Vintage C-3PO With Additional Part ;)
« on: February 26, 2003, 04:25 PM »
I was just flipping through the TV today and noticed on MTV that they were doing a little segment on "The" C-3PO with "extra part". Has anyone seen this segment or the actual card?

MTV showed a picture of it and indeed it is true.

Yep that card indeed is out there. It is rumored that it is more common than the corrected version. It is affectionately called the " Goldenrod card"

There are a few theories to its explanation such as a part fell off the costume at the time of the photo, there was also speculation that a disgruntled worker did it but that has kind of fallen out and ruled out. Also they think it may just be lighting and angles playing a part.
Either way it caused quit a stir when it was found out.

The other theory could be that George Lucas actually had a sense of humor once and wanted to give the fans something to ooh and ahh about.

I personally feel that it was an intentional thing. The lack of computer manipulation though makes that theory a litle gray. Topps used to hand paint caps on baseball players, so maybe it is a really nice paint job. Either way it is a classic boo-boo and fun to revisit every now and then.

I actually have a few of them in my big pile of Topps cards.  If you look at the actual card, it looks painted on.  Back in the day, very talented illustrators were uses to add  (like ball caps mentioned above) and correct parts of images all of the time.

I have two of the corrected card also.  Maybe I should a set one up on Ebay!
