Live 8 - Which one is Pink? Updated w/Spoilers
« on: June 18, 2005, 10:31 AM »
Well the lineup for the Live 8 is pretty disappointing other than Pink Floyd putting there differences aside for a good cause.  I am really shocked about this one.  Hopefully a final tour is in the near future.  Fingers crossed.  These guys are all in there 60's now.  But, the drummer (Wright) said he would love to still complete with the Stones, McCarthney, etc. As someone who has seen Waters and Floyd several times each, I can say that well both are good, Floyd is amazing in concert.

To say I was floored when I heard this "reunion" announced is a true understatement.  As much of a control freak as Waters was near the end of Floyd, it just wasn't Floyd without him.  I didn't get into the stuff either he or Gilmour/Mason/Wright did on their own post-TFC (I found TPACOH rather masturbatory and the two "Floyd" albums were like soft-rock easy listening for the most part), but all you need to do is put on DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, or (the greatest album of all time) The Wall and it erases everything after TFC from your memory.

While I don't think this will be a permanent reunion or even a harbinger of a tour with the 70's lineup, it will be nice to see/hear the four of them on stage together again, and it's for a wonderful cause, which makes it even better.  Is the show going to be broadcast this time around, or is MTV doing yet another "Real World/Road Rules Talentless Reality Whores" marathon that day instead?

I couldn't believe it when I heard it either.  Of all the bands and all the reunion shows, this is one I *never* would have thought to happen.  I have a feeling - and maybe this is way off base - that this one-time reunion might be a "test".  If they can work through their differences and get through this show without strangling each other, it stands to reason that they might be able to stick together for a reunion tour across the world.  One can only hope.  :)

JohnH, great to see my fellow prog head around these parts!

Yeah, I was pretty stunned when I heard the Pink Floyd reunion was happening. I was also suprised it wasn't breaking news on some of the radios stations I listen to. Wish I could see it.

Historically, I think England in genral produces better bands, so it's no wonder they have all the good bands. :P

Just read this on Pink Floyd.com:

It has been confirmed that Roger Waters will join Pink Floyd to perform at the Live8 concert in Hyde Park on 2nd July.

David Gilmour made the following statement:
“Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world. It’s crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations. Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if re-forming for this concert will help focus attention then it’s got to be worthwhile.”

Pretty cool to read something like that.  I saw Pink Floyd in Montreal in '94 and the show was fantastic.  It's certainly been a while since they performed together live, but it certainly has the potential to be a great show.  I'm just encouraged to read that musicians who are as well off as the members of Pink Floyd are coming together to do something like this for charity.  They certainly  don't need to perform for money anymore.
