AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes
« on: November 18, 2004, 02:48 PM »
The American Film Institute has announced its next "100" list will be the top 100 movie quotes.  You can download/view a PDF file detailing 400 eligible quotes via their site, lots of good ones contained within.  Looks like 4 quotes from our beloved Original Trilogy have made the initial cut:

"May the Force Be With You" - Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Star Wars, 1977

"Help Me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're My Only Hope" - Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) Star Wars, 1977

"I Am Your Father" - Darth Vader (James Earl Jones), The Empire Strikes Back, 1980

"Do, or Do Not.  There is No Try" - Yoda (Frank Oz), The Empire Strikes Back, 1980

Nice to see the trilogy represented well.  A lot of other classics included on the list, as well as some you wouldn't expect.  I would sure think at least 1 or 2 of these would make the final 100.  Oh, and where is the following quote?

"Yippee" - Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), The Phantom Menace, 1999. [/sarcasm]

Actually, as bad as some SW fans feel TPM was, there actually was one notable quote in it:

"I'm a person and my name is Anakin."

It really sets up the persona on both characters, the Queen who had led a sheltered life until that point, and the slave who reminded her that people are more than items.

...I thought that line was horrible - but maybe just because of the delivery? I don't know.

"Whipe them out.... All of them."

Was my favorite, I think.

We ended up watching most of this show last night, always kind of enjoy "movie-type" stuff like that.  I agree with Scott, the Top 10 does look pretty good overall.  Lots of good quotes on the entire list, some that you wouldn't even think of.  I guess I really expected the "I am your father" line to be in there somewhere though.

Random thoughts on this list:

-Somewhere online, a similar list was done (maybe Empire?) and one of the top quotes which (although I may have overlooked it) was not included on this list baffled me:  "My name is Inigo Montoya.  You killed my father.  Prepare to die."

-"Luke, I am your father" and "Play it again, Sam" (both of which are not included on the list) are the two most misquoted lines in movie history.  The actual quotes are, of course, "No, I am your father" and "Play it Sam."

-My personal wishes for the list ("I have to return some video tapes"; "It's not that I'm lazy; It's just that I don't care") are nowhere on it.

I find it odd that the most quotable movies in history ("The Princess Bride", "Office Space", "Scarface", and "Pulp Fiction") are either omitted entirely or they are severely underrepresented.  Maybe it's just me, but every time *I* see Jennifer Aniston, I say, "She ****** Lumberg?"

I was giddy to see the Dr. Strangelove and Soylent Green quotes show up though.

My wife was getting annoyed with me because half the time, as soon as the movie apeared on screen, I would guess the quote. However, at the end of of the "Love never means having to say you're sorry" clip with the audio bleed of Appocalypse Now, I said "I love the smell of nepalm in the morning" before the first AN image appeared. When they revealed the the quote, she called me a freak. Actually, she yelled it.

What about Jurassic Park? Hmm? I could think of 100 lines from that movie that could work. "Life finds a way." Hmm? Well...screw the AFI.
