No Maxim at Wal Mart!
« on: May 6, 2003, 11:53 AM »
Wal MArt decided to yank Maxim off of its shelves...booooooo!!!

http://money.cnn.com/2003/05/06/news/companies/walmart_mags/

"The Times said that the company's standards and the magazines' content have not changed, but the firm has been under pressure from Christian groups in the past for its sale of certain magazines."

Glad they decided what I get to look at!

I honestly can say that I haven't seen that magazine before, but then again I don't usually buy those types of magazines.  I've seen the FHM magazine before which is pretty nice, but I don't buy those magazines.

Don't they get to decide what they will and will not carry?

And don't you get to decide which stores will get your business, and which ones don't?

If a store doesn't carry something I want to buy, that's their right, just as its my right to go purchase that item somewhere else.

Just another reason not to shop there IMO, I made the mistake of buying one CD there a few years ago.  Never again will I make that mistake, plus that smell.

My Brother in Law is a Night Manager at a WalMart, he even thinks they kind of suck

Stuff and FHM also will not be sold there.

It doesn't bother me because I subscribe to all three, which is cheaper, I don't have to go to the store to get it, don't worry about missing an issue and actually receive it approximately a week before newstands do.  Good deal in my book  ;D

...yet I'm sure they'll continue to sell firearms right next to the toy aisle.

I find it rather odd that the CNN story failed to mention that Wal-Mart has also banned the sale of any new Star Wars figures as well, in addition to some of these sexier magazines.  What's up with that?  No respect for the collecting community, I tell ya'!

Not to mention they won't sell the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition...  Puhleeeeze...   ::)

Radical Christian fundamentalists have been up in arms about Star Wars since the revelation that Darth Vader was conceived immaculately. Took 'em long enough. That Stepin Fetchit smoke screen was pretty thick.  ::)

I was born and raised a Target Man, Target started in Minnesota and I will continue to spend all of my money (except when it comes to the occasional toy or hunting supply) there and now it looks like I will be getting my soft core Men's magazines there too (or the airport :-*)

Actually the gun sales are supposed to be stopping soon as well. Ever since a few stores got busted for not doing the background checks..  ATF doesn't take that kind of thing lightly.

But what about ammo? Guns don't kill people; bullets kill people.

It's just begging to be said guns don't kill people, people kill people.  I used to like to laugh at the US as the land where personal responsibility had no place.  Until Canada started doing the same.

I despise Walmart and basically only shop there prior to 8 AM.  No other Canadian retailer carries a decently priced (remember, we pay $12.99 plus 14% for Marvel Legends) toys with a marginal selection.  Prices at TRU suck and their selection is worse (this is a store that still has Homer Wave 1 on the pegs).

I buy toys there, and that's about it (well, maybe toilet paper).  I'll get my Maxim at 7-11.

I am not arguing about guns and ammo I was just stating that they are pulling the guns as well as magazines. But on the gun issue if Walmarts want to sell guns they need to do it properly if they want to continue it. The problem they had is that they were giving out guns with out the background checks being performed.

Agreed.  doing so without proper background checks and a suitable wait period is really not a particularly good or bright thing to do.

Of course, it can be taken to the opposite extreme as well.  Just ask Canada.

I am not all that familiar with Canada's regulations but I heard they are very strict.  What are the rules in owning a gun in Canada?
