

Yeah, markpoon is known for making custom 21 back Fetts, a lot of flack from the vinty guys from RS. Don't blame them as he was making them without any marking that they were fake.

He was also looking for exact measurements for a Vlix awhile back too. I say he has a mold for a Vlix.

You can check his stuff out in his photo album.

So is there anything inherently wrong with his Vlix fakes?  Not like I'll ever own a real one and his fakes look pretty good.  He's spreading them out in terms of sales, only one every couple of weeks, but it might not be a bad piece to have.

I believe it is irresponsible to make high quality fakes without any markings to distinguish them from the real thing.

Many people do not agree with me, but I am thinking in terms of what's best for the hobby.
Someone, somewhere down the line will try and sell one of these fakes as a legit piece.  It has already happened with m. poon's Fetts.
The fact that Mark himself isn't ripping people off does not make him immune to criticism.

Collectors will get ripped off because of these items, and that is not good for the hobby.

Thanks Andy, that's an excellent point.  And if indeed the Vlix copies are of sufficient quality then absolutely someone's going to try and pass it off.

Would I be right in inferring that your position then is by supporting MP (if say I bought one of his Vlix figs) we are implicitly supporting the production of fakes since there is no way of marking them.  That's a reasonable stance.

I'd just like to own a Vlix reproduction is all.

I think if the fakes could be marked, such as molding REPRO into the bottom of the foot, it would make a lot of people feel better about them.  Just a guess from a not-yet-vintage-collector.

it's been my observation, that even marking these repro items as such, hasn't helped to prevent someone selling them as legit. someone just has to forget to mention in an ebay auction that an item which is a repro, but looks so close to the real thing that an average collector wouldn';t notice the difference, isn't a repro and the damage is done. one of the many reasons I'm against the selling of customs/repros in general, it's just not going to end well most of the time....
