How do you goof off in your spare time?
« on: February 16, 2005, 11:16 AM »
I used to play video games, or watch a movie... but lately it's turned into watching FOX news and customizing.  What a boring way to spend 2-3 evenings per week!  Ha!  But I love it.

I have no spare time.

I have come to realize that my entire life revolves around either work or my family.  It's a vicious circle.  I work to support my family, and by working I hardly ever see them.

Typical weekday:
Wake up at 6 am..get kids ready for school
8 am - get kids to school
9 am - get to work.. sometimes have a 1/2 hour lunch
6 pm - done with first part of work
6-10 pm - work second shift at same job - just different work
11 pm - get home - most everyone in bed
3 am - get to bed

I also work Saturdays and Sundays.
This week I actually did get 3 hours for myself.  Bought a new five shelf bookcase and was able to unpack some figs.  Beyond that I am usually not selfish enough to have "down time"

Oh man - you are one busy person...

My typical week day -

7:30am - get up
9:00am - get to work
6:00pm - get home, goof off or do work around the house for the wife
midnight - go to bed

Lately its been video games, movies or working on my Jabba's palace diorama. I try to rotate so I don't get bored with any of them. I also work on freelance design stuff or go out with my buddies, play sabaac and skeez on the tonnika sisters!  ;)

Video games, which I've taken a greater interest in lately
movies/ TV/ internet- good ways to waste time
writing- something of a hobby
collecting, which I'm beginning to reevaluate my future in.

Net.  I'm addicted to the Net.

My days are as follows:
M-F:
up at 7:00, off to work by 7:30.
8:30 get to work, eat lunch at desk while working (or screwing around here)
4:30-5:00 leave work, drive home
6:00 get home, eat supper
8:00 put kid to bed, read or play with GameBoy
8:00-10:00 hang out with wife, she goes to bed at 10:00
1:00 am go to bed

Weekends are cool, mostly spent with the fam-damily.  My daughter has dance class on Saturday morning, take her there, go work out while she's in class.  Monday nights she has swimming lessons.  We usually go skating on Saturday and or Sunday and sometimes once during the week in the evening.

Play basketball a couple of nights a week too, usually Wednesday and Thursday night (game and practice).  Work out other nights where and when I can.  TV?  What's that?

I like my life :)

There's nothing selfish about having down-time.  Everyone should have at least a little bit.

It's good for you.

Nah, I don't drink nearly as much as say, a pharmacist.  I usually get a weekend night to head out with buddies, if not every week, then once every two weeks.  A pretty good deal to me.  So I drink mostly on Saturday or Friday night, if I do.  I'll have beer when I'm cooking too - one for the pot, two for me.  Usually go out for beer(s) after basketball practice too, so I'm not hurting (other than from the pain of exercise).

Stuff I do in my "selfish" spare time (:P):

- Hanging out at JediDefender.com
- work on SW custom figures
- goof around in the garage on side projects (woodworking, building junk)
- video games

There is a good chance that if the wife is out and I've got nothing left on the "Honey-Do" list, I'll probably be doing one of the things on that list...  ;)

Yeah, the 'honey-do' list.  It's a pain, but my wife does a ton around the house, so I shouldn't complain.  Bathrooms are my responsibility, as is laundry.  But I like doing laundry, I can be online 90% of the time and still claim to be doing some work :P

During the winter, I'll admit, I'm pretty lazy.  Usually watch TV or a movie.  There's some psychological thing when you leave for work, it's dark and when you leave work, it's dark. Thankfully the days are getting longer now.

Summer time, it's softball.  Usually 2 or 3 games a week.  Season lasts from early May to late September.  Enjoy playing, but it does start to wear on you.  That may have something to do with all the beer we drink.  Our team has been known to kill two 30-packs after a game.

After the kid is born, I imagine most of my "spare time" (if you can call it that) will be with him/her.
Common sense isn't so common

Well, since there's no hockey this year, I've been pretty sports free except for football... can't wait for Cardinals baseball...

Doing this. Small breaks throughout my workday that I roam the Internet and sporadically post. Other than that, really no "spare" time at all. Typical weekday:
4:45am rise and shine
5:30am arrive at work
3:30pm leave work
4:00pm arrive home
4-8pm I take over watching our 15-month old, which usually involves copious amounts of reading, songs, chasing and tickling, as well as a walk and fixing her dinner and feeding it to her. I consider this my entertainment time because, though it's tiring, it's fun. :)
8-10pm I can usually try to get some stuff done like bills, garbage, dishes, etc. as long as it's not noisy enough to wake the daughter. If I do manage to sit during this time, I'll doze off within a couple minutes.

For weekends, I'm the main caregiver, so days are mostly spent with my daughter. If a home-improvement project is needed, I'll squeeze it in.

So work is generally the only time I can actually relax...a bit.

And like hansolo_506 said, I also feel guilty and selfish for any downtime I don't spend with the family. But it's worth it. :)
