DC Direct Figures
« on: December 2, 2004, 08:48 AM »
I didn't see a thread for this company/line yet, so thought I'd start one.  I really know very little about the line, but I did pick up my first ever DC Direct figure yesterday (via the mail).  I got the JLA Superman.  It basically looks like this version (although the picture here is "technically" the Superman from the original Superman group of figures.  The one I purchased came with the American flag, and did not have the "angry" face variant that showed up in the JLA line from what I understand.  Anyways..looks like this:

I've always been a Superman fan, and from what I have seen and read, this was the best action figure of the character that we've seen so far.  I got it via Tower Records.com, if anyone is interested.  Although the articulation isn't too bad on this particular figure, it (along with the rest of the line) is lacking when compared to Marvel Legends.  However, I have to admit that the figure itself looks great.  The sculpt, paint applications and pose really make for a nice looking Supes.  Looking at the back of the card, the rest of the JLA figures are a little bit tempting as well.  Much of DC Direct's product has been tempting to me over the past year or so, but I've stayed away mostly due to price and availability.  Anyways, do any of you collect anything from DC Direct, any comments on what you have (or would like to have)?

You have no idea how many times I've thought about diving in this line...both with those JLA figures AND with the Super Friends 2 packs that came out a couple of years ago

I think I asked some of the guys at GH who are more in to DC figures but I think it would be cool to collect Comic Likenesses of the Super Friends that have been made so I could display them with my Marvel Legends.  This is because most of my DC love is due to that show (never really read any of those comics) Cartoon based figures wouldn't do for this since I would like them to look like Legends

I almost bought those JLA figures a couple of times but just have never pulled the trigger...and I wouldn't necessarily need some of those B-Listers of the Super Friends, probably just:

Superman
Wonder Woman
Batman
Flash
Green Lantern (old school)
Hawkman
Robin
Aquaman

And from the Legion of Doom:

Lex Luthor
Riddler
Solomon Grundy
Bizzaro
Braniac
Sinestro
Scarecrow
Captain Cold
Black Manta

The other option would be to collect Modern Equivalents of the Super Powers figures which I never owned but played with many times at my buddies house...uh Brian, don't tempt me like this :)

I know what you mean Scott, I've been tempted by pretty much the same figures you had mentioned.  I grew up on "SuperFriends" and also watch the new Justice League (now "Unlimited") show, and that is where I really know the majority of the DC characters from.  I grew up reading Superman and Batman comics, so those are givens with me, but the rest of the JLA line is tempting to me as well.  Here's some tempting pictures :P, isn't it better to dive into a line with a friend Scott? :D Just kidding.

More (and larger) pics at the DC Direct page if anyone is interested.  I figured I littered this thread with enough pics already :).

One thing holding me back:  The price of Hawkman, he only came in a two pack and that goes for $80+, no way

You can pick up a set of those JLA figures pretty cheaply (around $50) which isn't too shabby, I don't know who that Green Lantern is, I'd get the classic Hal Jordan Version though (which is new isn't it?)

I forgot I'd also want a Penguin and Joker too...

Super Powers Line

Of those I'd buy DC Direct Versions of:

1. Superman
2. Green Lantern
3. The Flash
4. Batman
5. Robin
6. Hawkman
7. Aquaman
8. Wonder Woman
9. Red Tornado
10. Martian Manhunter
11. Firestorm
12. Green Arrow
14. Darkseid
15. Lex Luthor
16. Brainiac
17. The Joker
18. The Penguin
24. Shazam!
25. Cyborg
29. Samurai
31. Plastic Man
32. Mr. Freeze

I'd Skip:

13. Dr. Fate
19. Steppenwolf
20. Kalibak
21. Parademon
22. Desaad
23. Mantis
26. Golden Pharoah
27. Cyclotron
28. Orion
30. Mister Miracle
33. Tyr

That's only 22...OK shutting up now...

DC has always been tempting to me too, but the relative lack of articulation to go with the ML stuff keeps me away.  There are some really nice pieces out there, but I don't need something else to collect, do I?

I was into DC comics.  When I was actively buying comics, I bought all the Batman titles, Superman, Green Lantern, Catwoman and then whatever caught my eye.  Prior to that we read a ton of comics at my cousin's cottage at the lake when it rained.  So I was a big fan of Aquaman, Hawkman, Shazam, Green Arrow and others at the time.  In fact, most of the comics were DC rather than Marvel in my youth, with the exception of Spiderman comics.  Still, when I got older, I was much more into Marvel and remain much more a fan of that company's characters.

I of course delved into the Batman line and they are nice.  I was tempted by the Red Arrow figure at toyfare and now I'm tempted by the Green Lantern (Hal Jordan was always my favorite) they have available.  But then again there are lots of toys I find tempting out there, but have to force myself to stay away from.  Room and reality dictate that necessity.

I bought the Hush figures and the 'angry' JLA Superman, but that's all I have. I will pick up the next two series of Hush figures, and I'm thinking about the rest of the JLA figures too.

I never was much for DC besides Batman and JLA. I do love the Superman and Batman movies, though, and, like Scott, I loved the Super Friends cartoon, though for my age group, Super Powers.

Same here. I wish they'd rip ML and do a nice super-articulated Superman and Batman two pack... The prices that I've seen for these things are too high for me to even take a second glance, which is really my main complaint with DCD.

Thanks for the link there Scott, I was looking at that last week too....and it makes it even more tempting.  I'm happy with my Supes for now, but it sure would be nice to have some more of those Justice League members.  Nice looking figures, especially all grouped together like that.

Prices are a bit high, but they seem to have come down in the last few months.  I've been eyeing them for a while, and only recently picked up a few (starting with the Hush Batman).  I'm a big ML fan, but I have to say that I actually prefer the dc direct stuff.  Sure they're not as articulated, but in many ways I think that's a positive thing.  More and more it seems to me that the articulation of the ML line is really detracting from the sculpt.  I would rather have a figure with less articulation that looks great.

The bitch about Marvel Legends is the toys are overengineered to uselessness. I've found with the DCD toys I own that they have articualtion well enough for the character represented. That's all one needs to ask. There's little point in 45 points of articulation when some joints don't stay in place or move at all. :-\

Up until recently I only bought a few of the DCD figures that I liked and could get for 10$ or less. I was able to get Cyborg, Starfire, Modern Starman, Wonder Woman & Wionder Girl and Kid Flash. As you can tell I'm a Titans fan. Sometime a go I was at a Collectiables show where they had the box sets of Batman & Robin, Superboy & Supergirl and Joker & Batgirl for 25$ each. I couldn't pass them up. Since then I've found my self buying more and more. I picked up the Golden Age reen Arrow & Speedy for 10$ and just recently bought the Alex Ross figures for 10$ each and the Penguin & Catwoman, Superman & Lois Lane sets for 20$ each. I also bought the modern Teen Titans figures and the Green Lantern figures, but I paid full price for them.
I'm looking foward to more of the Titans, Lantern and Ross JLA as well as the Crisis on Infinite Earth series.
I completely agree with you inadvertent imitation and drewlam, although I wouldn't mind a little more articulation in the Dc figures I think they look more like their counterparts then do the ML figures. I can barely get some of the ML's to stand due to loose joints.

Well, I caved in and ended up picking up a DC Direct Kilowog for two reasons.

1) I decided my GL Line Up wasn't complete without him
and
2) I heard about this guy at SDCC:

As a Looooooooong time fan of Green Lantern, I can't believe that I finally will have a shelf with action figures of my top 3 favorite GLs - Tomar Re, Kilowog, and Salakk.  It's like I just won the Green Lantern Lottery or something.   ;D

I guess I'll just have to start wishing for a few more now... how about Katma Tui to go with John Stewart!

Congrats on the pickup Jeff, I could definitely seeing a big GL fan like yourself wanting Kilowog.  DC Direct continues to put some really neat stuff, and I'm always tempted to get a few more figures here and there.  I'm tempted to get into some of the Superman stuff further, and I'd also like to pick up the JLA Flash figure (and maybe, eventually, the rest of the JLA).  Too much spending elsewhere right now, but hopefully eventually I can get to these.  Pretty nice looking stuff overall it seems, I know I'm quite happy with the Superman figure I have here on my desk :).
