I heard people (collectors and fans) saying it but I never heard any official word about it.

Yes, it is was filmed and is officially considered a cut scene.  It should be on the DVD.

I'm looking forward to seeing it.  :)

jedi search,
what's your source?  like above, i've never heard anything official on it.  I just figured that they couldn't sign mr. neeson....either b/c he was too busy or for other reasons.

Liam Neeson wouldn't have been needed for more than a day - signing him probably wouldn't have been any problem whatsoever.

I thought I read an interview with him a year or two ago where he said that he was filming a few things for EIII.

I saw that interview now that I think about it but I didn't hear anything more.

I thought I saw it in a USA Today article, but I can't seem to dig it up.

Was the scene in the shooting script?

It sure was:
-----------------------------------------------------------------

222 INT. POLIS MASSA-OBSERVATION DOME-NIGHT

On the isolated asteroid of Polis Massa, YODA meditates.

YODA:
Failed to stop the Sith Lord, I have. Still much to learn, there is ...

QUI -GON: (V.O.)
Patience. You will have time. I did not. When I became one with the Force I made a great discovery. With my training, you will be able to merge with the Force at will. Your physical self will fade away, but you will still retain your consciousness. You will become more powerful than any Sith.

YODA:
Eternal consciousness.

QUI-GON: (V.O.)
The ability to defy oblivion can be achieved, but only for oneself. It was accomplished by a Shaman of the Whills. It is a state acquired through compassion, not greed.

YODA:
. . . to become one with the Force, and influence still have . . . A power greater than all, it is.

QUI-GON: (V.O.)
You will learn to let go of everything. No attachment, no thought of self. No physical self.

YODA:
A great Jedi Master, you have become, Qui-Gon Jinn. Your apprentice I gratefully become.

YODA thinks about this for a minute, then BAIL ORGANA enters the room and breaks his meditation.

BAIL ORGANA:
Excuse me, Master Yoda. Obi-Wan Kenobi has made contact.

It seems to have come out of the film very, very late. As it exists, Bail walks in and breaks Yoda's meditation, which makes me wonder if they had completed more of the scene.

It hasn't been said if the scene was cut because of scheduling or non-participation issues with Liam Neeson, or if the scene didn't work visually. It reads well, though, I think.

It doesn't seem that Liam Neeson was uncooperative.  He took part in the Vanity Fair group photo and also attended one of the charity premiers that was held in New York.

After seeing the DVD's for both TPM and AOTC, I've seen that Lucas is a ruthless editor.  There are some good scenes that were cut from both movies.  The one that comes to mind in AOTC is when Padme brings Anakin to meet her parents.  It works very well from an acting and exposition standpoint, and it makes the development of the love story somewhat less herky-jerky.  But Lucas saw fit to cut it because it was a semi-long scene and he thought the movie was running long.

I would venture an educated guess (I work as an editor) that he felt ROTS was running long, too, and cut this scene as well.  He achieves the basic goal of this scene at a later point when Yoda and Obi-Wan are talking in the conference room on the Tantive.

awesome,
cant wait to see this on dvd.... thanks all around!

this brings up an interesting point...in a discussion that's goes round and round.
Are DVD cutscenes canon?  they're not in the film proper, but are on the dvd.

TND
btw, bring back the OT cut scenes!!

This would be interesting. I look forward to getting the DVD even more now. I agree that it does read well, and would be neat to have Qui-Gon lend his voice to the movie. And its not like it would be really long and stretch the film out.

As I understand the dialogue was never recorded, so I doubt it will be on the DVD. :'( I suppose it's possible though, and ideally it would be added back in like the extended Podrace in TPM.

It's too bad, because this is the major loose end I would have most liked to see resolved. It would be cool to see Yoda land on Dagobah as originally planned, but it’s not essential -- in fact, it helps to preserve a little of the surprise in ESB if you watch them chronologically.

I think the way the Qui-Gon “revelation” was handled was the only major miscalculation in the ending.

It's still in the novelization and the comic adaptation, so in my view it's still canon.
