They hang from trees, so a boot is out. These may be Carolina Wolf Spiders, the largest spiders in the nation.

Carry...a pelet gun.

Or a Machete...wait...Carolina wolf spiders...do you have a picture of them? I spend most of my summer in the Carolinas...never seen one before...

I not sure if I have any phobias expect for rollercoasters and public speaking, but this one I usually overcome once I get use to the people.  I use to be scared of flying, hights and snakes but not anymore.

Not especially.  Google is little help, so I'll have to resort to a real library.  What little I could find indicates that the terms Whip Scorpion and Whip Spider are interchangeable, though they are indeed spiders.

They are suggested to not be dangerous to humans (with the caveat that all spiders will bite to defend themselves) and prey on small animals and other insects.  Pretty typical stuff.

Mostly NOT found in North America north of Mexico, and pointedly I could not find a specific reference for the Appalachians.  Not to say you aren't seeing them, just that nobody is putting anything on the web from that region.  Possibly a species similar in appearance, but sufficiently different as to not be a whip spider.

Ok, I am located in Spartanburg SC which is located at the foot of the Appalachins.
The spiders are ground dwellers (or so it seems) they tend to hop from place to place and have very hard shells. Does that help?
sounds like a jumping spider

I know, but they don't look like that, I'll try to find a dead one and take a picture.

Gotta love the brown reclus.

One bite, and you start getting ulcer like wounds where the bite was. They can get bigger and bigger causing you to bleed, then killing you.

Not fun. THey're about the size of a quarter and have a violin shaped mark on their abdomin.

There are much, much worse pictures for a brown recluse.  On the bright side, with time, the wounds tend to heal over, but a fairly nasty scar.

You should be safe where you are Scott ;)

Yeah, one of the benifits of being up here...not too many creepy crawlies that make nasty scars....

I got bit by a spider once, but it didn't result in more that some minor bruises.
