What was the first album you remember buying?
« on: December 4, 2004, 09:54 PM »
So, I was looking through my cd collection today, and it got me thinking.... what was the first album I ever bought? And when I say album, I'm talking real vinyl here. Yeah, I'm a dinosaur, blah blah blah... but when I got into music there was nothing better than good 'ol vinyl. Sure, I had a cassette player, and an 8 track that was the old man's, but you couldn't beat vinyl back then. But if you never bought music on vinyl, what was the first CD you bought? Or if you bought both, what did you buy?

That said, the first album I ever bought was Destroyer by KISS - 1976. Still one of my all time favorite albums, and my favorite KISS album by far. Well, technically I didn't buy it, 'cause I was 6, but I asked for it to be bought for me. And I listened to it constantly. I think even my parents started knowing the words to some of the tracks, just from repition.

Skipping ahead a few years, the first actual CD I bought was an album by metal band VoiVod called Nothingface - back in 1989. Hearing a CD for the first time really opened my eyes to the true nature of music. It was an amazing difference in quality from vinyl and cassette tape.

So what did you guys buy?

I've never owned a record in my life, and couldn't begin to tell you the first cassette I bought, but I'm 100% certain this is the first CD I ever bought:

729 CD's later, I'm still buying 'em.

In my lifetime, I've only bought one vinyl, it was the 45rpm single of.... The Chicago Bears doing the Super Bowl Shuffle.

The first album I ever bought , via CD would be AC/DC's Live.

The first album I ever owned (can I call a cassette an "album") was, inexplicably, Billy Joel's "An Innocent Man."

It was the year that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" came out, and was the must have thing.  So naturally, my mother bought it for my big brother.

And I can just see her, with her big early 80's afro, talking to the dumbass at Sam Goody:

My Mom:  Well, if I get this hot new Michael Jackson tape for my oldest boy, I should probably get something for his little brother.

Sam Goody Dumbass:  Hmm.  Yeah.  How old is he?

My Mom: Seven.

Sam Goody Dumbass: AH!  I have just the thing.  All the seven year-olds are really into this shlumpy, balding has been piano rocker Billy Joel.  "An Innocent Man" is hot.  White hot.

My Mom:  Great!  I'll take it.

Billy friggin' Joel.

The first album I ever bought with my own money was Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party."  After that, I signed up for Columbia House and got a bunch of Depeche Mode, New Order, and INXS stuff.

The first album that seriously changed my life, however, was Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Mother's Milk."

Screw Billy Joel.

Weird Al Yankovich:  Dare to be Stupid

Yup, my first album I ever bought.  I did have some records bought for me to play on my mother's record player.  A PAC Man record, some Star Wars and Joe Records, and a Rolling Stone 45.  :P

The first album I bought for myself.
I'm not sure if it's Metallica's Black album or Pearl Jam's Ten, in 1991 or 1992. Only they were CDs. The first LP I bought was KISS MTV Unplugged, around 1996.

I bought three albums (vinyl) at the same time:
the Police "Ghost in the Machine", and "Sychronicity" along w/ Rick Springfield's "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet".
The Bear's single isn't that bad... of course, I had a single 45 of "Pac-Man Fever"...  ::)

Hey Jess, no big deal, it was the 80's!! I mean who here who was old enough to get it then, did not have Culture Club?? They were popular!!

I don't think anyone can say anything to anyone about music, we all have liked some groups that have had their share of criticism. I mean who here did not like Vanilla Ice when he came out??? I know I had his album, hell everyone in America did!!!  ;D
